Elle shot and killed a serial rapist in cold blood after she panicked on the job and allowed the unsub to go free. While there were no witnesses and it was deemed a 'clean' shoot (self-defense), she intentionally skipped an ordered Psych exam and Hotch gave her the option to quit or be fired. She quit.

Mandy Patinkin didn't show up for work for Season Three, so the writers wrote his character out. He had become too overwhelmed by the show's violence and the thought of people getting enjoyment out of it.

Matthew Gray Gubler severely dislocated his knee while having a dance off with his castmates from 500 Days of Summer. He's had several reconstructive surgeries to repair it, but he still remains in a brace and on crutches. This will not affect his role on the show, however Reid gets a gunshot wound in the first episode of season 5 that is used to explain the need for crutches

Shemar Moore broke his leg while out biking. He was hit by a car. The break is below his knee, so he will be in a walking cast for a while until it heals. It will have no affect on the show.

It was the unsub from the Season Four episode "Omnivore". It was Hotch's first BAU case and the unsub has always managed to escape police custody.
