Writing and producing partners Jared and Jerusha Hess, who are also husband and wife, have made a career out of championing the underdog. With their quirky sense of humor and their inspiration from the unlikeliest of places, the duo’s success with “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre” have carved them a niche in Hollywood that they are quite happy with.
At the press day for “Gentlemen Broncos”, the Hesses talked about working with special effects for the first time and assembling the cast for this film about an outsider with big dreams trying to achieve what he wants to do in life. Continued after the jump:
Question: Where did you get the title, Gentlemen Broncos?
Jared: The title of the film comes from my mom, who had this really weird parenting book when I was growing up. I have five younger brothers, and it was this book, called So You Want to Raise a Boy? »

We showed you the first theatrical one-sheet poster for The House Of The Devil at this original post here . Then we got a look at an alternate one-sheet right here and finally last week three more retro posters surfaced. (See those here ) Below you'll find the sixth and final poster for Ti West's latest. Personally, we love the marketing on this flick and this is definitely among one of the cooler promotional images concocted for the film. The House Of The Devil stars Jocelin Donahue (Jt Petty's The Burrowers ), indie ingénue Greta Gerwig ( Baghead ), Tom Noonan ( Snow Angels , Manhunter ), Mary Woronov ( Eating Raoul , The Devil's Rejects ), Aj Bowen ( The Signal ) and Dee Wallace (Rob Zombie's Halloween ). Uma Thurman will star in Max Winkler’s “Ceremony”. You may not know the name Max Winkler for right now, but something tells me that the guy will be huge sometime soon. He recently co-wrote “The Adventurer’s Handbook” with Jonah Hill and Matt Spicer and he also directed the pretty great web series “Clark and Michael” starring Clark Duke and Michael Cera a couple of years ago. The guy seems to have some talent and is now gearing up to shoot his debut feature, “Ceremony”, starring Thurman and Michael Angarano (”The Forbidden Kingdom”) this fall. You can get the full details when you click on the jump.
Variety reports that Michael Angarano is set to play “a young man who falls for an older woman (Thurman) who is about to get married.” Thats pretty much everything we know about the film for right now. We also know that Jason Reitman »

From writer-director Ti West comes The House Of The Devil, a satanic thriller set in the 1980s starring Jocelin Donahue (Jt Petty's forthcoming The Burrowers), indie ingénue Greta Gerwig (Hannah Takes The Stairs, Baghead), Tom Noonan (Snow Angels, Manhunter), Mary Woronov (Eating Raoul, The Devil's Rejects), Aj Bowen (The Signal) and Dee Wallace (E.T., Rob Zombie’s Halloween). New York horror director Ti West (The Roost, Trigger Man) makes it clear in his new project The House of the Devil, that he is a fan of the conventions of 1980s horror. House of the Devil hearkens back to the days of late 70s grindhouse cinema. David Gordon Green's career as a director has traveled through a variety of genres, starting in indie fare like All the Real Girls and Snow Angels before finding box office success with the stoner comedy Pineapple Express. Green's adding another genre to his resume with the upcoming horror thriller Freaks of the Heartland and a remake of Dario Argento's horror classic, Suspiria.
Green has been working on Suspiria for some time now, but, as Variety reports, shooting will finally begin in 2010. Green excitedly described the movie to ReelzChannel over a year ago:
It's great. You just have to see it. [I'm going for] the vivid technicolor achievement of The Red Shoes with the intensity and fear and anxiety of The Silence of the Lambs. Natalie Portman has been rumored for the lead, but while no confirmation has been made, Portman is currently shooting the comedy fantasy Your Highness with Green and »

“Whiteout” has a good premise and a likeable lead, but it goes rapidly downhill and is ultimately disappointing, thanks to confusing direction, an anti-climactic finale and an ‘Is that it?’ plot that makes less sense the more you think about it.
Directed by Dominic Sena (from a script credited to two different sets of brothers – never a good sign), Whiteout stars Kate Beckinsale as Us Marshal Carrie Stetko, who’s taken a post at a remote research station in Antarctica in order to escape a traumatic incident in her past. As her posting nears an end, she’s considering turning in her badge, but her departure plans are put on hold by the discovery of a mysterious body on the ice… read more [ViewLondon.co.uk]
It’s all fine, as far as it goes, but that’s not very far. Beckinsale is a trim and athletic actress, but she’s not a very compelling presence, »

It’s almost nothing more than a footnote, but a recent Variety article reminded everyone that the long-talked-about remake of Dario Argento’s classic Italian horror film Suspiria is not only still in the works, but it looks like it’s actually getting ready to happen. The article, about Luca Guadagnino’s Italian drama I Am Love, starring Tilda Swinton, says that the remake will be directed by David Gordon Green (Snow Angels, Pineapple Express) and will begin shooting next year. »

Tacked to the end of an unrelated story in the trades is first word that David Gordon Green's remake of Suspiria will begin shooting next year. This consciousness-altering bit of movie news was discovered by The Playlist. Curtsy. Green, who has managed to maintain his indie cred (Snow Angels) and establish box office pull and mainstream cachet (Pineapple Express), is currently in Ireland helming the Danny McBride stoner fantasia Your Highness for Universal. Last summer, I covered a rumor that Natalie Portman was cast as the lead in his Suspiria flick; as with today there was never a solid follow-up. However, Portman was later cast as the warrior princess/McBride's unlikely love interest in Your Highness and previously expressed interest in the role. In the time since that casting rumor, Portman also landed the lead in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, a thriller that shares surface-similarity with Dario Argento »

While Italian director Luca Guadagnino was telling those lovely people at Variety all about his plans to remake Auntie Mame with Tilda Swinton in the title role (read our story on it here), he also let slip some hot info about another remake that he’s producing: David Gordon Green’s remake of Suspiria, which will start shooting, apparently, in 2010.Yes, Dario Argento’s Suspiria. The nutso, bizarro, absolutely cream crackers horror classic, about a coven of witches terrorising a dance academy, will be remade by David Gordon Green, the indie king renowned for his carefully calibrated, emotionally layered and visually beautiful dramas, like George Washington, Snow Angels and Undertow. We’ve known that for a while, of course. The news was first announced in 2008, when it made about the same amount of sense as it does now. But not making any sense is an Argento trademark, so in a way Green – who, »

Chicago – Danny McBride (“Pineapple Express,” “Land of the Lost”) gave one of the best TV performances of the last several years as the over-the-top anti-hero of HBO’s hysterical “Eastbound & Down,” a sitcom about a raging a-hole sports star brought back to Earth and forced to work as a gym teacher in the small town he grew up in, now available on DVD.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 Kenny Powers is a giant, raging, alcoholic catfish in a small pond. He used to have it all - endorsements, trophies, a million-dollar contract. As his steroid-enhanced skills declined, the fact that Kenny Powers was also a total a-hole came to the surface and he was run out of professional sports (Mlb fans familiar with the true story of John Rocker will see some of that in this fictional take).
Eastbound and Down: The Complete First Season was released on DVD on June 30th, 2009.

Guillermo del Toro isn't the only one mentoring up-and-coming filmmakers - Jason Reitman is doing the same, too. Reitman will produce a comedy called Ceremony which will be the directorial debut of Max Winkler. Michael Angarano (Snow Angels) and Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland) are signing on to play the two friends that the film is about. When one of them (Eisenberg) falls for an older woman about to be married, he drags along his friend (Angarano) to a beach town in an effort to break up the wedding. Upon arriving, they quickly realize just how out of place they are among the British groom-to-be and his guests. Max is the son of actor Henry Winkler; he helped write the upcoming Jonah Hill comedy The Adventurer's Handbook and directed the web series Clark and Michael starring Michael Cera and Clark Duke. "Jason encouraged me to write this movie," Winkler told THR. "His »

Breaking Upwards is an effortlessly hip and funny new indie flick that easily ranks among the best films about relationships I've ever seen. For anyone who's ever thought that mainstream romantic comedies are a tad cliched or that the majority of their indie counterparts are quickly becoming limp and ironic flip sides of the same relationship fantasy coin, Breaking Upwards is exactly what you've been waiting for. It captures the modern relationship as it is; complex and not always easy, without painting people or their problems with a black and white brush. I would even go so far as to say it accomplishes for relationships in the new millennium what Annie Hall did in the 70s. Plus, it has great music in it.
