Opens: July 23rd 2010
Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams
Director: Jay Roach
Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.
Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".
The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can …

Like everyone, I think I have a certain amount of morbid curiosity about Will Smith's upcoming remake of The Karate Kid. Something about the project just feels wrong, and even though I want to be open-minded about it, the original film is just so iconic and irreplaceable that I don't know how to reconcile that. I suppose I have no reason to believe that this will be absolutely terrible... well, except for the fact that it's directed by the same guy who did The Pink Panther 2! I was also really annoyed by Jaden Smith in The Day the Earth Stood Still, but I haven't seen The Pursuit of Happyness which did get a lot of solid reviews. Then there's Jackie Chan, whose upcoming film The Spy Next Door looks like a new low in his career. These photos are nice enough I suppose, but... are they really training …

Beside practicing how to kick and punch, Will Smith's youngest son Jaden Smith gets an important lesson about discipline from his upcoming movie, "Kung Fu Kid". Jaden's co-star, Jackie Chan revealed to People, "His dad [Will Smith] told me that Jaden had changed. When he takes his shoes off, he doesn't throw them in the corner, but puts them away neatly!"
The "Rush Hour" actor added, "Jaden had a lot of respect for me as his teacher, even off the set. He is professional as many adult actors who have been in the business for years." Jackie continued praising Jaden, saying "He took the training very seriously. I was very impressed with him." The 55-year-old actor also revealed that the young actor of "The Pursuit of Happyness" has mastered front kicks and upper blocks through his training.
Jaden himself told People that Jackie didn't only help him with martial arts but …

Two weeks ago, I got to talk with Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter beyond Twilight and New Moon who had a lot of positive things to say about Summit and the way they do business. Apparently they make movies instead of talk about making them, give their talent a lot of room to grow, and offer freedoms that most other studios don't. Which probably explains why they are growing (even if most of that growth comes on the backs of a brooding vampire and his anti-feminist love interest). But Neil Miller will be glad to know that Chris Weitz, director of New Moon, has decided not to quit filmmaking and instead, according to Variety, will be making more movies after his next with Summit. In that next project, he'll be tackling the story of an immigrant worker trying to raise a son with Gardner. The money quote here: There are no werewolves or vampires, just …

There are two things that really trouble me about Extraordinary Measures. Don't get me wrong, I want to like the film, but when it feels the necessity to mention two other films in order to give you an idea of the genre in which it resides, it comes off desperate. Add the fact that the film claims to find "inspiration" from a true story, but is not the whole definition of the true story of which it is based off. That troubles me some.

It looks like >Will Smith is on the awards war path again, and is reportedly looking to reunite a third time with The Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino for an adaptation of the classic text Flowers for Algernon.
The book, which originated as a short story in the late '50s, has been made into a film called Charly in 1968, starring Cliff Robertson and Claire Bloom .
The story is a fairly sci-fi in a lot of ways - researchers have come up with a way to increase the intelligence of test subjects, with the titular Algernon, the mouse who first displays effects of their developments.
The story is however much more than a futuristic experiment - the dramatic change of the human test subject protagonist Charlie is such that he goes from being mentally disabled to intellectually unmatchable - but becomes aware that he is set to degenerate back …

There’s no doubt that Will Smith is one of Hollywood’s biggest power players: he’s one of Tinseltown’s highest paid actors, and if his name is put on a project, chances are pretty good that film is going to do well at the box office.
However, Smith is not one to rest on his laurels and go for easy roles just to bring in the cash. Instead, he’s ever pushing himself forward as an actor, working to expand his repertoire and make his name receive equal accolades for both his comedic and serious work.
His next role will certainly require him to take his acting to the next level.
Smith has signed on with Sony Pictures to produce and star in a modern-day adaptation of Daniel Keyes’s novel Flowers for Algernon. Now, I’m going to have to step aside from the movie part of …

It's not too hard to pick up on Will Smith's acting pattern. Usually he'll star in some big-budgeted affair, and then follow that up with a smaller, awards-type movie. Sometimes he'll wedge a comedy in between, though Smith tends to like two kinds of movies: really Giant blockbusters and really sappy awards contenders. This latest rumored Smith film falls into the latter sappy awards contenders' category, somewhere along the lines of The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds. In fact, that same director, Gabriele Muccino, may once again collaborate with Smith on Flowers for Algernon, based on the book by Daniel Keyes that has gone through several adaptations over the years – most notably with Ralph Nelson's Charly, which nabbed Cliff Robertson an Academy Award in...

While we reported earlier today that one Will Smith project appeared to be dead, it seems Smith is picking up another. Pajiba is reporting that Will Smith has signed on to star and produce an adaptation of the novel Flowers for Algernon.
The 1959 novel by Daniel Keyes had been adapted before, with the 1968 film Charly, which Cliff Robertson picked up an Academy Award for. This modern-day take on the story is being set up at Sony with Smith's production company Overbrook Entertainment to produce as well.
The story centers on a man of low intelligence who is the first to undergo a surgery that is said to raise intelligence. While the operation is successful, and his Iq raises from 68 to 185, the side effects include social setbacks where he feels ostracized from society.
It doesn't seem that a writer or director has been set for the project, but the site speculates that Smith collaborator Gabrielle Muccino, …
