With only a few exceptions (Bob Newhart, Frank Gorshin, ect.) the entire concept of a "one-man play" is historically an exercise in extreme egotism. Even as great as he was, one need only reference the monologues of Spalding Grey to understand this ideology. Whoopi, however, made a mark of true genius with this production. This may or may not be due to the performance spanning a full ninety minutes without a single word being spoken AS Whoopi Goldberg. Every second she spent on that stage was absorbed in the characters she channeled. Now mind you, there was a LOT of Whoopi in each one of the personas she donned, but she managed to separate herself from the project just enough to keep her floating a hair-breadth below the surface.

My one regret is that I saw it on HBO. A performance of that magnitude should have been experienced live.
