If this past weekend's box office was any indication horror fan's appetites might be changing. The type of films that fans have been gravitating towards over the last few years, the so-called "torture porn" genre, was well represented this past weekend with Saw VI but fans chose to see the The Blair Witch Project-style movie Paranormal Activity instead, which goes more for scares than gore. This could be a good sign for director Ti West whose new film The House of the Devil, which opens in theaters on October 30th, is a throwback to classic horror films like Halloween and When A Stranger Calls, and should give real horror fans a run for their money this Halloween season. We had a chance to speak with director Ti West and his leading actress, Jocelin Donahue, about their new film and the fate of Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever. To watch »

From its synth-heavy opening song and freeze-frame-filled beginning credits, Ti West’s The House of the Devil is a loving, respectful ode to the horror films of the 1970s and '80s. But don’t expect to get a warm, fuzzy feeling from all that affection; The House of the Devil is a gory, eerie film that doesn’t follow the templates set up by recent remakes of period favorites such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, and My Bloody Valentine. Instead of repackaging a familiar tale for contemporary audiences, director Ti West’s film revisits the era in a surprisingly fresh and authentic way.
Bearing a striking resemblance to Suspiria-era Jessica Harper, newcomer Jocelin Donahue plays Sam, a New England college student desperate for rent money so she can escape her roommate from hell. When she sees ads for a babysitter around campus, she thinks she may have found her salvation. »

It’s a wonder anyone can actually get a babysitter anymore as, if cinema has taught us anything, it’s that looking after someone else’s kids is hugely dangerous. Apparently a young woman in an unfamiliar house with badly-behaved sprogs has an allure that all local serial killers just can’t resist! Unsurprisingly, the same fate is duly doled out to teenager, Jill (Camille Belle, ex-squeeze of singing pin-up Joe Jonas) when she accepts a babysitting gig in 2006’s When a Stranger Calls and, similarly standard for the genre, the mysterious murderer terrorises his victim via the telephone. Still, at least it’s no tatty old phone, but the stylish Vtech I5871. Silver linings, eh? »

This isn't movie-related per se but it's obviously inspired by some scary films and it's almost Halloween time and I thought I'd share. Photographer Joshua Hoffine has posted a series of shots to his official site that are just plain freaky. He lists his inspiration as horror films like Black Christmas, Halloween and When A Stranger Calls. After you take a look through the pics below, you can see the full gallery here and check out some behind-the-scenes pics at his blog. »

Hello hello, the Coroner here with another installment of the Report, this time focusing on the direct to DVD and Blu-ray Amusement. The film is writer Jake Wade Wall's first foray into something original, he previously penned the remakes of The Hitcher and the atrocious When a Stranger Calls. Working with his own material, Wall does a decently good job, though with obvious flaws. Director John Simpson is similarly inexperienced, but manages to craft a pretty good movie with one section that is absolutely awesome. This little film came out a good while ago and I've been meaning to catch up with it for months now. The cover is a spooky clown and it stars a couple of women, I mean how bad can it be? The story is broken up into basically three sections. The first serves as an introduction to our killer as he does what he does best - look kind of nerdy »

2009. Not a bad year for Danielle Harris ( video interview ) who spent an early part of it being stalked by Michael Myers again for Halloween II , then wandered through the vampire-riddled Stake Land . Next up, she's taking on zombies in Night of the Living Dead: Origins . The actress revealed what role she's playing via her Twitter account this afternoon: "All you're good luck wishes worked! Guess who's gonna be Barbara?!" Origins is a 3-D, CGI spin-off of the George A. Romero classic. Director Zebediah de Soto is delving in the backgrounds of the characters we know so well. When a Stranger Calls ' Simon West and Jib Polhemus are producing. For more on De Soto's approach click here ! »

Remember that pivotal moment in the horror film When A Stranger Calls, when the babysitter gets the news that "The call is coming from inside the house?" It's a jaw-dropping revelation. If the new app Robo.to has anything to do with it, Jill would probably have a little too much information about who was calling.Available later this year for iPhone and Android phones, Robo.to skips the humdrum caller ID screen and gives the party receiving the call a slew of information--videos, photos, Twitter and LinkedIn profile updates, and current location. Don't forget to actually answer the call.New features tend to be about new revenue streams. With Robo.to, details about your friends and family, and who you call and text most, are stored in a contacts folder. Think about what would happen if an app merged that info with the data available on Facebook and Twitter--that »

Three years ago, we were subjected to an atrocity that gave us a new spin and a white Ben in Jeff Broadstreet's Night of the Living Dead 3-D. With public domain rights, any Joe Shmoe can make his or her version of the classic 1968 George Romero film. That last statement is once again proven with the news of another 3-D version of the undead film. Directed by the unknown Zebediah de Soto and written by When A Stranger Calls remake director Simon West, this remake will be titled Night of the Living Dead: Origins. Sounds like a prequel doesn't it? Well, it kind of is and here is what I mean: From The Hollywood Reporter website: "On the story front, De Soto, who wrote the script with David R. Schwartz, wants to update the tale partially by bringing out the characters’ backstories and make what he called 'an American-style anime. »

Didn't we just get treated to a 3D remake of Night of the Living Dead a few years ago, and didn't it pretty much suck to high heaven? Here we are once again, and for the record George A. Romero has nothing to do with this production either. This time it's being produced by Simon West, director of the abysmal remake When a Stranger Calls and the equally atrocious Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
Fortunately, Simon West will not be in the director's chair. Directing duties fall in the lap of Zebediah de Soto, who has also co-written the script. Zeb directed the short film "War Dogs" and was the man behind all of the promos you've seen online for such entities as us, Bloody-Disgusting, Screamfest La, and the site that shall not be named.
The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog broke the news of the coming of Night of the Living Dead: Origins. »

Tyler Perry's Madea swung her weight at the box office again, handily topping a modest weekend at the box office with her latest appearance in Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself. The weekend also saw a passable start for the animated 9 and the failures of two thrillers, Sorority Row and Whiteout. Overall business was off seven percent from the same weekend last year, when Burn After Reading and Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys opened. I Can Do Bad All By Myself yanked an estimated $24 million out of approximately 3,200 screens at 2,255 sites. It was the third highest-grossing debut for a Tyler Perry movie, though slightly above average in terms of attendance, and a new high for one of his Fall releases, topping The Family That Preys ($17.4 million) and Why Did I Get Married? ($21.4 million). Though not named in the title like Perry's biggest hits, Madea was »

Jill Johnson (Carol Kane) meets with the Mandrakis family to see that their children are looked after while they head out for dinner and a movie. Piece of cake, considering the children are already sound asleep upstairs. But Jill’s seemingly mundane evening of studies and telephone banter takes a turn for the worse, when Jill begins receiving a string of eerie telephone calls from some anonymous caller in which she is unable to identify. Have you checked the children? The caller asks repeatedly. Hesitant to check on the children, anchored by fear - Jill telephones the police, who in turn arrange to have any future calls traced. As Jill continues to catch the creepy incoming calls, she begins hearing strange sounds from within the house. Before Ms. Johnson has the chance to learn the fate of the children upstairs, police phone her to inform her that those mysterious calls she’s been receiving, »

Danielle Harris stars in the new Halloween sequel by Rob Zombie. It’s a crap movie, but Danielle Harris, who was brought back into the franchise last year by Zombie for his remake, actually starred in the original Halloween 4 and 5, in which she played Jamie Lloyd, the target of Michael Myer’s wrath. In Zombie’s Halloween II, she reprises her role as Annie Brackett, the ill-fated friend of Lori Strode who bravely takes on nudity in an un-Jamie Lloyd way.
But Danielle Harris is much more than funny anecdotes about how much Donald Pleasance scared her when she was a kid because he was always drunk on the set and wearing a gross fake scar; she’s a clever woman with filmmaking aspirations of her own. She tells Pretty/Scary about how the Halloween franchise is now a part of her life...
Despite what you may think, Harris »

Part 1 of Fangoria's Exclusive look at the making of A Nightmare On Elm Street...
Security is very much in place on the set of the new Nightmare On Elm Street, as the filmmakers attempt to keep the 2010 Freddy Krueger under wraps. Literally. When Jackie Earle Haley arrives on the set of the film (set for New Line release April 30), it is in a darkened van that pulls up outside of Powell’s Book Store in Chicago. Billowing black robes and umbrellas suddenly appear, wielded by production assistants, shielding the actor from any unauthorized eyeballs as he makes his way through the midday sunlight from the van into the bookstore.
Inside, safe from curious onlookers, the wraps come off. Haley is in full makeup and costume. Freddy lives again.
Much in the spirit of the recent reduxes of Halloween, Friday The 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this Nightmare On Elm »

The final weekend of Fantasia delivered in spades. The screenings divided audiences, prompted walkouts, and had viewers rolling in the aisles and salting their popcorn with tears of joy celebrating the rebirth of Coffin Joe.
On Friday just about everyone was split in their opinions of The Children and Deadgirl, which led to a lot of hotheaded arguing over drinks. Some folks thought The Children" target="_blank">The Children (review here) was the best horror movie of the year; whereas others found it boring, unbelievable, and confusing. Paul and I fell into the latter camp.
Deadgirl was a lot less contentious, as just about everyone found it to be an unintelligent, misogynistic, and heavily watered down film. My assessment is slightly more forgiving, as I thought the premise was intriguing, even if it was mostly wasted. It’s a shame the directors decided to spend so much time on the more commercial, »

Fox’s newest show, Human Target, is about a body guard named Christopher Chance who privately contracts out to clients to guard them from dangerous threats. He’s hired when normal measures are no longer effective.
Human Target first showed up in comic books in 1972 under the Action Comics title and later became its own comic book and graphic novel. The original version of Human Target had him impersonate his clients.
Now Fox has taken the franchise a step further and has ordered some episodes for the 2009 / 2010 season.
In Fox’s version, Chance assumes nondescript positions that keeps him close to his client.
Check it out:
Human Target will be executive produced by Jon Steinberg (Jericho), McG (Terminator 5, Supernatural, Chuck), & Brad Kern (Charmed, Lois & Clark). Co-executive producer Peter Johnson (Chuck, Supernatural), directed (and executive producer) Simon West (Con Air, When A Stranger Calls, Black Hawk Down)

Variety reports that Connie Britton has joined the cast of New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes’ remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street. She’ll join a cast headed by Jackie Earle Haley as the new Freddy Krueger.
Britton recently logged genre time in Larry Fessenden’s The Last Winter and is probably best known for her roles in the film and TV versions of Friday Night Lights. Also in the Elm Street ensemble are The Haunting In Connecticut’s Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, From Within’s Thomas Dekker, Twilight’s Kellan Lutz and Katie Cassidy, who’s becoming a slasher-redux veteran, having previously appeared in When A Stranger Calls and Black Christmas; the movie is currently slated to open April 16, 2010. »

We're not sure this role is going to provide much of a stretch, but Jason Statham has just signed on to play a hitman in The Mechanic, a remake of the Charles Bronson film of 1972. Simon West (Con Air, When A Stranger Calls) is directing. The story focuses on a highly-skilled but emotionally detached hitman - guess who - who is planning to retire when a young man asks to be trained up in the profession. Only problem is that this new apprentice is the son of one of the Mechanic's victims, and may have more in mind than just a City and Guilds apprenticeship. The film starts shooting this summer in Shreveport, Louisiana, based on a script by Steve Salerno. »
