Monster Movies

11 December 2009 4:07 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Glenn here from Stale Popcorn here to discuss one of my favourite films from 2003, Patty Jenkins' Monster. Earlier this year when Courtney Hunt's Frozen River was released here in Australia I wrote in my review that It's a shame that Courtney Hunt's Frozen River is so good. It's unfortunate because now I will most likely be incredibly disappointed when this debut director falls between the cracks of the lead performance she helped create. I then went on to cite Boys Don't Cry's Kimberley Pierce (9 years between films) and Monster as examples.

Patty Jenkins has yet to make a second film after her Monster debut and there has never even been any word on her wanting to make another film. That is such a shame since she brought such fascinating sense of place to the Aileen Wuornos film and her twists on the idea of "American Gothic

Storch came from The Agency Group, where he booked worldwide tours for clients. The hiring follows Icm's 2008 acquisition of Marsha Vlasic’s M.V.O. My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done

24 November 2009 1:26 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

What happens when two of cinema’s greatest (and oddest) filmmakers collaborate on a project? The answer is: My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. A new feature film directed by Werner Herzog and produced by David Lynch.

Starring Willem Dafoe, Michael Shannon, Chloe Sevigny and Brad Dourif, the film is centred around the strange (what else?), true life tale of a disturbed man obsessed with a Sophocles play, who murders his mother with a sword.

Werner Herzog, since his award-winning documentary Grizzly Man, has undergone a career renaissance. Along with Rescue Dawn, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and his documentary features, he doesn’t seem to stop! As a filmmaker, he’s often displayed a penchant for the eccentric and weird. David Lynch, on the other hand, is downright weird through-and-through. Things have been quiet for Lynch since Inland Empire – an infuriating and brilliant film measure-for-measure. …

David Lynch's Next Project? Documentary on Transcendental Meditation

19 November 2009 2:05 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

If you're a David Lynch fan, you probably know he's been spending the bulk of his time on transcendental meditation lately. He's even started his own foundation, which seeks not only to promote awareness about meditation, but also to bring it to schools nationwide.

With so much time devoted to the practice, Lynch has not made a feature since Inland Empire (2006). But in a recent interview with Vulture, the 63-year-old director said that his next project will be a documentary about the founder of transcendental meditation, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The Maharishi spent more than 50 years teaching and advocating the meditation technique to people worldwide, even attracting the attention of The Beatles in the late '60s. He lived into his 90s and died of natural causes in February 2008.

While it sounds like a fascinating project, it certainly doesn't sound like the "typical" Lynch fare, and the man himself stated as such in the interview. …

David Lynch to Do a Documentary on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

18 November 2009 5:33 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In a story from Vulture, they recently caught up with revered independent filmmaker David Lynch (Inland Empire). He discussed his next project which is going to be a documentary partly shot in India centered around Transcendental Meditation founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He said:

I'm going to make a film on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It won't be a so-called David Lynch film, really; it will be about Maharishi and the knowledge he brought out. It'll hold a lot of abstractions. We're on our way to India in December to start the India part of it.

As Lynch is known for experimenting with many different cinematic forms he also discussed the films structure:

It'll have to go in the documentary department, I think. I don't think it'll be a talking heads kind of thing, but we're going to do a lot of interviews with people. We'll interview - I hope - in India, …

Lynch’s new film: an “abstract” documentary

18 November 2009 4:02 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

For the coffee drinking, cherry pie eating, chicken dancing fans of David Lynch everywhere, the announcement of his return to film making should be a glorious one. Yet, as always with the eccentric maestro, there is something of a catch.

The last decade has been a quiet one in the way of film work for David Lynch. Not that he hasn’t kept busy – aside from maintaining his web-site, working on shorts such as Rabbits and the animated Dumbland, adverts for Gucci, music videos for Moby, an exhibition in Paris and a transcendental book called “Catching The Big Fish”, Lynch has kept his fans updated with weather reports and his embracing of Twitter micro-blogging. But, in the way of films, the big-haired auteur’s output has been scant. After re-tooling Mullholland Drive from what was to be a pilot episode for a TV series, the creator of Twin Peaks has …

David Lynch’s Next Film is a Documentary on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Updates on Snootworld.

18 November 2009 11:40 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Everyone I know is compiling a list of the best films of the aughts, and 2001's Mulholland Drive seems to be a lock on most (and if it's not, 2006's Inland Empire is the more pretentious substitute). But as the decade closes out, I do wish we had seen more "Lynchian" films from David Lynch, who seems occupied with experimental video, his son's ambitious documentary projects, the advent of Twitter, and exposing as many people/fans to Transcendental Meditation as possible. So, if it's a tad disappointing that the chain smoking auteur's next film won't hinge on creepy dream logic, it doesn't qualify as a surprise that it will instead be a doc on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The founder and guru of Tm died early last year, and true to form, Lynch adds that his doc on the man will "hold a lot of abstractions." Lynch tells Vulture that he's …

David Lynch's Next Film Is A Documentary On Transcendental Meditation

18 November 2009 7:21 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

A few years ago I went to see David Lynch give a speech at a nearby college. I knew he was there to talk about transcendental meditation, the practice that has pretty much consumed his work in the last decade and has kept us from getting another masterpiece after Mulholland Drive (sorry, Inland Empire). We were all hoping that he'd manage to slip in some discussion of the Log Lady or snakeskin jackets during the speech, but Lynch was pretty determined to stick to the meditation status quo. Disappointed doesn't really begin to describe it. I feel exactly the same way reading Vulture's interview with Lynch, in which he says his next film will be a documentary about Maharishi Mahesh yogi, which he says straight up "won't be a so-called David Lynch film." Then again, he promises "It.ll hold a lot of abstractions," which sounds about as David Lynch

Directors of the Decade: David Lynch

29 October 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Robert here, continuing my series of the directors that shaped the past 10 years (Enjoy the first two installments on Scorsese and Bahrani) . The most important directors of the past 10 years aren’t always the most prolific, though this series will require a director to have released at least 2 films. Not to mention some of those featured here may be love ‘em or hate ‘em choices. Something tells me, this weeks entry is one such man: David Lynch.

Number of Films: Two.

Modern Masterpieces: I’m going to go ahead and suggest that both Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire qualify.

Total Disasters: Though you may feel that both Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire fall here.

Better than you remember: And if you do think that, may I suggest you place them here.

Awards: Nominated for a Best Director Oscar for Mulholland Drive. Won Best Director in Cannes for that same film. …

Laura Dern Joins Little Fockers

18 October 2009 11:56 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Laura Dern will be joining Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Owen Wilson and Jessica Alba in Little Fockers; part three of the series that began with Meet the Parents in 2000 and continued With Meet the Fockers in 2004.Dern will pay the headmistress of the elementary school that Gaylord and Pam's children attend, and that Stiller will no doubt burn down, or flood, or bring disaster to in some hilarious unforseen fashion. Sounds like a fun franchise outing for the actress, who has preferred to stay below the studio radar lately, with appearances in low-key fare like Tenderness and Year of the Dog. She won a Golden Globe for her performance in the TV movie Recount, but missed out on an oscar nomination for Inland Empire, despite David Lynch's high-profile campaign. No news yet on whether Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman are returning for Little Fockers. …

Greatest Scream Queens

1 September 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People. Needless to say, it was a hit at the box office and Kinski deservingly received a Saturn Award for Best Actress. Caroline Munro Films: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) [5] Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) [6] Dracula A.D. 1972 [7] Maniac (1980) [8] Faceless (1987) [9] Demons 6 (1989) [10] Caroline Munro seduced audiences in her Hammer roles in films like Dracula A.D. 1972, but for gore hounds, …
