Director Ken Loach To Receive The Lifetime Achievement Award At The Efa

15 September 2009 4:51 AM, PDT | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

TV and film director Ken Loach will be honored at the 22nd European Film Awards with a lifetime achievement award for his outstanding and dedicated body of work.

Loach's first film was in 1967 when he made "Poor Cow." His breakthrough came in 1970 with "Kes" and "Family Life" in 1971. He has then established himself as a politically and socially committed filmmaker with "Riff Raff," "Land and Freedom," and "Sweet Sixteen."

In 1966, he made the influential documentary drama "Cathy Come Home," about working class people affected by homelessness and unemployment.

He won the Palme d"Or award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 for "The Wind That Shakes the Barley," a film about the Irish War of Independence and the following Irish Civil War in the '20s.

In Part 2 of tMF's 50 Essential Foreign Films, we're listing down our UK Top 10. This means the list is not limited to English films and include movies which essentially are either about the whole United Kingdom or predominantly so or about someone from London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast or from any other places in the UK.

There is one particular issue that The Guardian pointed out, which at some point, was an important consideration in our own list of 10. A few days ago, The Observer published the Best British Films poll, to which it was pointed out:

Cannes 2009 Day Six Reviews: Football, Fascism, Death and Porn

20 May 2009 6:48 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Another fun day of filmgoing at Cannes, as you can tell by the subjects tackled. (Actually, one of them is a genuine crowd-pleaser.) It remains a quiet fest in the market and late at night but definitely exciting and vibrant when it comes to the new films screening in and out of Competition. Thank you, Von Trier, for giving everyone something to argue about. Looking For Eric *** (out of four) -- You rarely see a heartfelt comic film in Competition and you certainly don't expect it from the harsh realist school of Ken Loach (whose Palme d'Or winner "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" was one of my favorites of the year). I don't know famed football/soccer player Eric Cantona from Adam. (Pele, I know. Ronaldo, I know. Cantona? An Italian best known for his stellar work with Manchester United?... »

Cannes 2009: Looking For Eric

18 May 2009 4:14 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Feelgood factor. Magic realism. A real-life sporting superstar playing himself… Ken Loach’s latest, Looking For Eric, is worlds apart from his last Cannes competitor, Irish history lesson The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2006). That film bagged the coveted Palme d’or – a feat the Brit-director is unlikely to repeat with this relatively lighter (in every sense) yarn. On the other hand, it’s likely to be one of the biggest audience-pullers of Loach’s career. It’s a tale of two Erics, the...

Quentin Tarantino's new movie Inglourious Basterds and Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock are among the nominees for the Cannes Film Festival's prestigious Palme d'Or award.

Tarantino's World War II drama, starring Brad Pitt, tells the story of a group of Jewish-American soldiers fighting in Nazi-occupied France.

It will go up against 19 other pictures at the French festival, which runs between 13 and 24 May.

Other movies to reach the coveted shortlist include Lee's Taking Woodstock, set during the legendary 1969 U.S. music festival, and Ken Loach's Looking for Eric, starring retired French soccer star Eric Cantona.

Tarantino won the Palme d'Or in 1994 with his second film Pulp Fiction, while Loach took the prize in 2006 with historical Irish drama The Wind That Shook the Barley. »
