I don't agree with the sad 4 out of 10 stars this movie is racking up here at IMDb so I would like to put my two cents down to tell everyone why.
When it comes to summer movies, everything is computer generated, loud and most of the time sad (snakes on a plane... you serious?), with Step Up none of those adjectives come to mind. It's not going to win any Oscars but it's going to entertain without over staying it's welcome. At a cool hour and a half it's a nice escape as apposed to some other summer blockbusters that don't deliver as well as this little film and run twice as long.
I come from a dance background, and I'm very critical when it comes to dance in films. With Step Up I enjoyed every little routine I saw. The juxtaposition in the beginning going back and forth between the street and the ballet studio sets a great pace for the movie right off, and the big dance number at the end (it wouldn't be a dancing movie without one) delivers.
The main actors are paired well and handled the dancing and choreography with flair. Channing Tatum's interactions with his fellow foster siblings is endearing without being corny and his chemistry with Jenna Dewan is refreshingly believable. Jenna is an accomplished dancer and I would really love to raid her wardrobe trailer. (One of my favorite things in this film were the very quirky outfits Jenna and her friends wore.) This movie has a little something for almost everyone. If you're a dancer, you'll definitely enjoy it... If you're a lover of hip-hop you'll want to run out and buy the soundtrack as soon as you leave the theater... If you were a product an arts high school you'll probably enjoy this film as well, it centers around one in urban Maryland... And if you would just like some summer fun you'll get it, without feeling your IQ shrinking.
Bottom line: I enjoyed it, don't take it too seriously and you will as well.
