Universal finds their guy! Carl Rinsch to direct their '47 Ronin' film.

18 November 2009 8:05 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Noteworthy in the sense that we've only just been talking about a new chambara film being prepared in Japan.

Perhaps we didn't care or thought the idea was just too silly that it couldn't be true but almost a year ago it was announced that Keanu Reeves would be starring in an American take on the story of the 47 Ronin. [Insert picking ourselves up from the floor]

No sooner had we caught our breath then it was announced that the screenplay would be written by Chris Morgan. He wrote such sprawling epics as Cellular, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Wanted and Fast & Furious. But he silenced any doubters in an interview with cultural hot pot MTV, "It's this great, 'Gladiator'-esque, '300'-like big action movie with samurai and ninja," Morgan said. Although some "47 Ronin" enthusiasts have their doubts about the "Fast and Furious" scribe tackling the beloved Japanese tale, Morgan points to his long history »

Summit Hires Team To Reboot ‘Highlander’

23 September 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

We here at The Flickcast are all but shocked when we hear about this thing or that getting rebooted or remade. Sadly, we were a little bit surprised when news came that 1986’s Highlander is getting a fancy Hollywood facelift, and even has a director and producer attached.

Distributor Summit Entertainment is going forward with the reboot of the film, hiring the team of Justin Lin to direct and Neal H. Moritz to produce. The team was also behind Fast and Furious, which was one of the bigger film of the year, and the highest grossing title of the year for Universal Pictures.

Summit has had great success so far with the adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series (with New Moon hitting theaters this November). According to Variety this may be the birth of another franchise for the company:

Fast & Furious Director Challenges Highlander

22 September 2009 10:23 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Justin Lin, director behind Fast & Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and Annapolis will be teaming with producer Neal H. Moritz to reboot the fantasy adventure film series Highlander for Summit Entertainment.

People forget after 20 years’ worth of lesser sequels and spinoffs that the original Highlander was a pretty high profile film starring Christopher Lambert (at the man’s peak) alongside Sean Connery. Original producer Peter Davis is returning to hand the torch over to the new filmmakers.

Highlander, like the original film, will focus on a race of immortals that wage war upon each other through time. It’s a concept that’s broad enough to be attacked from a fresh angle by a talented writer, and luckily we’ve got two pretty decent ones on our hands: Iron Man and Punisher: War Zone writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.

There Can Only Be One Highlander but Director Justin Lin Wants a Remake

22 September 2009 2:23 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Highlander” is such a delightfully silly movie.  Christopher Lambert’s Swiss accent, original songs by Queen, Clancy Brown decapitating folks as he makes his way through the story, and Sean Connery all make for a movie that is cheesy 80s action but through a camp-fantasy filter.  You can’t really call it a “franchise” because that implies that anything after the first film was successful.  The biggest success following “Highlander” was that the title of the sequel had the sub-title, “The Quickening”.

And now “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin wants to remake it.  Hit the jump to read the full press release and why this remake could work but not because of Justin Lin.

Sure, the “Fast/Furious” movies are dumb but next to “Highlander” they look like an in-depth documentary about the world of modified cars and the culture of street racing.  Screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote »

Wow, this came out of nowhere, right? Summit Entertainment announced today that they're bringing the Fast & Furious team over to their boat to reboot and re-imagine Highlander . Neal H. Moritz is producing and Justin Lin, who also directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, is set to direct. The good news is that Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who together wrote Iron Man and Punisher: War Zone, are attached to write the screenplay. Peter Davis, long time producer of Highlander films, will also produce. Summit's film will expand on the original Highlander's core mythology of immortals battling amongst us. Exciting! If you didn't get it, that was a joke. "We are privileged to have this amazing opportunity to reinvent one of the great franchises," said Patrick Wachsberger, co-chairman of Summit Entertainment. Justin Lin and Neal Moritz Team for Highlander Remake

22 September 2009 7:55 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Summit Entertainment announced today that it has tapped the filmmaking team behind this spring's hit film Fast & Furious - director Justin Lin and producer Neal H. Moritz - to direct and produce respectively the studio's re-imagination of the cult film Highlander. Summit's Highlander is being written by Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Peter Davis, long time producer of Highlander, will also produce the film. Summit acquired the rights to remake the cult classic from Davis - Panzer Productions, Inc. in May of 2008.

Summit's film will expand on the original Highlander's core mythology of immortals battling amongst us, hunting each other through the ages by tapping its newly minted creative team to take its re-imagination to new heights. Plans call for the re-imagination to spur a new franchise for the studio.

New 'Highlander' Movie on the Way

21 September 2009 9:20 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

There can be only one; it’s been the tagline throughout the 'Highlander' movie and television franchise. Unfortunately, for much of that time, the "one" could have referred to the total number of Highlander films that were actually good.

Now it appears Summit Entertainment has an opportunity to change that. According to Variety, director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz have been hired to revitalize the once-popular science-fiction/fantasy property, which concerns sword-wielding immortals battling one another down through the ages.

The original 1986 Highlander, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown, and was directed by Russell Mulcahy, was a bigger success in Europe than in the United States. Meanwhile, despite retaining the same director and stars as the first film, the futuristic 1991 sequel Highlander 2: The Quickening is considered among the most incomprehensible movies ever made.

Universal Pictures, which has been having a disastrous year at the box office, got some good news from its home video unit on Wednesday. Its Fast & Furious titled roared to the top of the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert DVD and Blu-ray sales charts and topped Home Media magazine's rental chart for last week. Many people who bought the latest movie also picked up the original, too. It returned to the sales chart at No. 10. So did the 2006 release, The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift (at No.12) and 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious (at No. 14). »

Usually, when studios “reboot” a franchise, they try to produce a movie that’s as far removed from the stale past model as possible, with a new cast and a reconsidered style and tone. But for Fast & Furious (Universal), the opposite happened: Vin Diesel and Paul Walker teamed up again, and Justin Lin, director of The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, returned behind the camera. The only real change is the streamlined title: Lose the definite articles, add the ampersand… The concept of an underground operation that specializes in programming “dolls” (humans that are basically blank slates) with traits ... »

Justin Lin Hits the Redline with Fast & Furious

28 July 2009 2:51 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The director of this new installment talks about the new DVD, working with the original cast and a possible fifth film

Justin Lin is a director who has proven he can succeed both in and out of the studio system. His breakthrough film, Better Luck Tomorrow, lead to such studio films as Annapolis and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, but the director also found time between those projects to make the indie sensation Finishing the Game. The director is back with the franchise that brings all the hot cars and hot women to the silver screen, with the new film Fast & Furious, which hits the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray on July 28. I had the chance to speak with Lin today over the phone, and here's what he had to say.

Both Vin Diesel and Paul Walker will return for the fifth film, which will take place in Brazil. Lin: 'Fast & Furious' about coming home

Weekend Report: 'Fast and Furious' Power Slides to Record Debut

Revving way past its predecessors' redlines, Fast and Furious generated $71 million over the weekend, summarily dusting Anger Management's $42.2 million to notch the biggest April debut ever. Driven by the action sequel, the weekend as a whole was the busiest on record for April, grossing over $155 million and surging 62 percent ahead of the same weekend last year. Packing more than 5,200 screens at 3,461 theaters under its hood, Fast and Furious outdrew the final tally of the franchise's previous movie, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, in three days flat, and it was much quicker off the line than the first two pictures. Weekend Box Office: Wtf 'Fast & Furious'?!?

6 April 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The first weekend take for Fast & Furious, a staggering $72 million, beats the entire domestic gross of its series predecessor, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift by $10 million dollars? It is also far and away the year's best opening, though that will likely change come May.

How did this happen? Bringing back Vin Diesel and Paul Walker as part of the "series reboot" helped. The hip new advertising campaign that focused heavily on the car chase action probably succeeded in making the franchise seem less "cheesy" this time around. (The Tokyo Drift subtitle, which turned out to have great traction (Zing!) as a running joke, didn't help the beleaguered third film.) Having seen the movie, that seems a little silly, since it's probably even more hilarious than its predecessors (and never has the description of Vin Diesel as an "angry potato" been more apt). But here we are, and a »

Fast & Furious Wins Box Office Race With Huge Opening Haul

Fast & Furious raced to the top of the U.S. box office chart scooping a staggering $72.5 million (£50 million) in its opening weekend (03-05Apr09).

After skipping sequels 2 Fast 2 Furious and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Vin Diesel returned to the franchise for the fourth installment, and proved to be the magic ingredient.

The huge opening weekend haul is the most ever for a movie released in April and the biggest so far in 2009.

Monsters vs Aliens took second place with $33.5 million (£22.6 million), followed by The Haunting in Connecticut with $9.6 million (£6.5 million)

A Fast and Furious $72.5 Mil Weekend

5 April 2009 9:31 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

It must have been the thes that were the problem. Shorn of its franchise's titular articles, Fast and Furious blew away its predecessors and the box-office weekend competition with an estimated $72.5 million Friday-Sunday debut. The performance was the year's best opening by a mile. It was the car series' biggest by an even longer mile.  Drilling down into the numbers: • The Furious franchise's previous best was the $50.5 million taken in by 2003's similarly the-lacking 2 Fast 2 Furious. • With the articles, but without either Vin Diesel or Paul Walker, 2006's The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift earned less in its entire run ($62.5 million) than... »

'Fast & Furious' wins Friday b.o. race with $30M

4 April 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

"Fast & Furious" raced to the top of the North American box office Friday with a whopping $30.1 million in ticket sales.

The fourth installment in the popular series easily beat the $9.7 million opening day gross of its predecessor, "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift." In the Justin Lin-directed film, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker team up to infiltrate the operations of a drug lord.

Things didn't go so well for "Adventureland," this week's second wide release. The Greg Mottola-directed comedy starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart finished in sixth place and only pulled in $2.1 million. The movie follows a recent college grad who takes on a crappy job at an amusement park.

At No. 2, DreamWorks Animation's "Monsters vs. Aliens" took home another $8.9 million, lifting its total gross to $81.9 million. Following in thid place with $3.6 million was "The Haunting in Connecticut," which brought its domestic total to $31.3 million.
