Inglourious Basterds I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition, which you can read right here, but if you're looking for the short version... Buy this one right now. My recommendation is Blu-ray. The Mel Brooks Collection [Blu-ray] I almost made this the first previewed release, but at $92.99 I know it isn't exactly something people are going to be rushing out to buy as it takes a little more thought before handing over that kind of money. However, considering the set comes with nine of Mel Brooks's films on beautiful Blu-ray transfers that means you are getting each at just over $10. That's a pretty good deal.

The titles included in the set are Twelve Chairs, Silent Movie, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History of the World - Part I, To Be or Not To Be, Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. …

Judi Dench: 'I'm no national treasure'

11 December 2009 8:23 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Dame Judi Dench has rejected the suggestion that she is a diva. The Notes on a Scandal star also told The Times that she was not fond of being called a national treasure. Dench said: "National treasure? I hate that. Too dusty, too in a cupboard, too behind glass, too staid. "I don't want to be thought of as recognisable. I always want to do the most different thing I can think of next. "I don't want to be known for one thing, or as having done huge amounts of Shakespeare and the classics. I hate speaking as myself." Cracks – Alex’s Review

1 December 2009 4:13 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

“What’s the most important thing in life?”

Don’t answer yet! Think about it very carefully first.

After all, it’s a pretty big question. In fact, do they come any bigger? Probably not and yet for a group of young girls growing up in 1934. The answer might be quite simple. A husband, security, money, a nice house, kids. All the basic things a young woman was told to aspire to back in the 30s.

However, for a group of girls being taught at a school by Miss G these are the very things to avoid.

The glamorous young teacher fills her diving lessons with instructions on rebellion, the wonders of travel, of becoming strong and independent. Have adventures and make sure you answer to nobody but yourself is her message. The group hang on her every word and head girl Di (Juno Temple) is especially hypnotised by her teachers’ charms. …

Bill Nighy: 'I am not suddenly the greatest actor in the world'

19 November 2009 3:54 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The star of Stephen Poliakoff's forthcoming Glorious 39 on his neuroses, playing educated toffs and why he digs David Hare

"A machiavellian dandy . . . Pure coldheartedness . . . Fabulously insincere." As I read out reviews of an old Bill Nighy performance, the actor grimaces and drums his knuckles on the table. "If ever a face was made for villainy, it's Bill Nighy's," I continue. "Wow," he murmurs. "Nighy's decadently long jaw and narrow, sneaky eyes serve him well . . ." He snorts, amused. "Sneaky eyes! Long decadent jaw! My God. I didn't know I had a decadent jaw."

Perhaps it is how Glorious 39 unfolds around him that makes you never quite trust Nighy as Alexander Keyes, a devoted father and aristocratic Conservative MP in Stephen Poliakoff's sumptuous new thriller about appeasement, set on the eve of the second world war. But perhaps Nighy has a singular talent for projecting unreliability into charming characters. …

10 Most Underrated Young Actresses

22 October 2009 1:48 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Can the media alter the public's perception of an actor? I believe so - that's why we have the likes of Megan Fox hugging the headlines and getting the covers of men's magazines, while a lot of more talented young actresses could not even manage to get featured and have interviews. If you think about it, what has she done in the movies to deserve so much publicity and attention? - - -

- - - Some may argue, 'hey, don't blame her, she's just good at playing the Hollywood game, and she got a shrewd agent managing her career!'. That maybe so and yes, I agree when others say 'she'll not last another year - others will soon take over'. There are those who may say 'Agents and talent managers always take care of their wards - that's why stars have a public image and a private one'. …

Dench Injured In Dinner Accident

13 October 2009 5:16 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Dame Judi Dench is nursing injured hands after they were slashed open on broken plates at a dinner party.

The star's left hand was swathed in dressing and her fingers covered in bandages while she spoke onstage at the Cheltenham Literature Festival in the U.K. on Saturday.

But her Notes On A Scandal director Sir Richard Eyre has downplayed the accident, which occurred after the star had enjoyed a meal at his home.

He explains, "Judi characteristically was getting up with a large pile of plates after dinner and she slipped on her way to the dishwasher and cut her hand in a very, very dramatic way." …

Now Playing: The Dire Days of Summer

11 September 2009 9:45 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Robert here looking at new releases this week. If you hadn't noticed (of course you've noticed) we've entered a strange barren time of year when the whiz-bang of summer has died off and the post-fest Oscar season has yet to start up. Pickings are slim so I'll remind you that these films are still in theaters: The Hurt Locker, Ponyo, District 9, In the Loop.

9 - The one film attempting to position itself for Oscar recognition will have an uphill climb, especially since three Animated Feature spots have practically been snatched up by Coraline, Ponyo, and Up, and there's plenty of competition for two remaining, should there be two remaining. Critical reaction hasn't been very kind, except toward the visuals and I'm reminded of how many filmmakers today are fantastic visual artists desperately in need of writers who aren't anywhere to be found. Madonna Wants Cate Blanchett To Star In Her New Musical

31 August 2009 11:24 PM, PDT | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Madonna wants Cate Blanchett to star in her new musical. The "4 Minutes" singer is set to direct and produce "Wallis" - following the life of American socialite Wallis Simpson, who Britain's King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry - and wants the "Notes On A Scandal" actress to take on the lead role opposite "Doctor Who" actor David Tennant after opting against casting Keira Knightley.

A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "The final script is now written and the locations have been scouted. Madonna is now trying to assemble the cast and put the finances in place."

"The first scene of the film is an old woman in her 90s living on her own in a Parisian flat. She starts to tell her life story to her housekeeper. It turns out the old woman is Wallis Simpson."

"There will be a song for each decade of her life. …

With her sophomore novel What Was She Thinking? Notes On A Scandal, Zoë Heller wound up shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and thrust into the spotlight of literary genius. All the qualities that led her so quickly to those heights—deft, economical characterization, a gift for empathizing with difficult people, and an effortless creativity with language—are in evidence in her latest novel, The Believers. Set among the Jewish leftist elite in New York City, Heller’s story of ideology and identity describes a family of women suffering in secret who destroy each other’s lives almost by reflex …
