Sweet As Pie
By: Steve Labate
Nellie McKay’s gorgeously understated new album, Normal As Blueberry Pie, is everything a tribute record should be. McKay shows a genuine love and respect for her subject, not to mention a seemingly intuitive understanding of the long-forgotten appeal of singer/actress Doris Day—who, over the years, has become synonymous with the stodgy, overly sentimental schmaltz of the irony-free era from which she came, an era that seems to lie across the chasm of history, out of our reach. Backed by some fantastically talented jazz musicians, McKay bridges this gap, breathing life into Day’s out-of-vogue material; giving old standards a new sense of purpose that transcends nostalgia and makes them feel at home in the modern world. She tackles both popular and obscure Day-delivered numbers—written by legends like George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Johnny Mercer,

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (April 17, 2009)

Best.Gay.Week.Ever? I don't think so. First, there was that Amazon.com kerfuffle where the online merchant began treating almost all books dealing with gay subject matter (even
purely academic ones) as adult content — excluding many very worthy titles from
their sales rankings system and standard searches.
One sad result? When you
type in "homosexuality" as a search on Amazon, the results are skewed
dramatically toward crap like this:
(Here's my bit of unsolicited advice to Amazon shoppers who might be interested in A Parent's Guide to Preventing
Homosexuality: "Do everyone a favor and don't have kids!")
So what's going on here? On the surface, it sure looked like
Amazon had adopted some sort of conservative policy to effectively bury
positive gay representation on their site.
But then company spokespersons variously blamed it on a computer "glitch,"
and a "ham-fisted cataloging error" and made assurances they were working on a fix.

The 'Shopaholic' star spends some downtime with her #1 girl.
Confessions of a Shopaholic actress Isla Fisher spent some time with daughter Olive Cohen in Coldwater Park in Beverly Hills yesterday.Olive checked out the scenery and feasted on some snacks that Mom provided her.At one point it was obvious that Fisher's daughter with her fiancé, Borat funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen, was ready for a nap. She put her head down on Mom's shoulder.Isla's film schedule seems to be clear since wrapping Confessions. Hopefully it has nothing to do with the poor reception the movie received after its release. The comedy made only $35 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo,.

Olive Cohen looked warm and toasty in her cocoon while Isla Fisher pushed her around Central Park yesterday. Isla day-to-day fashion choices don't stand out quite as much as Becky Bloomfeld's in Confessions of a Shopaholic, but Patricia Field said Isla looks fantastic in everything. In a recent interview, Isla says she respects Olive's right to privacy, but the actress talked about her own wardrobe and more. Here's more:
On how the movie changed her closet: "Until recently, my closet was overwhelmed. It was an eclectic mess of everything I'd ever owned since I was young. I don't shop a lot, so I was surprised that I was a hoarder. I was inspired to get rid of everything. Some clothes had meaning. There'd be a cute little top I met my fiancé in, but I'm not going to wear it again. I've had a kid since then. It doesn't fit me.

Video Game Review: ‘Wonder World Amusement Park’ Creates Portable Fun

Chicago – Majesco’s “Wonder World Amusement Park” for the Nintendo DS is a pleasurable diversion but could just as easily be deemed by some buyers to be a wasted opportunity to be something more. Ultimately, for a low purchase price and a game targeted at kids, it’s hard to complain too much about a title that will likely satisfy its target audience.
Reviewing a title like “Wonder World Amusement Park” can be difficult. Anyone with even casual gaming skills will burn through the “plot” of the game in under an hour. If you like detail, character, and story, then this is not the title for you. It’s merely a collection of mini-games, something that will be challenging for little kids and an occasional diversion for the older ones.

Could “Amusement Park” have been a little more diverse in its mini-game design and a little more in-depth?
