Oliver Stone pays tribute to the Americans at ground zero in his dramatization of the true story of two Port Authority policemen (Nicholas Cage and Michael Peņa) trapped in the rubble on September 11, 2001 after going in to rescue survivors, and their harrowing rescue. The usually cinematically flamboyant Stone directs with restraint and sober seriousness here, befitting the gravity of the subject matter. Maria Bello and Maggie Gyllenhaal play the wives awaiting news and Stephen Dorff, Jay Hernandez, and Michael Shannon co-star.
