IFC Films (with whom, full disclosure, we obviously share a parent company) will be delivering new films all holiday season to homes across the country through their Festival Direct and Sundance Selects labels. Meanwhile, in the newly launched Sundance Selects series, there's a pair of harrowing documentaries VOD premieres: Kief Davidson's coming-of-age boxing doc "Kassim the Dream" (Nov. 27) and the unvarnished biopic "Nick Nolte: No Exit" (Dec. »

The first thing everyone seems to mention about Serious Moonlight is that its screenplay is the last one written by the late Adrienne Shelly. Actress Cheryl Hines, who had a role in Shelly's film Waitress, is making her feature directorial debut with the dark comedy, which stars Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton. The movie opened Austin Film Festival this year. It sounds like a sure-fire comedy, but unfortunately it just left me with a headache.
Serious Moonlight focuses on a married couple, Louise (Meg Ryan) and Ian (Timothy Hutton), who are supposed to meet in their country house for a rendezvous, but both arrive a day early. Louise wants to surprise her husband, but finds out that he also has a surprise: he's leaving her. She refuses to accept this, and ends up cracking him on the head with a vase, binding him with duct tape, and refusing to let »

Cheryl Hines is a real sweetheart. One of the truly nicest people you'll ever meet. She's also wickedly funny, and a talented first-time director who stepped into a very challenging role two years ago in helming a deliciously dark comedy penned by my late wife Adrienne Shelly, who wrote, directed and co-starred in 2007's hit film Waitress. Adrienne wrote Serious Moonlight as her follow-up to Waitress, and was in development with it at the time of her tragic death November 1, 2006. I teamed with Waitress producer Michael Roiff to get the film made. Serious Moonlight is about a troubled marriage on the precipice, centering on a high-powered female attorney who learns that her husband is about to leave her for a much younger woman, and holds him captive until he promises to stay with her and love her forever. Taking on... »

On Thursday night, Austin Film Festival screened its opening-night movie, Serious Moonlight, at the Paramount. Director Cheryl Hines, pictured above, attended the screening and held a Q&A afterwards. The movie stars Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell and Justin Long, and was written by the late Adrienne Shelly (Waitress).
A number of film-pass holders were lined up for the film -- it turned out to be a good-sized audience, but everyone was able to get in.

Serious Moonlight is supposed to be a light-hearted comedy, but it's got long odds. First, there's the unlikely premise: Meg Ryan duct-tapes cheating husband Timothy Hutton to the toilet until she can force him to fall back in love with her. Then, there's the side-story of loss, as Serious Moonlight is based on a script by Adrienne Shelly, who was brutally murdered before her film Waitress was scooped up at Sundance in 2007.
And finally, there's one other thing. And I think you know what that thing is. »

"Curb Your Enthusiasm's" Cheryl Hines makes her feature directing debut with "Serious Moonlight" from Magnolia Pictures.
With a script by Adrienne Shelly ("Waitress"), the film will debut via video-on-demand on Nov. 6, followed by a theatrical release starting Dec. 4.
In the romantic comedy, high-powered lawyer Louise arrives at her family's country house expecting a romantic getaway with her husband (Timothy Hutton). Unfortunately, he's expecting his much younger girlfriend (Kristen Bell). In a sort of "Misery" meets "The Ref"... »

Did you know that "some threatening behavior" is a reason to give a film a R rating? And would you suspect a movie written by the late Adrienne Shelly (Waitress) and directed by Curb Your Enthusiasm's Cheryl Hines would have that ratings board warning hanging over its head?
The movie is Serious Moonlight, and it stars Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, and Kristen Bell as points along a bizarre love triangle. It played the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and will be released in December. I loved Waitress; it's one of the better films from 2007. This, though, does not look any good at all.
I'm sure there was a point where Meg Ryan was convincing, but that time seems to have passed. I mean, even in these little moments in the trailer, she seems completely disconnected with the material. The unfortunate thing in this case is that Ryan's the selling point, »

Time flies... We're rapidly approaching the third anniversary of Adrienne Shelly's death. Although she spent almost twenty years in the business, Shelly was killed just as her career reached an inspiring new level with Waitress, the sweetly effective story of a woman and creative pie-maker coming to terms with the fact that she's having a child with the husband she hates. Shelly left behind a number of unfinished projects, one of which was Serious Moonlight, a film that Waitress co-star Cheryl Hines took over in her memory.
Almost two years after that news hit, we've finally got a trailer courtesy of Yahoo. (You can see it after the jump.) I'm happy to say that Shelly's vision and personality are immediately visible in the trailer. You could almost close your eyes and imagine what she would have done with it. However, I can't figure out whether it's the casting that I'm having a problem with, »

Meg Ryan has officially entered The First Wives Club chapter of her career. One year after starring as a spurned wife in the disappointing remake of The Women, she's the lead in Serious Moonlight, opposite Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell, and Justin Long. Hutton plays her cheating husband, and when she discovers his affair with Bell, she ties him to the toilet until he falls back in love with her. The film, due in December, is equally notable for its writer and director. The late Adrienne Shelly (Waitress) penned the script, and Curb Your Enthusiasm's Cheryl Hines receives her first directing credit. »

When a romantic weekend getaway goes horribly wrong, Meg Ryan's Louise takes matter into her own hand. Magnolia Pictures has presented a brand new trailer for "Serious Moonlight" through Yahoo! Movies. The trailer offers a peek at the efforts the high-powered Manhattan attorney takes to work on her marriage to her husband of 13 years and the problems that ensue.
Thinking of having one romantic weekend with her husband, Louise is up for a big surprise when she arrives at her country home and learns that Ian is leaving her for a younger woman. One thing leads to another, she ends up duct-tapping him to the toilet and won't release him until he professes his love for her and commits to working on their marriage.
But, that's the least of their problems. The unexpected arrival of an opportunistic young gardener, who breaks into their home, and Ian's impatient mistress only »

Magnolia Pictures has debuted the official trailer for Serious Moonlight, the last screenplay written by the late Adrienne Shelly (Sudden Manhattan, Waitress) directed by her friend and actress Cheryl Hines. This comedy stars Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell, and Justin Long, all of whom are playing roles which they don't seem to fit (where was the casting director on this?). I wanted to give this a chance, but sadly, it just looks bad, bad, bad. And I'm guessing that has to do more with Cheryl Hines' directing than it does Adrienne Shelly's script. And also no one likes Meg Ryan anymore and she isn't funny in this at all. Nathan Fillion has a rakish, confident, real-man presence that is completely refreshing, partially due to the fact that manliness is an increasingly rare quality in actors. Joss Whedon put it to good use in the cowboy sci-fi cult series Firefly, its film adaptation Serenity, and the writer's strike online hit Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog (where Fillion played 'Captain Hammer'), and ABC has been taking advantage of him lately with roles on Desperate Housewives and a lead on the show Castle. In James Mottern's Trucker, which premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, Fillion is in a supporting role as Runner, the best friend of Michelle Monaghan's titular trucker, Diane Ford. It's a relationship that takes turns both familiar and surprising, and Fillion and Monaghan have a chemistry not unlike his doctor/patient heat with Keri Russell in Waitress. We got Fillion to take a break from his presumably »

Earlier this month a memorial garden dedicated to the life and work of director and actress Adrienne Shelly was unveiled in Manhattan's West Village. Filmmaker intern Melissa Silvestri was there for the opening and files this report. Nearly three years ago this November, actress/writer/director Adrienne Shelly's life was cut short by a brutal act of violence. Her unique and indelible spirit is sorely missed, as evidenced by her most recent film, Waitress, which she wrote, directed, and co-starred in as the shy but sweet waitress named Dawn, looking for love. Since then, her husband, Andrew Ostroy, has carried on his late wife's work, through founding the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, a non-profit organization that gives support to emerging... »

The murder of Adrienne Shelly was obviously not just a devastating loss to her friends and family, but to the people who followed her work eagerly from her early days as a star in Hal Hartley movies like The Unbelievable Truth and Trust. (By the by, Trust is only available on VHS, and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one rushing to buy it on DVD.) She was also just getting back into writing and directing after taking a break for a few years; Waitress, which she wrote, directed, and also acted in, had just been accepted to Sundance when she was murdered. (Read Jeffrey M. Anderson's take on the movie and her murder.)
Through the efforts of her husband Andy Ostroy and friends and costars like Cheryl Hines and Keri Russell, Waitress was shephered through the festivals, inevitable press days, and release. Ostroy also began the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, »

Among the many sad things about the 2006 murder of writer-actress-director Adrienne Shelly was the fact that she left behind a screenplay that was apparently intended to be her next film, after Waitress, which she finished just before her death. The acclaim Waitress received from critics and audiences throughout 2007 gave Shelly's husband, Andy Ostroy, even more reason to keep her spirit alive by producing the film, and now audiences will have a chance to see it.
The film, Serious Moonlight, premiered at Tribeca in April, and now indieWIRE reports that it's been acquired by Magnolia Pictures, which will make it available through its video-on-demand system in November and release it theatrically in December. Cheryl Hines, who co-starred with Shelly in Waitress and is best known for her work on Curb Your Enthusiasm, directed the project, her first feature film.Filed under: Comedy, Independent, New Releases, Distribution

New fun for Wednesdays! We look at an image from an upcoming movie and write snarky, witty, or otherwise entertaining captions for it. No prizes, it’s just for fun. Serious Moonlight is the directorial debut of actress Cheryl Hines, and it was written by Adrienne Shelly, who was murdered in 2006 just as her film Waitress was beginning to make a splash. Bummer. But we can still have fun with the movie. The film stars Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell, and Justin Long. The synopsis, courtesy of Magnolia Pictures: Serious Moonlight is about a troubled marriage on the precipice, centering on a high-powered female attorney who learns that her husband is about to leave her for a much younger woman, and holds him captive until he promises to stay with her and love her forever. »

Magnolia Pictures will release Cheryl Hines’ directorial debut Serious Moonlight, which stars (unfortunately) Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell and Justin Long on December 4, 2009. It was written by sadly missed writer/director Adrienne Shelly (Waitress) who was murdered in her own home.

The film will be released through Magnolia’s Ultra VOD program, launching the film this November on VOD platforms in 50-million households one month prior to its theatrical release in early December.

More good news for Tribeca Film Festival alumni! Tff 2009 favorite Serious Moonlight, directed by Cheryl Hines from a script by indie favorite Adrienne Shelly (Waitress), has been picked up for distribution by Magnolia Pictures. The dark comedy, which stars Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton as a couple going through, shall we say, marital entanglements, will be in theaters in December 2009, with a VOD release a month earlier. Kristen Bell - playing one of the said entanglements - and Justin Long round out the talented cast. See photos from the afterparty at Tff 2009! »

By now you'd have to be living under a rock not to know that legendary pop icon Michael Jackson has died at the age of 50. So I will skip the details. I know an awful lot about sudden, premature death given that my wife -- the actor, writer, director Adrienne Shelly (Waitress) was brutally murdered in November 2006. But the tragic irony is that Adrienne died at the absolute happiest point in her entire life. Michael Jackson, like Elvis, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Anna Nicole Smith and countless others before him, were extremely tortured souls. They died miserable. Lonely. Drugged. Hating life. And for this they deserve our compassion, not our scorn. Now is not a time to vilify Jackson for his alleged child molestation crimes. We should have it in our hearts to forgive his past... »

Of the half-dozen scripts that actress/writer/director Adrienne Shelly completed before her tragic death in 2006, "Serious Moonlight" isn't the obvious choice for first posthumous film to be made from her work. Produced by her husband Andy Ostroy, who's committed to making all of her scripts into films, it's a dissection of how a marriage can go wrong between a long-wedded couple (Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton). After her breakthrough film as a director, the sweet-natured "Waitress," "Serious Moonlight" is decidedly sour: Ryan's long-suffering Louise takes her husband hostage by duct-taping him to a toilet; while a subplot involving home invasion might feel too close for comfort to those who know the details of Shelly's murder. Yet in spite of those peculiarities, there is something all too perfect about "Serious Moonlight" as a showcase for Shelly's idiosyncratic and wistful point of view. Its director, Cheryl Hines, took on the unenviable »
