Following his blockbuster success with the Michael Jackson concert film This Is It, Kenny Ortega is returning to the musical genre for Universal's adaptation of In the Heights. The Tony Award-winning show is reportedly a favorite of the choreographer-turned-director, who is currently best known as the helmer of the three High School Musical films. According to Variety, Ortega pitched himself to the studio by admitting it's a dream gig and now says the assignment is one of the greatest things to happen in his life.
The Broadway musical is about a bodega owner in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan who inherits his grandfather's lottery winnings and plans on retiring in the Dominican Republic. Through the course of the three-day-long plot, he says goodbye to his regular customers who he begins to realize are like his family. Glee: Five reasons why E4's musical comedy is worth watching

Glee might sound frighteningly like High School Musical for grown ups - but you can't afford to miss E4's new show
A bunch of perky teenagers singing choral versions of chart hits and jiggling their jazz hands like there's no tomorrow? That might not sound like your cup of tea. In fact you might rather have that cup of tea tipped into your lap than be forced to watch it. But there's more to Glee than meets the eye. And while the rest of the series won't be on British TV until after Christmas, the pilot episode arrives on E4 tonight – which is precisely why everyone should know five reasons their telly-watching schedule should include a little Glee.
1. It's happy television
It may the middle of a miserable winter in the middle of miserable economic funk, but in a world of grey, Glee is a big bouncing bundle of joy.

In the Heights Heads to Film

After parting ways with the Footloose remake, High School Musical director Kenny Ortega has a new project lined up: In the Heights.
Written and composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, In the Heights is a 2008 Broadway musical that documents three days in a Dominican-American neighborhood in New York City's Washington Heights. In the Heights went on to be nominated for 13 Tony awards, winning for Best Musical.
Miranda will star in and produce the film version, while Ortega takes over directing duties. In the Heights goes beyond the typical Broadway musical fare, even by contemporary standards, featuring salsa, merengue, soul music, and hip-hop.
Though, I haven't seen the musical in its entirety, what I have seen of it I loved. And, though I'm sure it will speak to Latinos from all over the country, I think it has an extra special something for those of us who grew up in Hispanic neighborhoods in New York City.

Variety is reporting that director/choreographer Kenny Ortega (High School Musical, This is It) will now helm the big screen adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, In the Heights, after leaving the planned Footloose remake earlier this year. The musical covers three days in the upper Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, “where a bodega owner who inherited his grandfather’s lottery windfall plots his retirement to a Dominican Republic beach. As he bids farewell to his customers on the block, he becomes conflicted about leaving behind a group that has become family.” Lin-Manuel Miranda will reprise his starring role (he also wrote the lyrics and music) and Quiara Alegria Hudes, who wrote the show, will be adapting the script to the screen.
Universal will be producing the film and I have to give them some credit for not deciding to replace Miranda with a big name star. The film
