#1 New poster for Daniel Calparsoro's "Circus"

We'd previous brought you a detailed description of Daniel Calparsoro's film which essentially sees an American family stranded in the middle of the desert with a circus of crazies. The good folks at Bd have uncovered a new poster for the film. It's pretty spiffy!

#2 Richard Matheson's "Real Steel" coming to the big screen

Not sure how I feel about news that Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy is at the helm of this project but the story of a "father and son action drama set in the near future, surrounding the sport of robot boxing" sounds promising, as does the tidbit that Hugh Jackman is in talks to star in the production. At the very least we know the special effects will look good. [via Sci-Fi Wire]

Wolverine star Hugh Jackman to take on boxing robots in Real Steel

25 November 2009 7:09 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Fans of the X-Men films have long been wanting to see the Sentinels - giant mutant-hunting robots - on the big screen.

The metal menaces were due to feature in X2 but had to be cut from the script because they would be too expensive. The head of a Sentinel was seen briefly in X-Men: The Last Stand, and the robots were rumoured to be part of an early script for X-Men Origins: Wolverine but never made it to the final draft. (There were Sentinels in the tie-in video game, though).

Whether Sentinels will ever be part of the X-Men movies is anyone's guess, but in the meantime Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman will be taking on robots in his next film.

Jackman is to star in sci-fi movie Real Steel, based on a short story by Richard Matheson in which a fighter has to reinvent himself when human boxers are replaced by machines. »

The apocalypse goes "1970s pop sci-fi" in The Arcadian

24 November 2009 11:38 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The Arcadian is an upcoming post-apocalyptic adventure that follows actor J. Larose (of Saw III, Saw IV, and Repo! The Genetic Opera fame) as an enigmatic warrior called "The Lighthouse Keeper" who goes on a quest for "revenge and redemption in a strange future world" we're told is "reminiscent of wild 1970s pop sci-fi."

Inspired in equal parts by samurai movies, rock operas, and underground comics, we're told that the visual world of The Arcadian will be an homage to the work of underground illustrators and be something quite unique due to the fact that it was shot entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II camera - chosen for its unparalleled low-light sensitivity.

The Arcadian has just wrapped principle photography and is heading into an intense round of post. It is due Q2, 2010.

To make up for the fact that we have no detailed plot synopsis yet, we've included a »

Hugh Jackman Confirmed to Star in Real Steel

24 November 2009 8:16 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Back in early October, actor Hugh Jackman was rumored to be in negotiations to star in DreamWorks' robot boxing movie, Real Steel. Now it's confirmed, according to Variety.

Director Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) will direct Real Steel, DreamWorks' first motion picture since receiving $850 million in much-needed financing following the split with Paramount last year.

Jackman will play an ex-fighter in a near-future world where human boxers have been replaced by robots. Jackman's character discovers a junked robot that has a knack for winning and begins promoting the electronic fighter on the Robot Boxing circuit. Along the way, he gets acquainted with the 11-year-old son that he never knew he had.

DreamWorks co-president of production Mark Sourian said that DreamWorks will "put the pedal to metal" on making the movie. Described by Levy as a "rousing sports movie," Real Steel's original script, written by Dan Gilroy, has been reworked twice, »

Hugh Jackman in the ring for Real Steel

24 November 2009 5:11 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Hugh Jackman has signed on to play a former boxer in Shawn Levy's futuristic thriller where robots are the heavyweights

Hugh Jackman has signed on to play a former boxer who launches a new career as a promoter of battling robots in Real Steel. Steven Spielberg's Dreamworks is backing the project, which is being billed as an $80m (£48.25m) futuristic play on the Rocky films. Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy will take charge of the cameras.

In the film, Jackman's character is forced to leave a life in the ring when robots replace human fighters as the biggest draw. He stumbles upon a discarded machine that always seems to win, and sets about using it to try and revive his fortunes, along the way bonding with an 11-year-old son he has only just met.

Hugh Jackman Confirmed For Real Steel

24 November 2009 3:59 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

It has been confirmed that Hugh Jackman has been tapped for the Dreamworks production of “Real Steel”, a film based on the Richard Matheson (The Button) story about an ex-fighter that turns to the sport of robot on robot gladiatorial combat to make ends meet. Since he’s poor and can’t afford decent buzzsaws and giant pincers, he must turn to the scrapheap where he magically finds a droid that has the pluck to win! The original Richard Matheson story was turned into a Twilight Zone episode so it can’t be as Disney as it sounds. Apparently, the budget for this movie is only 80 million. Speculation abounds that you just can’t make a Sci-Fi movie these days for such a ridiculous pittance. Leslie Bohem (Taken) and John Gatins (Summer Catch, Dreamer) rewrote the script based on the original by Dan Gilroy (who was paid 850,000!) Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum series, »

Hugh Jackman To Star In Real Steel

24 November 2009 3:03 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

After months of speculation, Hugh Jackman has been confirmed as the star of the upcoming sci-fi sports drama Real Steel.

The film will be the first project for DreamWorks following its split from Paramount last year, and will be made from a budget of $80 million, which is significantly lower than the usual amount of cash plugged into sci-fi flicks these days.

The film tells the story of a father (Jackman) and his estranged 11-year-old son who enter the world of robotic boxing. The father is an ex-fighter who has to come to terms with the changes in his profession when human boxing is outlawed and the fighters have been replaced by robots. He decides to become a promoter, but has problems finding the perfect fighter until he stumbles across a discarded robot that always seems to win.

The film is being directed by Shawn Levy (Night At The Museum) from »

Hugh Jackman Confirmed to Star in Shawn Levy's Real Steel

24 November 2009 12:03 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

The freshly funded (with $825 million) DreamWorks has greenlit its first project - Real Steel, which will be directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and star Hugh Jackman. You've probably heard about this project before, as we've written about it twice before. Real Steel is a futuristic Rocky-esque story about a father and son who take their human-like 2000-pound robot to the Bot Boxing Championship. It's originally based on a short story by Richard Matheson that was adapted by Dan Gilroy (Freejack, The Fall) in 2005 (that draft was sold to DreamWorks for $850,000) then revised by John Gatins (Hardball, Coach Carter). Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider will both be producing at DreamWorks, the first movie they've greenlit since splitting with Universal. The budget will reportedly be about $80 million, which is less than most of Spielberg's big projects these days. Peter from SlashFilm is actually concerned, saying: "But ... »

Hugh Jackman Confirmed to Star in Shawn Levy’s Real Steel

23 November 2009 8:15 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

We already kind of knew this, but Variety is now confirming that Hugh Jackman will in fact star in director Shawn Levy’s (Night at the Museum) robot boxing movie, Real Steel.  Jackman will star as a boxer who becomes a struggling robo-boxing promoter after human fighting is deemed too violent.  Since this is a Shawn Levy we are talking about, there is also going to be this whole subplot going on about him reconnecting with a 13 year old son he never knew he had.  Matt sums up my thoughts on this one perfectly when he says “Why are talented actors working with Shawn Levy?”

The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Josh Klausner, co-writer of Shrek the Third and writer of next year’s comedy Date Night, is about to start work on adapting the novel The Ten Best Days Of My Life, by Adena Halpern. The story concerns a woman who has to win a place in the top level of heaven by recounting the titular ten days.

Amy Adams, most recently seen in Julie and Julia and next month’s Moonlight Serenade, is set to star and produce. Directing and co-producing will be Shawn Levy, best known for Night at the Museum 1 and 2, the latter of which featured Adams.

Levy also directed the afore-mentioned Fox movie Date Night, closing the loop nicely. Read THR’s article here.

Josh Klausner will adapt "The Ten Best Days of My Life" written by Adena Halpern. Fox is developing the film as a starring vehicle for Amy Adams as well as a directing vehicle for Shawn Levy ("Night at the Museum"). The book tells of a woman who dies and goes to the top of the afterlife echelon -- called Seventh Heaven. However, she is in danger of being demoted to a lower level unless she can prove that she has lived a worthwhile life by recounting her 10 best days. Penguin published the novel in May 2008. Adams is apparently making her debut on this as a producer and Levy is producing through 21 Laps. »

Shawn Levy Talks Plans For Hugh Jackman In Real Steel

13 November 2009 6:13 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Hugh Jackman is currently arguing with Daniel Craig every night on Broadway in the play A Steady Rain, but he's not going to be going from there directly back to his Wolverine claws. In the meantime he's got his eye on Real Steel, a movie that has several crazy things going for it. 1) It is directed by Night at the Museum's Shawn Levy. 2) It is about robot boxing. 3) Its director is comparing it to Rocky. Yes, Levy is apparently fearless and is comparing Real Steel to the most famous boxing movie of all time. In an interview with Sci Fi Wire, Levy said, "It's faithful to the [original Richard Matheson] story in that that story was very much about a down-on-his-luck, slightly desperate journeyman who works in this robot boxing sport and who is desperately needing redemption and one last shot. The movie is more Rocky than Transformers." Levy also ... »

Exclusive Video: Carla Gugino Is One of the Women in Trouble

13 November 2009 6:09 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Career-wise, there seems to be no trouble on the horizon for actress Carla Gugino. The actress best known for Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids films and her role on TV's Entourage has been busy lately working in some of Hollywood's most successful films starting with Rodriguez's Sin City in 2005 and followed by Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller, American Gangster opposite Russell Crow, Righteous Kill with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino and most recently the starring role in Disney's remake Race to Witch Mountain. But it was her role earlier this year as Sally Jupiter in Zach Snyder's brilliant comic book-adapted Watchmen that made her a household name amongst fan-boys and the actress will be collaborating once again with Snyder in his upcoming film Sucker Punch!. However, the she can currently be seen on screen as porn star Elektra Luxx in director Sebastian Gutierrez's new female-ensemble-comedy Women in Trouble, »

Those looking to get a glimpse at next year’s NBC Thursday primetime lineup-inspired hybrid film are in luck as 20th Century Fox has release the first trailer for the upcoming Steve Carell and Tina Fey romantic, action, comedy film Date Night.

This marks the first film by director Shawn Levy since his box office hits Night at the Museum and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian raked in over $1 Billion. Not only does Levy have a new film, but also a script written by the talented Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen) with revisions by Josh Klausner (Shrek The Third), Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and Aline Bros McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). (You may remember the names Simon Kinberg and Aline Brosh McKenna as they are the writing team to sell a $2 million film pitch to Paramount with J.J. Abrams.)

Shawn Levy Wants Hugh Jackman for 'Real Steel'

13 November 2009 1:28 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

You probably didn't see The Box. I think that's clear. So I'll reference I Am Legend as something from writer Richard Matheson with which you might be familiar. The sci-fi author even wrote some Twilight Zone episodes early on, and his latest film adaptation, Real Steel, may star Hugh Jackman as a futuristic fighter battling robots for his last shot at glory.

Director Shawn Levy - clearly not one of the first hundred choices on my list for something like this - tells Sci-Fi Wire that Jackman is the front-runner to play the lead role in the film. The news came during an interview for the DVD release of Levy's Night at the Museum sequel. See what I mean? Way down on the list.

In the story, human boxing has gone the way of...well, heavyweight boxing. So instead, people watch robot boxing. I don't buy that, personally, because where's the catharsis? »
