Kick-Ass Character Posters Spell Things Out

5 November 2009 6:48 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The folks at IGN have debuted for new character posters from the upcoming Lionsgate release Kick-Ass, from director Matthew Vaughn and the mind of Wanted writer Mark Millar. This comic property, now highly anticipated due to a wicked-cool showing at the San Diego Comic-Con this year, will star Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as average folks (mostly kids) who dress up as superheros and take on crime. Well, sort of. The new round of posters shows off the characters in costume. And when put together -- seen above -- they spell out the film's title and the most likely pun that critics will use if the film succeeds with its plans to delight audiences with mayhem: Kick-Ass kicks ass. Get it? Alas, here are the posters and some character descriptions. Click any of the posters to see the larger versions at IGN. First up is Davi Lizewski (Johnson), the central character of the »

John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker Go 'Red'

5 November 2009 4:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When Warren Ellis' Red was first optioned, I wasn't particularly excited. As readers have pointed out, Ellis has many books that would be more exciting to see on the big screen. The initial casting of Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman didn't inspire a lot of excitement, either. (I love both, but Willis as an ex-assassin? Hardly inspired.) But as Robert Schwentke has filled out his cast, things have gotten a lot more interesting. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mary-Louise Parker and John C. Reilly are in talks to join Red alongside Freeman, Willis, and Helen Mirren.

Reilly would play a retired CIA agent who is paranoid that everyone is out to kill him. Willis' predicament will naturally prove him right, and it's the frantic, nervous role that Reilly specializes in. Again, it's not the most inspired casting, but it's exciting to see Reilly finally land a comic book role. »

Kick-Ass posters

5 November 2009 2:42 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

It's certainly looking like Kick-ass was a gamble that will pay off. Director Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Layer Cake) independently financed the movie, based on the high-concept shock book by Wanted comic writer Mark Millar. Massive fan response at Comic Con then led to a studio bidding war, and now Lionsgate has the movie coming out in April (with enough confidence to bump Sly's The Expendables from that date into August). The ultraviolent story revolves around a geeky teen who randomly... »

Angelina Jolie in New Teaser Trailer as Agent Salt

4 November 2009 5:42 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I love salt, all types of salt really – Sea salt, table salt, rock salt and Evelyn Salt. Not familiar with that last one? She’s next summer’s female action spy played the ever so pouty-lipped Angelina Jolie. At one point, Tom Cruise was rumored to be attached to the Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, The Bone Collector) directed secret double agent yarn but ultimately, Noyce and company decided to go with a more feminine touch. Good move guys!

Jolie has proven time and again that she is the go-to woman in Hollywood for lead female action roles. Say what you want about the Tomb Raider movie, but as Lara Croft there can be no other woman playing the part. Same goes for her roles in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and last summer’s Wanted. In Salt, she appears to be just as convincing while playing a wrongly accused woman on the run. »

Watch the First Trailer For "Salt"

4 November 2009 3:10 PM, PST | Reel Empire | See recent Reel Empire news »

Today, Columbia Pictures released the first trailer for their upcoming spy-thriller "Salt" which stars Angelina Jolie ("Wanted"). The film follows an agent by the name of Salt who finds herself set-up as a Russian spy. She's left out running government officials in an attempt to prove her innocence. Looks like a cross between "Wanted" and "The Bourne Identity". Simply put, it looks awesome! You can check out the official trailer inside. "Salt" is scheduled to hit theaters sometime next Summer!

Salt Trailer Starring Angelina Jolie (in English)

4 November 2009 11:53 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Earlier this week, a Russian trailer for the upcoming Angelina Jolie action-thriller Salt found its way online, but was quickly pulled down by Sony... and really, who wants to see a low-quality, dubbed version of a trailer anyway? (A lot of people... I know.) Today they have debuted the first domestic trailer for the film over at Yahoo! [1], and although it looks fairly action-packed, I can't say there is anything all that noteworthy about it either. Is Angelina Jolie really the biggest current female action star? It seems weird to say that, but I guess her filmography proves it. Either way, I'm sure they're hoping to attract fans of Wanted with this one. The production history on Salt has kind of a weird twist in that Tom Cruise was originally supposed to star in the lead role (and not in drag). Somewhere along the way they rewrote the story so »

Must Watch: Intense Teaser Trailer for Angelina Jolie's Salt

4 November 2009 10:45 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Sony has debuted the teaser trailer for Salt, starring Angelina Jolie and directed by Phillip Noyce, their big action movie due out next July. So instead of Wanted this summer, we'll be seeing Angelina Jolie become a female Jason Bourne in Salt. And after watching this trailer, I have to say that's perfectly fine by me, as it looks pretty badass. Throw Mission Impossible into the mix, too, as this looks like they took the best of all three super spies (Bourne, Hunt, Fox), made him a her, and put her into her own movie. For a teaser, this looks great. It'll definitely be one of the summer movies I'm looking forward to seeing. Same with you? Russian trailer for Angelina Jolie’s Salt

I’m sure Columbia didn’t intend for anyone to see the first trailer for Angelina Jolie’s Salt in Russia (apart from the Russians obviously) but that’s what’s happened. Mark Millar: Comic Creator, Screenwriter, Movie Director?

3 November 2009 3:30 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Scottish comic book writer Mark Millar has been getting awfully cozy in Hollywood over the past couple of years. In addition to seeing the film version of his graphic novel Wanted bank for more than $340 million worldwide,  Millar has been able to work closely with director Matthew Vaughn on the film adaptation of his comic series, Kick-Ass, which comes out in April 2010. Now, according to the man himself, Millar is planning on getting behind the camera for his very own directorial debut. According to Millar’s personal website, principal photography on the project begins in March 2010.

Ah, but you must be saying to yourself, “Rob! You didn’t tell else what movie Millar is directing. Are you some kind of incompetent fool?” Friends, if I knew I would tell you, I promise. Unfortunately, Millar is keeping his lips sealed until February when more release details will be coming out.

'Kick-Ass' Co-Creator Mark Millar To Direct Secret Movie Project?

2 November 2009 12:39 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

From "Wanted" to "Kick-Ass," the comic book work of Mark Millar has had a happy home on film. Now, it appears that the writer is looking to get a word in edgewise with the movie medium by making his debut as a director.

Over at Millar's official website, the writer revealed that he'll be directing his very own superhero movie for the big screen. While he wouldn't reveal the title or storyline for the new film, Millar did say that he'd approach the original project much the same as director Matthew Vaughn approached "Kick-Ass"—in other words, without the backing of a big studio.

"I'm doing what Matthew Vaughn did with Kick-Ass and just making it outside the system with private investors," said Millar. "The financing is all secured and the movie stands or falls on how good I can make it, doing what Matthew did and just selling it once completed. »

Mark Millar Announces He Will Be Directing a Superhero Movie

2 November 2009 8:50 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

But it's not Superman! Comic book author Mark Millar (of Wanted and Kick-Ass most famously) made a surprise announcement on his forums (via ComingSoon) this morning stating that he'll be directing his own superhero movie sometime in the next few years. Millar explains that "I learned a lot from Kick-Ass and love having the same creative freedom I have with comics when I work in cinema." However he doesn't want to be a "studio bitch" and has decided to independently finance and produce this entire movie on his own. But what exactly will it be an adaptation of? "That's all a secret for now." Maybe it's one of his own comics? Millar goes on to explain: "The financing is all secured and the movie stands or falls on how good I can make it, doing what Matthew [Vaughn did on Kick-Ass] and just selling it once completed." That worked well ... »

But What Mark Millar Really Wants to Do is Direct

2 November 2009 8:32 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Sure, he’s a famous comic book writer, but what Scotsman Mark Millar (writer of “Wanted” and the upcoming “Kick-Ass”) really, really wants to do is direct big action movies. Okay, maybe not really wants to do, but he’s been offered the opportunity, and the writer of “Wanted” and the upcoming “War Heroes” has said yes. In fact, he said Yes a while ago, since according to Millar himself, his directorial debut will commence principal photography in March 2010. Under the thread title: “Millar To Direct Superhero Movie”, Mark Millar writes on his official forum: Bet you didn’t see That coming, laddies and lassies! But this is one of several big surprises planned for next year and you’ll hear a bit more about this in February when we start to release details. What is it? Who is it about? Well, that’s all a secret for now, but »

Wanted Creator Mark Millar Lines Up His Directorial Debut

2 November 2009 7:50 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Comics writer Mark Millar has recently become a fixture on the film scene, thanks in part to projects that adapt his comics Wanted and Kick-Ass. Now Millar has said that he's got a directorial project lined up for himself. Next year he'll make the Frank Miller move, turning from comics writer to film director, and in much less time than it took Miller. (Hopefully with more success, too.) What's the movie going to be? We know that it is a superhero thing, for one. Hit the jump for some info. Ok, here's the bait and switch: we don't know what the film and/or property is. Millar is teasing us with an announcement for now, saying that we'll get a title in February. But he's teasing with quite a bit of ancillary info. He explains that he'll make the film much as Kick-Ass was made: independent, without studio overhead and domineering. »

Morgan Freeman Is A Dirty Old Man?

1 November 2009 11:29 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Morgan Freeman, a man who boasts so much gravitas that he got away with explaining Wanted's Loom of Fate without sounding stupid, is set to play a Dirty Old Man in his next film (assuming it keeps its working title), with Peter "Get Smart" Segal ready to direct. The story centres on two playboys, one played by Freeman. When his best friend finally falls in love after forty years of playing the field, Freeman does everything he can to sabotage the match, in a scenario they describe as "Wedding Crashers meets 40 Year-Old Virgin". Kinda sounds rather a lot like My Best Friend's Wedding with old men if you ask us, but without the karaoke (probably).Josh Cagan (Bandslam, which isn't quite as bad as its poster would have you believe) and Greg Coolidge (Employee of the Month, which is as bad as the poster suggested) wrote the script, and »

Morgan Freeman Is an Old Dirty Man But Also One with Dignity and Gravitas

1 November 2009 11:23 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

If you want strong, quiet dignity with a voice so reassuring that you want it for every audiobook ever made, you call Morgan Freeman.  That’s why him shouting “Somebody kill This motherfucker!” in “Wanted” was one of the best movie moments of 2008.  Watching Freeman subvert his image has great comedic potential and it looks like Josh Cagan and Greg Coolidge’s script, “Old Dirty Man” may do just that.  Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR:

The script, which had a working title of “Dirty Old Men,” revolves around an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life and his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years (Freeman) who does everything to break up the new couple. The tone is described as similar to “Wedding Crashers” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.”

Freeman has attached himself to the Warner Bros. flick with Peter Segal (”Get Smart”) in talks to direct. »

Mark Millar to Direct Independently Financed Superhero Movie

1 November 2009 10:44 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Comic creator and writer Mark Millar, whose property Wanted became one of the break-out hits of last year and whose property Kick-Ass is churning up buzz left and right as it steams toward its April 2010 release, is directing. At least, that's what he's telling fans on his own official message board this evening. To be more specific, he's directing a "superhero" movie, and just like Matthew Vaughn did with Kick-Ass, he appears to be going outside the studio system to make a movie that is privately financed. It is interesting to see, as I just listened to the panel of experts talk about the state of independent filmmaking on this week's episode of Reject Radio. And one thing that stuck with me is when filmmaker Aaron Morgan talked about securing financing for a film, and the importance of putting names on a project that will give investors confidence. I will be interested to see what kind of »

Mark Millar Planning to Direct Superhero Film

1 November 2009 9:15 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Mark Millar, who created the comic books upon which Wanted and the upcoming Kick-Ass were based, has revealed on his official website that he plans to direct a superhero film next year and will use the approach of Kick-Ass—specifically, finding private investors.

But this is one of several big surprises planned for next year and you'll hear a bit more about this in February when we start to release details. What is it? Who is it about? 'Wanted,' 'Kick-Ass' Writer Millar To Direct Movie

1 November 2009 9:03 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Mark Millar's work is already well-known to a lot of movie fans. Last year, his graphic novel Wanted stromed the summer box office. His 2010 comic adaptation, Kick-Ass, looks like next year's Zombieland, and possibly even more fun if you can imagine that. And now, Millar says he's going to direct a superhero flick.

Comic Book Movie has the story from Millar himself, which is heavy on the introduction but light on the specifics. "What is it? Who is it about? Well, that's all a secret for now," hinted Millar emptily, "but I learned a lot from Kick-Ass and love having the same creative freedom I have with comics when I work in cinema." »
