3 December 2009 8:09 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to make his animated debut as the voice of Jack Frost in DreamWorks Animation’s The Guardians. DiCaprio has played in his fair share of films for sure but its amazing he has never lended his voice to the animated world. Guess that all ends now. So what is this Guardians film ?

Pulitzer Prize winning writer David Lindsay-Abaire (InkheartSpider-Man 4) will be writing the screenplay for the feature directorial debut of Peter Ramsey, who was head of story on Monsters vs. Aliens. The film is based on William Joyce’s upcoming book series ‘The Guardians of Childhood’. DiCaprio is the first actor to be announced in associated with the project.

Now here is the really cool premise of the film - “It focuses on an A-Team like squad of imaginary figures like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny who protect children from the forces of evil” (Fs. …

‘G.I. Joe’ Producer Grabs Nicolas Flamel Series

19 November 2009 11:11 AM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Comparing a series to J.K. Rowling’s has been the kiss of death in book adaptations for all but the Twilight saga.  Every few months another children’s movie crops up as “the next Harry Potter,” and ultimately takes a dive at the box office.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is a perfect example of “one and done” after it was paralleled to Potter.  Inkheart, starring Brendan Fraser, suffered the same fate.  Plus the failure of The Golden Compass and the declining appeal of even the Narnia series.  The upcoming Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief has also been cursed with the correlation, even picking up Potter veteran director Chris Columbus in an attempt to recapture the magic.

Which is why Transformers and G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura may have just doomed his new acquisition right out of the gate. The major Hollywood player has picked up the six-part fantasy …

Helen Mirren Turns Red with Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis

3 November 2009 2:27 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In a recent report from ScreenDaily, Helen Mirren has joined the cast of Robert Schwentke’s (”Flightplan”) upcoming action-thriller “Red”, based off the comic series by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer.  As we previously reported, “Red” is about “Paul Moses, a C.I.A. agent whose unique talent for killing took him around the world, from one hotspot to another, carrying out the deadly orders of his superiors. And when he retired, he wanted to put his bloody past behind him. But when a new administration takes over the White House, the powers that be decide that Moses knows too much, forcing him back into the game against the agency that trained him.  Sd provides no details as to Mirren’s role but I doubt it will have a moment as fantastic as her charging in on a unicorn as she did in “Inkheart”.

“Red” is scheduled to begin shooting on January 11th, …

Playwright Found For Guardians

2 November 2009 11:18 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

David Lindsay-Abaire, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and screenwriter for Spider-Man 4, has signed on to write the script for The Guardians, the DreamWorks fantasy kid's movie based on an upcoming series of books called The Guardians of Childhood by William Joyce.Yes, the books aren't even published yet and they've already got a scriptwriter. The premise of the stories is that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Man in the Moon and Jack Frost are part of a team that protects children from the forces of evil. Presumably with super-powers like eating cookies, hiding eggs and, er, shining in the sky at night.Lindsay-Abaire got his big break when his play, Rabbit Hole, won Tony Awards and Pulitzer Prizes in 2007, and has written screenplays for Inkheart and Robots as well as Shrek the Musical back on Broadway. This effort, meanwhile, has Peter Ramsey set to direct - he was Head of Story on Monsters vs. …

Helen Mirren Is Red Like Morgan Freeman

2 November 2009 10:39 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Helen Mirren has a way of making everything about getting older look awesome. She won her first Oscar at 62, was later photographed looking smoking hot in a bathing suit, and seems to take on whatever role suits her, whether it's riding a unicorn in Inkheart or romancing Tolstoy in The Last Station, out later this year. And now she's going for the comic book geeks. Screen Daily mentions in a brief rundown that Mirren is a new cast member in Red, the adaptation of the DC Comics story about a CIA agent brought back into the spy life when an assassin shows up to kill him. Mirren will probably play the role of Red's handler, who is one of his only contacts with the outside world after he leaves the CIA. Everything I know about Red has been gleaned from its bare-bones Wikipedia page, so I'd love for someone to …

Updates: Top 50 Hottest Young Actors - Rising Stars!

'Celebrating cinema's emerging talents' - That's our new slogan, and I think tMF has come a long way, but of course there is still room for improvement. I think we're lucky that our viewers care enough to tell us both our good and bad points. The October edition of the Top 50 Hitlist will reflect all these... In the meantime, tMF puts the spotlight on today's rising stars - these are the guys who really made a lot of buzz - grabbed plum roles despite intense competition and would be working with the industry's topnotch filmmakers, and more.

Find out who they are - you've certainly heard some of them and a few might be unfamiliar names, but take a closer look - you might be missing some names who are still 'under the radar' but would soon be rockin' the scene!

DVD Review: State Of Play

17 September 2009 7:27 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

So I was asked a few weeks ago if I’d like to review a DVD copy of State of Play, starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren and Robin Wright Penn and due for release on 21st September 2009. Having seen (and been blown away by) the film earlier this year, I could hardly pass up the opportunity now could I?

It’d be fair for me to start by saying that I’m not exactly what you might call a “Russell Crowe fan”, sure I’ll report on his films, and he is after all an A-list Hollywood star. But I feel he dragged down Gladiator and many other movies with his lack of on-screen personality. I’m sure that’ll get an angry email or two but we’re not a UK tabloid, and I’d prefer to tell the truth if possible.

That said, this …

Will Bruce Campbell enter ‘Spider-Man 4′ as a villain?

14 September 2009 12:58 PM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

While at the Los Angeles premier of the animated 3D feature Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Sam Raimi pal and Evil Dead man Bruce Campbell, recently told Access Hollywood that production on Spider-Man 4 will kick-off in January. The actor also noted that Raimi has informed the cult star that he will have a much larger role than the cameos he has had in the last three installments.

Rampant fan speculation has been all over the map regarding who the two new villains will be in fourth chapter. Though Campbell didn’t indicate what his major role would be, many believe that he may play Mysterio, the domed master of illusion. Others want the 58-year-old to play Craven.

Spider-Man 4 will star Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst with Sam Raimi returning to the director’s chair. The script was written by David Lindsay-Abaire (Inkheart) with a rewrite from Gary Ross

Here comes another batch of bite-sized film review nuggets. This round-up of DVD reviews include analysis of immigration stories intersecting in ‘Crossing Over,’ a fantasy adventure called ‘Inkheart,’ girls and boys figuring each other out in ‘He’s Just Not That Into You,’ a Hollywood picture gone goofy, ergo ‘The Deal‘, a classic novel turned movie called ‘Killshot‘ all … in 140 characters or less.

Karl Urban cast in horror thriller ‘Priest’

21 August 2009 1:04 PM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Karl Urban will play Black Hat, the villainous leader of vampires in the upcoming Screen Gems horror thriller Priest.

Set in a post-apocalyptic setting, Priest is based on the TokyoPop comic which revolves around a “world ravaged by war between man and vampires.”

Urban will play opposite Paul Bettany (Legion, Inkheart) who is cast as a battle-ready man of the cloth who teams up with a sheriff and a warrior priestess (Maggie Q) to track down a group of bloodsuckers who kidnapped his niece.

This isn’t the first thriller based on Christian theology for director Scott Stewart, whose upcoming angelic horror actioner, Legion, hits theaters on January 22, 2010.

Priest is is adapted by Cory Goodman from the graphic novel by Min-Woo Hyung and is looking for a release sometime in 2010.

Exclusive: First look at Johannes Roberts' mysterious new hooligan horror "F"

12 August 2009 10:44 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Brit director Johannes Roberts made waves in the horror scene a few years back when he created the first Mobile phone series, When Evil Calls. Then in 2007, Roberts worked that series into an extended feature starring Sean Pertwee and Dominique Pinon, which was released by Lionsgate. What he has been working on recently has been a bit of mystery... until now.

His new film is simply titled F (as in the grade) and it looks to be the latest endeavor in Britain's recent wave of what I'm now coining as "hooligan horror" (see Eden Lake). We have received a small synopsis from Roberts, but I can't help but wonder if it will be a revenge movie where a humiliated teacher exacts some justice and hands out fails to all of his rowdy pupils. That would be sweet.

Synopsis:

F is a terrifying thriller about a group of teachers trapped in …

Yet Another Writer Hired for Spider-Man 4

9 July 2009 6:58 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I'm not quite sure what's going on with Spider-Man 4 right now, but apparently the script is still being kicked around, and this week yet another new screenwriter has been brought in to have a crack at it. Columbia has hired Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, Big) to do a rewrite, who has previously worked with Tobey Maguire on a number of projects. Story details are still very much under wraps. This makes Ross the third major writer to join the project after James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and David Lindsay-Abaire (Inkheart) also wrote previous versions of the screenplay. For the moment it appears that Sam Raimi is not having a hand in writing the screenplay himself. So is this a reason to start worrying about the film? I don't think so. While too many rewrites can leave a movie nearly incoherent, this doesn't always have to be the case. Let's not forget …

Gary Ross is the Third Screenwriter Hired for Spider-Man 4

9 July 2009 3:13 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Sony is really going all out on this one. They've hired a third screenwriter to rewrite Spider-Man 4 once again. Back in 2007 it was announced that James Vanderbilt (The Rundown, Zodiac) was the very first writer to work on this script. Then it was announced last year that Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire (Robots, Inkheart) would work on it. Now it's Oscar nominated screenwriter Gary Ross responsible for Big, Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, and The Tale of Despereaux. He's a good writer and has a long-standing relationship with Tobey Maguire, which is a good thing, but will that work wonders here? This could be taken as bad news, but I'm trying to look on the bright side. Sony is just making sure they're getting a damn good script. They've got to recover from the bad taste that Spider-Man 3 left in everyone's mouth and they've got boatloads of cash to spend to …

Straight-to-DVD Movie Winds Up At No. 1 In Rental Stores

Ordinarily a movie that goes straight to video is regarded as being among the dregs of a studio's output, but last week, The Code, starring Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas, debuted at No. 1 on Home Media magazine's rental chart without ever seeing the light of a theater screen. In second place was Disney's Confessions of a Shopaholic, followed by Warner Bros.' Inkheart, which flopped in theaters. Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino, which held the top spot a week ago, fell to No. 4 this week. On the sales chart, Confessions was at the top, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, while Gran Torino slid to second place. …
