• Factual errors: The Park Ranger's uniform in the Grand Canyon kayak scene is incorrect. The uniform colors of green and gray are for a National Park Service ranger. The patch on his arm appears to be for the National Park Service, but is the incorrect patch for the service. Also the badge he wears is the badge of the U.S. Forest Service.
  
  
• Anachronisms: When Christopher kayaks under the railroad bridge, BNSF engines are pulling the train. BNSF did not exist until the merger of Burlington Northern and Santa Fe railroads in 1995.
  
  
• Anachronisms: When Chris is working at Burger King, the logo for the restaurant is a design that did not appear until 1999.
  
  

• Crew or equipment visible: During one of the scenes where Christopher is living near the Salton Sea and training, a portion of a bounce-board reflector can clearly be seen in the reflection of one of the windows of Hal Holbrook's vehicle, as Hal watches him from below.
  
  
• Anachronisms: The Oxfam logo, seen when Christopher donates the money from his college fund in 1990, is the current one, which was introduced during the 2000s.
  
  
• Anachronisms: In the night scene, with the Las Vegas strip in the background, the Stratosphere Tower can be seen on the right side of the screen. The scene takes place in the early 1990s; the Stratosphere was completed in 1996.

• Anachronisms: When Chris is viewing the buildings of downtown L.A., a Union Bank of California building is shown. Union Bank of California was formed in 1996, while the film depicts events from 1992.
  
  
• Anachronisms: When Chris catches a ride with a trucker, a yellow sticker in the windshield bearing the number "6" is visible. This is a CVSA inspection sticker that indicates the truck passed a safety inspection in 2006.

• Continuity: When Chris is explaining to Wayne that he wants to get away from society, he references his desire to get rid of his watch before heading into Alaska, but when Ron drops him off for the last time, Chris clearly has the watch on as his walks away from the truck.
  
  
• Continuity: When Chris leaves the "magic bus" to return to society, he looks back at the bus one last time and the bus door is clearly left wide open. After finding that he cannot cross the river and returns to the bus in the rain, he has to reach through a window to open the closed bus door, which he left open.
  
  
• Revealing mistakes: In the desert when Ron drops Chris off at his camp, Chris hops up onto the hood of Ron's truck. This happens almost immediately after they pull up. Chris should have burned his hands and legs on the hot metal of the hood of the truck, as the engine beneath would still be hot.
  
  
• Continuity: While Chris is learning how to run a combine, he is harvesting wheat. In a subsequent shot, the combine is being unloaded of corn.
