With That Evening Sun, first time writer/director Scott Teems has adapted a modern Southern story (I Hate To See That Evening Sun Go Down, by Tennessee writer William Gay) into a elegiac, quiet film with heart, rugged authenticity, and a stubborn mule of a central character, portrayed by veteran actor Hal Holbrook. Holbrook's revelation of a performance in Sean Penn's Into the Wild two years ago (for which he received his first Oscar nomination at the age of 82 - the oldest actor ever nominated) caught Teems' eye; as he said, 'We knew we'd found our Abner.' Abner Meecham is an 80-year-old widower whose only son has moved him from his farm in West Tennessee into an assisted living facility several hours away. It's hard to figure Hollywood out sometimes. Last week we had nothing outside of the last minute addition, Wednesday release of the Michael Jackson doc This is It and then this week is packed, albeit with a lot of smaller stuff and a pair of thrillers, but any weekend where I am posting five reviews is a pretty big week for movie releases. Let's check 'em out shall we?
The Fourth Kind Is it real? No. Is it any good? It's not bad and will likely be better for people going in knowing wholeheartedly it is fake, but then again, the filmmaker's attempts to convince you it's real may grate on you even more under those circumstances. It's hard to figure which side the general public will come down on this one and user comments should prove entertaining reads.

Taking Woodstock Directed by Ang Lee I've never been able to sit through more than a few minutes of Michael Wadleigh's revered documentary Woodstock. Every time it's on TV, I hope I'm going to catch some footage of Crosby Stills and Nash or Jimi Hendrix. Invariably, what I get is a (split) screenful of hippies partying on down in acres of mud. So, I was intrigued by the idea of Ang Lee making a comedy based on Elliot Tiber's 2007 memoir about his role in this seismic late 60s cultural event. And surely it had to be more fun than the Taiwanese director's downbeat spy yarn, Lust, Caution. Greek-American comedian Demetri Martin plays Elliot, artist interior designer and dutiful son of Russian-Jewish émigrés Sonia and Jake Teichberg (Imelda Staunton and Henry Goodman). While Terrance Zdunich has worked behind the scene on everything from "The Starship Troopers Chronicles" to Into The Wild, he really became a phenomenon unto himself in the last two years, when his collaboration with director Darren Lynn Bousman, Repo: The Genetic Opera, made its slow but inevitable move to the silver screen. Denver Film Festival announces full lineup

The only big film festival in my own backyard is back and it runs from November 12th through the 22nd. While it caters more to heavy run fest material and arthouse film, they do have some of the more interesting films playing this year:

Earlier this week I was introduced to a small genre of film that I didn't know existed - Southern Gothic. If you're unsure of what exactly that means, like I was at first, just check out this trailer and you'll completely understand. Russ from SlashFilm recently pointed out this trailer for That Evening Sun that stars Hal Holbrook, Ray McKinnon, and Mia Wasikowska (who plays Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland). It looks like Hal Holbrook can still deliver an oustanding performance. I was moved by his work in Into the Wild and it looks like this will be great thanks to him as well. Anyway, I've said enough, just watch this. It’s very rarely that we don’t have the volume cranked up to 11 on the Boxwish jukebox. Yes, we love listening to all the latest seven-inch records on the hit parade here at Boxwish HQ, a special favourite being music from the movies. From the likes of Forrest Gump to Juno, Rocky to Into the Wild we can’t get enough of stonking cinematic soundtracks and also their more overlooked cousin, the film score. And so we pricked up our ears at news of the winners and shakers at this year’s World Soundtrack Awards which closed the 36th Ghent International Film Festival on Saturday. Into the Wild soundtrack

2007 saw the release of Into the Wild, the movie based on Jon Krakauer's 1996 book chronicling Christopher McCandless' journey into the unknown. Marking Sean Penn's fourth directorial work, the soundtrack for the movie became Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder's first solo album. He wrote most of the songs appearing in the film while Michael Brook provided original music. Describing this soundtrack as "folky" is hardly a new discovery, but it is the first adjective that comes to mind after listening to the welling guitar sounds. At its worst the album reaches a monotonous quality only saved by Vedder's magnificent, touching interpretations. Although it was "Guaranteed" that won Vedder a Golden Globe for best original song and the celebratory, repetitive Indio cover "Hard Sun" was released as a single, it seems to be "Society", a Jerry Hannan -penned piece that stands at the emotional core of the movie. »
