Those who have both seen the movie and read the book say that one of the biggest differences between them is that the movie leaves out the Alice and Gretchen characters, makes Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio) single, and gives him a love interest in the form of a Middle Eastern woman named Aisha (Golshifteh Farahani).

He dies. No doubt about it. In the car scene where Ferris and Bassam are making a getaway, the terrorists fire a RPG at their car. The American helicopters then kill the terrorists. As they pull Ferris from the wreckage, he frantically screams for Bassam. As he recouperates in Qatar, he asks Hoffman what the plans are for Bassam's funeral. Hoffman replies by saying "I didn't know the man".
