Opening on Christmas Day is director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes. As I have said a few times, I saw the film and thought it was awesome. Great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved. Amazing chemistry between Jude Law and Downey Jr. A third act that doesn’t suck. Action scenes that sell why Sherlock Holmes is Sherlock Holmes. But more than anything, the film is just a lot of fun. Cannot recommend it enough.

British actress Keira Knightley reportedly has shed off her clothes in the name of art. According to reports, the Cecilia Tallis of "Atonement" has been secretly visiting London's Halcyon Gallery to be painted in the nude by the highly-regarded artist Mitch Griffiths.
"It's considered a great honor to be painted by Mitch. He is a highly respected nude painter and is painting as number of subjects for a new exhibition next year," an insider revealed. "He is delighted Keira decided to take part."
Keira Knightley herself will be seen portraying Lillian Palmer in "London Boulevard", a movie about a South London criminal who tries to give up the gangster life by becoming a handyman for a reclusive young actress. She will star opposite Colin Farrell, Ray Winstone, and Stephen Graham.

Tobey Maguire has just been linked to the role of Bilbo Baggins for "The Hobbit", but his camp was quick to come out with a denial. Responding to the circulating rumor was the 34-year-old's publicist Kelly Bush, who told Movieline the debunking statement. Steering clear of "no comment at this time", the rep insisted, "This is false!"
Speculation of the "Spider-Man 4" actor could be taking on the fantasy film's lead role was sparked by Latino Review (Lr). On Monday, December 14, the site came up with the scoop, mentioning "agency sources" have told Lr that the actor is "in the early stages of talks between CAA and the producers of The Hobbit."
Maguire himself has told Lr back in November during the promotion of his film "Brothers" that he would love to work with "The Hobbit" director Guillermo del Toro. When pressed further, the Red Pollard of "Seabiscuit" was quick to add,

With director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes getting released on Christmas Day, Warner Bros. has just released eight clips from the movie. While I always post whatever clips I’m given from the studios, I’m actually going to recommend not watching the clips. The reason is, the less you see from the movie, the more you’re going to enjoy it. When I went into the press screening last week, I had only seen the trailer, so I was able to watch the movie without knowing what was going to happen. I strongly recommend doing the same thing as Sherlock Holmes is an awesome, fun adventure that I think everyone is going to love.
As I said when I posted the 37 images a few days ago: Even though I love to nitpick movies, this is one of the rare films that I walked out completely satisfied. Great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved.

The Lovely Bones has finally made it into theaters — well, three theaters; it’s in limited release until Christmas. It opened strong, pulling in $116,000 for a per-screen average of just under $39,000. If the movie, an adaptation of Alice Sebold’s bestseller, holds up over the coming weeks, it’ll be thanks to the many, many fans of the novel, and to the legions of die-hard devotees of director Peter Jackson.

Top actress and Oscar winner Susan Sarandon has tipped Irish starlet Saoirse Ronan for an Oscar nomination for her lead role in 'The Lovely Bones.'
Sarandon, who also stars in the movie about a young girl looking down on her family after her murder, said that the movie had some standout performances.
"I definitely think Saoirse Ronan and Stanley Tucci (who plays the killer in the film) should be nominated," said Sarandon, who won her own Oscar for her role in film 'Dead Man Walking.'
Ronan and Sarandon attended the premier of 'Lovely Bones' in Sydney yesterday and the Irish actress said Sarandon (63), who plays her grandmother in the film, continued her motherly ways off screen.
"Susan did look after me," she said. “Just being around someone as experienced as that is great."
Ronan was born in New York and is the daughter of Irish actor Paul Ronan.

Since I’ve been at Screen Rant I’ve written about some odd films in many, many different genres. Sometimes I’ve written about films that tick the boxes in multiple genres and that on the surface at least appear to be quite odd. Well, it’s time to add another film to that list: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
Natalie Portman will take the lead role as love-longing zombie-eradicator Elizabeth Bennet in this big-screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith.
The plot of the film is pretty much what it says on the tin – it’s Jane Austin’s classic novel with a new zombie element grafted onto to it.
Portman will produce through her “HandsomeCharlie” production shingle along with Annette Savitch. In relation to the project, Savitch said:

While Warner Bros. released the final batch of images from Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes yesterday, due to being in London covering the Avatar premiere last night, I’m a bit late posting them. But while I may be a bit behind, I have another reason for posting the images today…I wanted to say what I thought about Sherlock Holmes as I saw the film and loved it. While I was nervous about Robert Downey Jr.’s accent, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Not only does he sound the part, he’s absolutely kick started the Holmes franchise and I would be shocked if they aren’t making a sequel as soon as possible.
Also, even though I love to nitpick movies, this is one of the rare films that I walked out completely satisfied. Great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved. Amazing chemistry between Jude Law and Downey Jr.

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan has vowed to avoid the celebrity party circuit to concentrate on her acting career - because she doesn't want to end up like other former child stars.
The 15 year old was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in 2007's Atonement and she went on to land a role in Peter Jackson's latest film The Lovely Bones, opposite Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz.
Ronan is convinced it's hard for young stars to stay grounded amid all the pressures of fame, but she's determined to steer clear of trouble and keep her name out of the gossip columns.
She tells the Los Angeles Times, "I don't think I would ever want fame like them (other child stars). I have to say, I think Miley Cyrus is still quite young. She's what? Seventeen? I think she's very brave for all that fame to be thrown at her so young. She's like another Britney Spears. I don't envy her at all - or any of those girls who get that much attention.
"I suppose we're different kinds of actors. I focus on my work. The stuff that comes afterward - the press and premieres - it's fine, it's fun... but what I really want to do is work on my acting."

I've been a busy movie warrior lately! Cramming for our deadline to vote for the Critics' Choice Awards (deadline -- Dec. 11th, Yikes!), I've been watching movies non-stop!
So without further adieu, here are my quick mini-movie reviews for "The Lovely Bones," "Invictus," "Nine," and "It's Complicated." I will post my full reviews for each film soon, but for now, here's the shorter, leaner version.
"The Lovely Bones"
Based on the popular novel by Alice Sebold, "The Lovely Bones" tells the story of Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan), a 14-year old who is raped and murdered and must protect and look after her family from the afterlife.
Peter Jackson ("Lord of the Rings" films) teamed up with his perennial writing partners, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyen, to adapt the touching and heartfelt text.

Delivering a screenplay of a novel with such scope and depth was undoubtedly a daunting task, and for the most part the scribes effectively communicated the emotional intricacies of Alice Sebold’s work (although fans of the book will find much of the third-act familial drama gone). This isn’t surprising, though, given the confines of page to screen time.
Peter Jackson delivers once again as a director (and turns in a Hitchcockian cameo as well): The film is one of visual eye-candy without the tour de force of his recent summer fare, and the careful restraint in which he handles the material is moving and conveys his astounding range as a filmmaker (no zombies gettin' chewed up with a lawnmower here). The Lovely Bones is heartfelt, certainly, without ever utilizing the ‘on the nose’ tear-jerker narrative gags with which we’ve all become familiar. Brian Eno‘s score,

He was joined by his costars including Saoirse Ronan, who has grown up so much since Atonement, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Christian Ashdale and Rose McIver. The movie has been a long time coming and has another week to go before it hits theaters December 11. Mark has been hard at work on The Other Guys with Will Ferrell for the past few months, but now it's time for some promotional work as a star of the film as well as half of one of our favorite newlywedded couples of 2009.

'The Lovely Bones,' starring Irish teen star Saoirse Ronan, had its world premiere in London last week at a benefit hosted by Prince Charles. Saoirse, 15, met the English prince in a receiving line with her co-stars, among them Susan Sarandon, and director Peter Jackson, and she’s certainly learned how to work a red carpet, judging by the many photos of her posing in stilettos and a designer dress for the paps.
Saoirse was full of praise for old pro Sarandon, who plays her grandmother in the hotly anticipated release of the film based on the best-selling Alice Sebold novel about a family coping in the aftermath of the horrific rape/murder of its young daughter.

My Fair Lady Finally Finds a Director: Shakespeare In Love’s John Madden

Have to admit, I'm a bit surprised that a remake of My Fair Lady has generated as much talk as it has in 2009, but that's what happens when a couple of very high profile names get attached. (And not to really knock it, especially if it sticks close to the original Pygmalion, as reportedly it will.) Legit attachments have included Stephen Daldry and Baz Luhrmann. Then it was Danny Boyle circling the project. He bounced away from it to do 127 Hours, and there's talk that part of the reason Boyle didn't do the film is because he couldn't interest Daniel Day-Lewis in the lead role. Then there was talk of Atonement's Joe Wright directing the film, but that turned out to be speculative poop, for the most part. Wright denied any involvement flat-out.

“What’s the most important thing in life?”
Don’t answer yet! Think about it very carefully first.
After all, it’s a pretty big question. In fact, do they come any bigger? Probably not and yet for a group of young girls growing up in 1934. The answer might be quite simple. A husband, security, money, a nice house, kids. All the basic things a young woman was told to aspire to back in the 30s.
However, for a group of girls being taught at a school by Miss G these are the very things to avoid.
The glamorous young teacher fills her diving lessons with instructions on rebellion, the wonders of travel, of becoming strong and independent. Have adventures and make sure you answer to nobody but yourself is her message. The group hang on her every word and head girl Di (Juno Temple) is especially hypnotised by her teachers’ charms.
