Thor writers to adapt vampire comic Damn Nation

15 December 2009 2:20 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

If It has fangs and feasts on haemoglobin, then Hollywood is interested in it.

And the latest vampire project to be raised from the crypt and put on the big screen is the Dark Horse Comics title Damn Nation (published as a three-issue miniseries in 2005 and then collected into a paperback).

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog says Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz - who scripted the film adaptation of Marvel's Thor comic book - are to pen the Damn Nation screenplay for Paramount. This is the first update we've had since the studio said back in March that it wanted to fast-track the project.

In the Damn Nation comic, written by Andrew Cosby (creator of Eureka) and inked by Jason Alexander, the United States' borders and ports are locked down against a terrible threat.

And, according to Dark Horse's own synopsis of the comic: "The barbed wire and …

Thor Writers to Adapt Futuristic Vampire Comic Book Damn Nation

15 December 2009 9:24 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It looks like Hollywood’s love for all-things-vampire isn’t going to die anytime soon.  THR’s Heat Vision Blog reports that writing partners Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (who penned Marvel’s upcoming superhero flick Thor) have now come on board to adapt the Dark Horse comic book Damn Nation for Paramount.  The 2005 comic, written by Andrew Cosby (creator of the show Eureka), tells the story of “a United States shut off from the world by concrete barricades and barbed wire - not because of what might get in, but what might get out. A vampire plague has spread from sea to shining sea, and when a small holdout of scientists trapped outside of Buffalo, N.Y. discover a cure, it’s up to a Special Ops team from the President’s current offices in London to go in and get it. Yet, not everyone in the world …

‘Monk’ Series Finale Promo

24 November 2009 8:13 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

After 7 years, 8 seasons and 123 episodes, Adrian Monk is finally going to close the case which started it all: who is behind the death of his beloved wife, Trudy. With the case also goes the series, Monk, but now is not the time to lament over what will be, as there are still two phobia-inducing episodes left. At least now we have a promo to go with it and possibly some clues as to who’s behind it the crime.

The penultimate episode, titled “Mr. Monk and the End” comes with a description so short that there’s no chance of giving anything away.

Monk is called to a crime at the location where he first heard the news of his wife’s murder and begins the most important investigation of his life.

Although, what the description doesn’t tell you is that this episode also includes more guest stars …

Web Series ‘Broken Toy’ Looks Promising

30 October 2009 8:59 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

There are a lot of independent film makers in the world and most of them never get a chance to have their materials shown to a wide audience. That is until the Internet and YouTube came along and completely changed the rules of the movie game. It used to be that if you were lucky enough to attend an entire film festival, then you could watch one or two short films or low budget films that were very good but no distributor wanted to pick up.

That is not the case anymore because student and indie film makers can just put their stuff up for streaming and downloading for cheap or free and allow viral marketing to take over. I’m not knocking big budget films, but with only a few exceptions many of them are all budget and no substance.

We get a lot of requests here at Screen …

Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Stargirl Join 'Smallville' This January

26 October 2009 12:00 AM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

There's been a lot of buzz about what's new on Smallville lately, ever since three members of the Justice Society have been cast.  Season nine has been hailed positively by fans so far, especially since we're seeing more and more comic book characters come to life.

First on our list today is Hawkman, and IGN TV reports that the role has been given to Stargate Sg-1 actor Michael Shanks.  He already has quite a background on sci-fi and action shows like Burn Notice and Eureka, which will allow him to fit in perfectly on Smallville.

Remote View: 'Eastwick' Moving At Its Own Pace

23 October 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

In the 1987 movie adaptation of John Updike's novel The Witches of Eastwick, the "little devil" Darryl Van Horne beds the three heroines in the first act.

In the television series airing on ABC (in Canada it broadcasts on A), we're five episodes in and Van Horne hasn't slept with anyone yet. But that's not for his lack of trying.

It makes sense that the television show, plotted over at least a season and maybe longer, would be paced differently. But that means we get much deeper into the lives of the three women: artist Roxie Torcoletti (Rebecca Romijn), journalist Joanna Frankel (Lindsay Price) and nurse Kat Gardener (Jaime Ray Newman).

These names are different than those of the characters from the film or the book, and that's because in the mythology of this series, the arrival of Darryl Van Horne is not the first time a strange, charismatic man …

Fear and Fathers: Josie Davis

11 October 2009 3:56 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Fear Itself, Mick Garris' noble but short-lived attempt to bring horror back to network television, has just hit DVD (read our review here). One person who will not be buying the DVD is actress Josie Davis' father. "My poor Dad was really bothered by it," she laughs.

Josie Davis, who has appeared in numerous TV shows like Beverly Hills 90210 and Titans, starred in one of the most intense Fear episodes, 'Family Man', where her sweet, Church-going husband trades bodies with a serial killer who targets families.

"My Dad will Not be getting the box set because he was utterly horrified by my episode," the striking actress laughs. "My husband gets killed in the beginning, and a serial killer takes over my husband's body and takes over my life! When he comes home one night, I'm his innocent wife and he rapes and kills me.

"I did 'Family Man' with Freddy V. …

"Eureka"'s Colin Ferguson and "Firefly"'s Sean Maher Set to Play Gay in "Timing"

30 September 2009 2:05 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Two of the hottest hunks in sci-fi would make an adorable (onscreen) couple.

What happens when Connor (Firefly's Sean Maher) has his marriage proposal to Jesse (Eureka's Colin Ferguson) interrupted by Jesse's heretofore-unknown seventeen-year-old son? That's the question Timing, a new film from Dalliance Films, will attempt to answer.

Keith Sweeney, a producer for Dalliance Films, a Charlotte, N.C. indie film company, spoke with AfterElton.com confirming that Timing is currently in development with pre-production scheduled to start in late winter/early spring. The budget is slated at approximately three million dollars.

Both Ferguson and Maher have signed letters of intent for the project, but offers won't officially be extended until later in the process with hopes that both actors' schedules will allow their participation to take place as planned.

It's not the first time either actor will have starred in roles of gay interest. Ferguson appeared …

SciFriday: Bear McCreary, The Not-So-Silent Genius

25 September 2009 12:19 AM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

Some people might have their iPod filled with Linkin Park, old Aerosmith, or even Perry Como. But not me (Ok, maybe a couple of them). The star of my iPod is Bear McCreary, and I'm certainly not ashamed of it. In fact, I'm so proud of it, I tell everyone I know, and now I'm telling you. Of the 1,031 songs currently on my iTunes playlist, 135 of them are composed by Bear McCreary. It includes music from "Battlestar Galactica," of course, but also "Caprica" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." And that's just what's on my iPod now ... he's also done music work for "Eureka" on Syfy, and the brand new NBC show "Trauma" that premieres Monday. I usually don't watch medical dramas, but I'm giving "Trauma" a shot ... why? Because it's Bear McCreary. Bear's music also has made its …

Review: Eastwick

24 September 2009 7:37 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Eastwick is an easy win for me, though if you read a lot of other reviews on the internets you'd think I was the only person that actually liked this show.  I don't actually believe such nonsense, and I think there's a strong audience out there just waiting for this kind of series.  So don't always believe what you read, take a chance, and give this show a watch (or at the very least a DVR) tonight, and see for yourself.  Or, you can read on to hear my reasons for watching it.

At its core, storytelling is about making a connection between the teller and the listeners (or viewers in this case). Stories are often told to build knowledge, teach lessons, relate history and past events in a common current setting, and most importantly of all to entertain.  Eastwick, for me, has every one of those elements and I …

Two New Clips from ABC’s ‘Eastwick’

23 September 2009 8:30 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Tonight marks a big night for ABC as the pilots for three new shows are on the menu. Between Modern Family, Cougar Town, and Eastwick, we can tell you which one we here at The Flickcast are most excited about.

Eastwick is essentially a episodic reboot of the John Updike novel, but better known as the 1987 film starring Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Cher about a coven of witches that unknowingly summon The Devil to their small town and individually become seduced by him.

Same premise here, but instead we get Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price (Lipstick Jungle), and Jamie Ray Newman (Eureka) with newcomer Paul Gross (Due South) as the three witches and The Devil, a.k.a. Darryl Van Horne. Overall, the show looks to be a fresh mix of both Desperate Housewives and Charmed.

Check out two brand new clips from tonight’s series premiere. In the first clip, …

'Eureka' - What Goes Around, Comes Around

21 September 2009 8:09 AM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

This article may contain spoilers. Jack (Colin Ferguson) is having a hell of a day. His daughter gets accepted into Harvard, his girlfriend gets her dream job and the North Pole moves to Eureka. Under other circumstances, these might be good things or even great things. But on this particular day, it's all bad news. As Jack succinctly put it, "So the laws of physics are in peril, my daughter's moving out, and the world's coming to an end." Zoe (Jordan Hinson) is only a junior in high school, but after succumbing to the pressure to apply for early admission to medical school, she miraculously gets in -- to Harvard. It's only 3,000 miles away from Eureka and her overly-protective father who thought he had another year to get used to the idea that she was going to college. Then Tess …

Eureka Season Finale: Observations and Discussion

20 September 2009 1:45 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The Eureka season finale has come and gone.  As always, it entertained while gripping us with the character developments they so aptly throw into the works while destroying the world.

Spoiler warning: There are spoilers in this reflection on the season finale of Eureka. If you’re a time traveling (ie: time-shifted viewer who likes the DVR/recording method of choice) let your eyeballs tread with caution after the page-break.

Things went as they usually do when something goes slightly awry in Eureka and all of known physics become threatened and the world as we know it becomes endangered.

Again, basic Eureka fun, with some interesting implied story lines for next season… or non-story lines.

But amongst the fret of threat, two, maybe three points were being addressed:

Zoe (Jordan Hinson) leaving for Harvard & Tess leaving for another job in Australia.

The episode ended with Sheriff Carter (Colin Ferguson) strongly …

Tiff: Samantha Morton Impresses With ‘The Unloved’

18 September 2009 2:45 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Samantha Morton, perhaps best known to North American audiences as Agatha, the sad eyed pre-cog in Steven Spielberg’s super science fiction thriller Minority Report or perhaps for her work as the mute girl in Woody Allen’s Sweet and Lowdown for which she was nominated for an Oscar, makes her directing debut with The Unloved an intensely personal film in which the actress draws on her past with an unflinching eye. To say Morton is courageous is an understatement, as the actress-director uses her past in group homes and foster homes, as a ward of Nottinghamshire Social Services, from infancy to eighteen, in this powerful film about a young girl obviously based on Morton. That she turned out as she did is a testament to her great strength of character.

Interview: Matt Frewer on 'Eureka', 'Alice' and Acting to the Max

17 September 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Canadian actor Matt Frewer is probably best known for portraying that icon of 1980s computer animation and music videos, Max Headroom. Headroom's jerks and stutters are but a small sample of this talented and versatile actor's work, though.

On the big screen Frewer's credits go back to Franc Roddam's The Lords of Discipline (1983) and include such diverse material as Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Frankie and Alice (with Halle Barry), Uwe Boll's Darfur and two films for director Zack Snyder: Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen.

Frewer has also portrayed Sherlock Holmes in several television movies and appeared in a long list of TV series. He was a regular on Doctor, Doctor, CBC’s Intelligence and Psi Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal (for which he also wrote a script). He has lent his distinctive voice to characters in animated adventures of The Incredible Hulk, …

Preview Clips: 'Eureka', 'Warehouse 13' Finales

17 September 2009 10:18 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

It's changeover time in the television schedules, which means that we have premieres to look forward to and season finales that will tease us for months to come.

In the case of Syfy, the top of the anticipation list includes the second season premiere of Sanctuary and the series premiere of Sgu: Stargate Universe (I've seen it and it's not your father's Stargate, but it's pretty cool). There are also season-ending episodes of Syfy's record breaking hit Warehouse 13 and Eureka and we have video previews of both. Click the Video tabs above to get a taste of what's to come.

Eureka is an offbeat, science fiction comedy-drama that is centered on the residents of a small town in the Pacific Northwest. Shrouded in secrecy, the picturesque hamlet is actually a community of geniuses assembled by the government to conduct top-secret research. Eureka 318 – What Comes Around Goes Around – Preview Clip

15 September 2009 8:29 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Eureka's third season finale is upon us this Friday, and it sounds like typical Eureka fun – squared. SyFy was good enough to send along an enticing little bit of video from the last new Eureka we'll see for a while, What Comes Around Goes Around, and we're going to share.  It's circle time folks.

For one, I'm happy Eureka is coming back next year.  I thought the shift to Friday was the mark of death.  Yeah, I realize it was Battlestar Galactica's time-slot, so in the SyFy-verse a shift to Friday shouldn't be looked upon as a death knell as it would be on one of the big four – call it a reflex.  Eureka is coming back, so no more sweat.  How strange is it that it is over already, though?  If SyFy picked up the big network practice of 20-plus episode seasons, I – for one – would not complain at all. …

'Eureka' - Have An Ice Day

13 September 2009 7:47 AM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

This review may contain spoilers. In a cozy welcome home episode, Taggart (Matt Frewer) was back escorting a never-ending gigantic icicle to Global Dynamics for testing. Along with him returned Zane (Niall Matter) who had been gone for a month helping Taggart secure the ice core. Fargo's (Neil Grayston) greeting of "The Ice Man Cometh" was never more apt and there were bear-hugs for everyone. Alas, Zane came back a little more cool in terms of attitude than Jo (Erica Cerra) was expecting and even Fargo noticed the difference, labeling Zane "The King of Cold." Also picking up on Zane's indifference towards Jo, Taggart was quick to step in, circle his quarry and tried to ascertain if Jo still had feelings for him. Unfortunately, his chivalry was a bit too delicate and he lost his prey …
