This Halloween, in case you're not up for the actual scares of a new Saw movie or Trick 'r Treat on DVD, you have Stan Helsing, a movie advertised as "from a producer of Scary Movie" and taking the basic concept of the Epic Movie/Date Movie franchise and applying it to horror villains. No, I'm not really sure how it's actually different from the Scary Movie movies. But maybe you can figure it out by watching the six clips from below, showing off some of the goofier scenes of the movie, and not necessarily the bloodier ones. The previews make it seem like the plot revolves around the arrival of a bunch of different famous horror villains (Jason, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, all the rest) but most of the clips focus around your average bar hijinks. I'm betting on the usual mixed bag of horror parodies, but with the movie »

By Scott Weinberg (reprinted from January 2009 -- Sundance Film Festival)
The spoof (aka broad parody) sub-genre is a schizophrenic beast. At its best, the spoof can treat you to something as sublime as Airplane!, as mindlessly amusing as the Scary Movie series, or as stunningly worthless as Epic Movie. But the spoof remains the comedy sub-genre for filmmakers who are also movie geeks. Basically, you need to have seen a lot of Airport movies to write Airplane!, and you need to have some solid experience with blaxploitation movies to produce something like Hollywood Shuffle, I'm Gonna Get You Sucka, or this newest arrival: The slightly overlong but consistently giggle-worthy Black Dynamite, which aims to do to Shaft and Superfly what The Naked Gun did to police procedurals.
And for the most part, the experiment works like a charm. What I found most appealing about Black Dynamite is that, while it »

Over the last decade, we've collected reviews for thousands of movies. Most films, even profoundly mediocre ones, can expect to receive at least cursory support from the pundits. However, once in a while, a film will take such a critical drubbing that further attention is warranted. That's where our Worst of the Worst list comes in. We've compiled a veritable cornucopia of dull, foolhardy, and outright terrible films, from legendary duds (Battlefield Earth) to chuckle-deficient comedies (Epic Movie), from hapless sequels (Basic Instinct 2) to scare-free would-be fright fests (Alone in the Dark). We've pored over the reviews to bring... »

This week has already brought us the end of an era as we heard that our beloved B.A. Baracus is no longer solely played by the bling-wearing, mohawk-sporting icon Mr. T. But luckily we've got another tough guy on the way who should sooth the sting with his satirical blaxploitation ways -- Michael Jai White's Black Dynamite -- "the smoothest, baddest mother to ever hit the big screen."
We haven't heard anything from the butt-kicker since we shared an exclusive clip of the man's fighting action, but now as the film gears up for its October 16 release (bumped from September 4), a new trailer has been posted over at Yahoo. No surprise -- it's all sorts of bad/awesome. There's kung-fu action, heroic steps to stop drug dealers, and some Arsenio Hall if you look close enough. Watching this trailer, I'm already hoping for B.D. to rip into »

Earlier this summer, 20th Century Fox had a very unfortunate leak of their blockbuster tentpole film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I was very apathetic at the time it happened and couldn’t care less that Fox thought they were losing money on the movie. All I cared about was that I got the watch the movie early, green screens and stunt wires be damned!
That’s when I found Screen Rant and thanks to its chief, Vic Holtreman, realized the error of my ways and repented, never to watch a downloaded pirated movie again (Thanks Vic!). I then found a new way to watch movies and it included a trip outside my local Walgreen’s to rent a $1 movie from Redbox. If you haven’t had a chance to rent from Redbox yet, give it a try. Those big, bright, red movie vending machines are becoming more prevalent than Starbucks and »

In a bold move, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently decided to place more rigid qualifications for its Best Original Song category. Academy voters will now rank songs and only those that average an 8.25 out of a scale of 6-to-10 will make the cut. If no songs average that score, then the Academy will skip the category for the year. Blame Three 6 Mafia. For the past few years (give or take "Once," which rightfully won two years back), the Oscars have missed the boat on best song nominations and often award ho-hum picks. Case in point: they left off Eddie Vedder for his stellar and inspiring work on "Into the Wild" in 2007, and last year omitted Bruce Springsteen's poignant title track for "The Wrestler." But, the issue over music and motion pictures goes far... »

Troma sounds a lot like trauma and without knowing how they came up with the name I can't but help think it's on purpose. After all they've spent more than thirty years making sure there was something to offend somebody in virtually every movie they've made. Maybe that's why Troma is still around thirty years later. They bring a smile to the face of anyone who likes seeing sacred cows splattered even if at the end you feel a little messy yourself.
Lloyd Kaufman has made a living out of being able to brand that particular sentiment even when Troma's movies have been truly awful. In fact at times the studio has been so well known because of it’s boob baring antics that it itself has threatened to become a bigger product than any of it's films. This despite there having been some real classics, movies that I would »

Keenen Ivory Wayans' nephew Damien makes his feature directorial debut with Dance Flick, the latest from a comedy factory even bigger and more confusing than Judd Apatow's. Let's see if I can get this straight. Keenen and his brother Damon Wayans started to break into showbiz in the early 1980s (apparently with some help from Eddie Murphy). Then Keenen wrote and directed the very funny blaxploitation spoof I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988), which featured roles for many of his siblings, plus one for a young Chris Rock. Then he created the terrific TV show "In Living Color" (1990), which, among its other accomplishments, boosted Jim Carrey's career. There were some other attempts at movies, most embarrassingly White Chicks (2004) and Little Man (2006), but their real bread and butter seemed to come from Sucka-like spoofs and parodies, starting with Scary Movie (2000).
I like that movie, and even its first two sequels have some memorable moments, »
