The Arcadian is an upcoming post-apocalyptic adventure that follows actor J. Larose (of Saw III, Saw IV, and Repo! The Genetic Opera fame) as an enigmatic warrior called "The Lighthouse Keeper" who goes on a quest for "revenge and redemption in a strange future world" we're told is "reminiscent of wild 1970s pop sci-fi."
Inspired in equal parts by samurai movies, rock operas, and underground comics, we're told that the visual world of The Arcadian will be an homage to the work of underground illustrators and be something quite unique due to the fact that it was shot entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II camera - chosen for its unparalleled low-light sensitivity.
The Arcadian has just wrapped principle photography and is heading into an intense round of post. It is due Q2, 2010.
To make up for the fact that we have no detailed plot synopsis yet, we've included a

Viggo Mortensen has consistently earned acclaim for his work in a wide range of films, including most recently Eastern Promises, A History of Violence and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. In 2008, he starred again with and was directed by Ed Harris in Appaloosa.
We sat down with him this past weekend to talk about his new movie, The Road, the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of the beloved, best-selling Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Cormac McCarthy, who also wrote No Country for Old Men. Mortensen leads an all-star cast featuring Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce and young newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee in this epic post-apocalyptic tale of the survival of a father (Mortensen) and his young son (Smit-McPhee) as they journey across a barren America that was destroyed by a mysterious cataclysm.
Directed by John Hillcoat, The Road is an adventure story, a horror story, a road movie and ultimately

The Big Names Circling Hillcoat's 'Wettest County'

Recently, I rejoiced about all of the upcoming projects that The Proposition and The Road director John Hillcoat's got brewing. But there's also another in turnaround that's getting new life. As The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Biz Blog reports, there's a whole slew of talent circling around the once-struggling The Wettest County in the World. Scarlett Johansson's name has been thrown around as well as one heck of a diverse mix of young male talent -- Ryan Gosling, Shia Labeouf, Michael Shannon, and Paul Dano.
Sorry, Shia, but I feel compelled to sing: "Which of these boys is not like the other?" If there's any chance of getting into one of those odd-man-out scenarios, this would be the one. i can't imagine they're all up for the same part (as there are 4 main gigs), but could he really compare to four actors who have proven themselves to be quite hardcore and skilled?

I'll say that at the time Jerry Maguire came out, I was a big fan of Renee Zellweger. I thought she was perfect in the movie and destined for a big career. And I guess in some ways I was right I'm just surprised that her career seems to be winding down. I can't remember a single decent Zellweger film since Cinderella Man (and even that is debatable). Appaloosa was pretty good but Renee's performance is better left not talked about.
So with all that, it's not surprising to hear that

Having made her dwindling fanbase suffer through "New in Town," "Appaloosa" and "Miss Potter," Renee Zellweger has received a gift from the movie gods: Working Title is developing a third "Bridget Jones" movie. The project is in the early stages, but Variety reports the project will probably be based on the 2005 weekly columns original author Helen Fiedling wrote where the forty-something Bridget attempts to have a baby before it's too late. According to the trade, Zellweger, whose biggest hit recently has been voicing a CG animated character in "Bee Movie, seems keen on returning to the unlucky in love British

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members.
"These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks."
The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's

“New in Town” is nothing new for Renee Zellweger and no, it has nothing to do with her much-needed return to the romantic comedy genre that launched her career. Unlike other stars who purposely make sure their films shoot as much as possible in New York or Los Angeles, it appears that Zellweger is a traveler. Her last four releases have sent her to Toronto (“Cinderella Man”), England (“Miss Potter”), South Carolina (“Leatherheads”), Austin, Texas (“Appaloosa”) and most recently, the sub zero temperatures of Winnipeg, Canada. (Yes, she shot “Case 39” in Vancouver somewhere in that mix, but it’s been on

It’s been a week since the nominations were announced for the 2009 Academy Awards and right on cue is today’s opening of the 17th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Fidm). This Los Angeles-based celebration of the best costumes in film traditionally follows in the wake of the Oscar noms and is a fantastic showcase for those vying for awards and those that have won during the previous year’s event. “This exhibit celebrates all aspects of costume design for the movies, whether they’re historical or contemporary, big and grand or small and independent,” enthuses the museum’s curator Kevin Jones. So, what clothing delights are on show this year?
Over 20 recent films will be exhibiting at the event which runs from today until 29th March, with their costumes, accessories and props all viewable to the public for free.

The Santa Barbara Film Festival is underway now, and amidst the screenings there is also a series of panels going on. Aint it Cool have had their man Quint on the scene, and he’s filed a report from the writers panel.
Moderated by Variety’s Ann Thompson, the remainder of the panel was made up of screenwriters: Dustin Lance Black, writer of Milk; Robert Knott, writer of Appaloosa; Tom McCarthy, writer-director of The Visitor; and Andrew Stanton, co-writer and director of Wall-e.
Quint managed to glean a few solid nuggets of news, not only from the panel but from a luncheon beforehand. We already knew a fair bit about Stanton’s plans, but here are the new bits and pieces:
- Yes, his John Carter will be a Civil War soldier. No fanbase-rattling updates into the modern day here. Presumably still a Johnny Reb - but that wasn’t

Appaloosa DVD Review

Recently Hollywood has seen a nostalgic resurgence in the western genre. 3:10 to Yuma was an excellent late entry and Open Range a worthy, under seen addition. But they stand alone in a vast plain of rolling tumbleweeds these days. Even “modern” favorites like Tombstone and Unforgiven were in the early 90s.
The latest western, Appaloosa, doesn’t belong in the same saloon as those films. In fact, I reckon if this movie were to mosey around those parts, we’d have an old fashioned shootin’ on our hands. As a western story, it’s average. As a movie, it’s just boring.
What you may have enjoyed about the traditional western is still present. Men of few words carrying out their law enforcement duties and face off against ruthless outlaw bandits. But in this case it is marred by a prominent love triangle that distracts its cowboys from doing much of anything.

The western genre is a tricky one for feature films nowadays. They used to be a dime a dozen, but it seems they went out of style for good after Clint Eastwood made the superb Unforgiven in 1992 and has yet to return to the genre. Kevin Costner made the stinker of a film in Wyatt Earp in 1994 but then redeemed himself in 2003 with the under-appreciated and under seen Open Range. Even those that want to point to Tombstone have to remember it was released in 1993 and another great western in The Proposition has been virtually ignored. Hell, despite being set in space Serenity was a fantastic western in 2005 and spaceships couldn't even get audiences into the seats. Nope, to make a western is to be all alone on the range with a camera, some dirt and hopefully a story compelling enough to make your money back on home video. Appaloosa

Appaloosa DVD Review -- Ben says Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen are the reason to watch this film

When sitting down to watch a western made in this decade, I typically hold all of them up to the standards of “Tombstone” or even “3:10 to Yuma.” I expect really dynamic character development and tons of gun fights in saloons with sassy bar maids and harlots ducking in the wings. Hollywood’s new found affinity to western films is a welcome resurgence of the genre. I loved “3:10 to Yuma” and “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” was one of my favorite films of last year. So where does “Appaloosa” stand with the greats of western film hierarchy? The film’s strengths are its two amazing leads Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen, but it starts to lose steam when a young damsel (Renee Zellweger) gets in the way, derailing the pace a bit. The plot follows two men, Everett Hitch (Mortensen) and Virgil Cole (Harris

Out January 12 in Region 2:
• Pineapple Express [buy at Amazon U.K.]. From my red light review:
I think it’s supposed to be funny, the idea of violent pot dealers, of warring gangs of weed pushers, but it probably helps to actually be stoned while watching this to appreciate that. In fact, I wonder if the writers -- Rogen, Judd Apatow, and Evan Goldberg -- were high themselves when they wrote this, because a major instance of cause and effect is reversed early in the film, not that there’s much a plot to start with, but it kind of ensures that nothing hangs together here, storywise. Also, they stole the bit with the police car from their own Superbad.
