The first of this episodic content is a mission set call "Lost and Damned"

"This new episode, available Feb. 17 via download exclusively for those who own the Xbox 360 version (, stars Johnny Klebitz, a member of Liberty City biker gang The Lost.

"Johnny is a very different character than Niko, with a very different background," says Dan Houser, vice president of creative development for Rockstar Games. "I can't go into too much detail on the story, because we try not to give away too much plot before the game is released. But I can say that the story will show you a different side of Liberty City."

The episode, titled The Lost and Damned, requires players to have the full version of the Mature-rated GTA IV (ages 17 and older) and an Xbox Live membership to download. It's likely to carry an M rating, too. (Parents can use the Xbox 360's parental controls to prevent children from accessing inappropriate content.)"

As regards to this content becoming available on the PS3, it's unlikely, especially if Microsoft are putting up money for this (which was reported as being $50,000,000 USD). Microsoft are trying to convince the audience that the XBOX 360 is the platform for GTA IV by securing this exclusive content. Microsoft have made a big deal that this content is exclusive to the 360, so it appears they have tied up a deal with Rockstar for it to remain that way. Rockstar have kept very quiet on with regards to the downloadable content, so we will have to wait and see. As it stands the only console which has been confirmed to receive the downloadable content is the XBOX 360.

Trailer 4: "Good Lord, What Are You Doing?" aka. "Everyone's a Rat" - "Real McCoy" by Movado

Trailer 5: The Greenskeepers - "Vagabond"

'UK Commercial' - "Get Innocuous" by the LCD Soundsystem

The answer is: none. You own an Xbox 360? Great! Got a PS3? Awesome! No matter what other users may tell you, no console version is superior than the other, or vice versa.

Both versions run at the same resolution, 720p. However the PS3 shows slightly less texture 'snap-in' due to the mandatory install. The PS3 will not have downloadable content in the same form as the 360 and this in itself will not be released until much later.

Liberty City, based on modern-day New York City.

However, being that this is a new start for the franchise (Vice City and San Andreas were considered extensions of GTA 3) the city has been completely re-vamped. Rockstar North has wiped the slate clean, shutting the book on the GTA3 trilogy and choosing to start anew. Gone are the days of zombie-like pedestrians, robotic law enforcement and stale surroundings. Liberty City has returned as the setting for Grand Theft Auto IV, but this isn't the Liberty City that we have embraced for over half a decade.

New York is still the basis, but it's bigger, grittier, and more brutal than ever. Four of the five boroughs - plus a portion of New Jersey - have been recreated from the bottom up in an attempt to truly nail the atmosphere of New York City. The Bronx has become Bohan, Brooklyn has become Broker, Manhattan has become Algonquin, and Queens has become Dukes. Staten Island has no counterpart in GTA IV, the reasoning from Rockstar being that it wouldn't be fun to play.)

Liberty City's resemblance to New York, N.Y. isn't limited to geographical locations, however. Many of the landmarks that exist in New York City are mirrored in GTA IV. The MetLife building - a major part of the Manhattan skyline - has been recreated as the GetaLife building. DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) exists in Liberty City as BOABO (Beneath the Offramp of the Algonquin Bridge Overpass). The Statue of Liberty - which wasn't present at all in GTA III - makes an appearance as the Statue of Happiness. Other notable landmarks of the New York skyline have been duplicated in GTA IV, including the Empire State building, Chrysler building, Flatiron, Roosevelt Island, Brooklyn Bridge, etc.

In order to fully embrace the culture and atmosphere of New York, Rockstar North has also made sure that the citizens of Liberty City echo those of New York City. The eccentric vagrants of New York coexist with smarmy executive-types. Foreigners try to find their way as tourists stumble through crowded intersections. Crooked businessmen strike deals with ruthless opportunists. Organized crime thrives as the Russian and Italian mafias clash with the likes of the Chinese Triads and Yakuza. The trafficking of drugs coincides with the smuggling of weapons. All of this is interwoven, giving Liberty City the authenticity of a modern-day New York City.

Dan Houser, the creative vice president of Rockstar Games had the following answer when asked why Liberty City was chosen for GTA IV:

"[New York City] is an environment we felt had never been done to the level we were envisioning it in a video game. From looking at all of the locations, this was the one that really stood out to us, and really had that impact. It has all of these iconic things that you couldn't put into a game before."

In another magazine article, Houser explained again with this:

"We've always wanted to do New York properly. With GTA III, we were dealing with so many technical issues and design issues about making a game like that, that we didn't really think that trying to make somewhere like a real place was important at the time and then we discovered later that that gave an added element of content to the place.

We've got a full time team of researchers and photographers in the office in New York who get emails from the artists in Scotland saying, "Hey can you find out what this building's like, or what the traffic flow's like around here?" or the designers want to find out how the law systems work. We wouldn't be as confident doing a next-gen game the way we wanted, somewhere we didn't have a base."

Where is Niko from?

It has been suggested that Niko grew up in either war-torn Bosnia in Yugoslavia, or Serbia. However, the true nationality of Niko is unambiguous, and it seems that Rockstar had intended for it to be so. Dan Houser said, 'Niko is a man with no country, just like how Claude is a man with no words.' The only clues given to the player as to where Niko is from is what he states at one point in the game, 'I'm not from Russia.' We know that he comes from Eastern Europe, that he speaks Serbian and that he isn't from Russia, but it seems that that is just about it.

GTA4 takes place in 2008. As such, there will be modern technology such as cell phones and the Internet playing roles in the gameplay.

GTA's famous mockery of fads pertaining to the timeline of the game will also be included. For example, in Star Junction (Times Square) a giant billboard can be seen advertising a TV show called "America's Next Top Hooker". The same show is advertised on the TV and in radio stations.

The protagonist of GTA IV is Niko Bellic - (Bell-ik) - a tough 30 year old Eastern European war veteran who is convinced by his cousin, Roman, to come to Liberty City.

Can Niko Swim?

Yes. Just not underwater.

GTA4 is making a significant leap from the previous titles in the series. The developers are comparing it to the jump from GTA2 to GTA3.

Gameplay

* Niko can use a mobile phone to receive calls and phone his contacts. He can also use it to call taxis and purchase weapons. The options presented on the phone's LCD are Phonebook, Messages, Organizer, and Camera. The phone is also used to enter cheat codes.

* Pedestrians smoke cigarettes, read books and newspapers, drop litter, talk on mobile phones, walk in and out of buildings, and generally act like any normal pedestrian would.

* It is possible to climb exterior fire escapes.

* There are many different animation sets for breaking into cars. One of these involves Niko smashing the side window with his elbow, climbing into the car, and then hot wiring it.

* Niko can check his current balance at ATMs.

* GTA IV features multiplayer, but it's "not a massively multiplayer game," according to Rockstar's creative vice president Dan Houser.

* Cracks exist on a car's windscreen after being shot at. They no longer shatter unrealistically like in previous GTA games.

* It is possible to surf the internet in GTA4 via internet cafés. It is available from any computer in the game, and provides a hub for all sorts of interactivity within Liberty City.

* In GTA IV, you will gain a police wanted level for any crime that you commit, providing there are witnesses present. The police can only chase you if they know where you are, and they need to see you to know where you are, so if you escape the search area marked on the radar without being spotted, your wanted level will disappear.

*The Police themselves have also been massively updated, they use AI to track you by sight. If they cannot see you, they will look for you until you are out of the Search Area. They behave more like real police and will respond to different crimes with different force. They will also work together, find cover and attempt to bring you down without harming innocent citizens.

* Liberty City's taxicabs provide an easy (and legal) way of travelling around the city. Inside the taxi, the camera changes to first-person mode. For convenience, you can "trip-skip" to the destination you choose.

Story & Missions

* The story and mission structure is different from previous GTA games, in that the story can be told in a number of different ways. Rockstar are trying to give people greater freedom and sense of control over their destiny. You now have a lot more choice in what you want to do.

* It is possible to do more than one mission at a time. For example, some missions take place over several days and may involve waiting for phone calls or attending interviews, and you are free to carry out other business during the waiting period.

Technology

* Grand Theft Auto 4 runs on Rockstar's proprietary next generation game engine, R.A.G.E., allowing for an unprecedented level of realism and interactivity.

* New sunlight and weather effects which give the city a whole different appearance as the time of day progresses.

* Volumetric lighting effects allow sunlight to stream realistically into dusty interiors. Police spotlights will likely benefit from this effect as well when helicopters kick up debris.

* Normal (bump) maps will provide much more detail in models than the underlying polygons, as well as giving materials more texture and depth.

* Road and building textures are more varied than in previous GTAs. On some roads you will find potholes, metal plates (etc) where the road has been dug up.

* Modern pixel shaders give water, glass, cars, etc.. more realistic reflections and shininess than the earlier games.

* In cars, you can see real reflections on the rear and side-view mirrors.

* There are no load times in GTA4, not even during exterior-interior transitions (and vice versa.)

* GTA4 uses euphoria, a fully procedural animation package created by NaturalMotion. Find out more about euphoria at the bottom of this page.

* Variations in the terrain are met with realistic changes in the walking animation.

* Characters will react realistically to being hit with gunfire, cars, and melee weapons or fists.

* Players will be able to push people out of the way, rather than "floating" past them as in older games.

* Falling/thrown characters will react as in real life- They won't simply be limp, lifeless ragdolls. Nor will they use a canned "super hero" animation like before.

* You will be able to hang on to helicopters and trucks, which will swing them around as the vehicle moves. However, you usually fall off after a short time.

Miscellaneous

* The camera angle behind the car is closer than it has been in previous GTAs. This allows you to see more detail on the cars, and more of the verticality of the city.

* In terms of scale, GTA IV is smaller than GTA: San Andreas, but the scale is much more accurate, since there is no desert or countryside in Liberty City. Liberty City in GTA4 is the biggest single city Rockstar have ever created.

More about euphoria...

To begin, NaturalMotion's euphoria engine is not a graphics engine. Several sources have claimed euphoria to be a graphics engine, which would power Grand Theft Auto IV. This is an incorrect statement. A graphics engine, commonly known as a game engine, is reponsible for creating real-time graphics for a game. NaturalMotion's euphoria engine is not so much concerned with rendering real-time graphics, as opposed to creating interactive animations for the game. The core technology is the Dynamic Motion Synthesis (DMS) system.

Provided enough processing power, such as in a next-generation console (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360), DMS is able to produce dynamic animations for in-game objects. One aspect of this, the DMS behaviors, simulates the responses of a human body to changes in its surroundings. This means that the animations you see taking place have not been pre-scripted or motion captured, as was the case in previous GTA games, but are generated on the fly. So for instance the same interaction with a pedestrian, repeated a dozen times, will produce a different outcome every time.

This technology is aimed to provide gamers with "unique game moments". Animations are created on the fly, so each player's experience will be unique. This brings Grand Theft Auto into a new world, since gamers are no longer subjected to pre-recorded animations; the game unfolds in a different way each time it is played.

This video showcases some of what the Euphoria engine is capable of:

Apart from Ricky Gervais,Katt Williams and various members of "The Opie and Anthony Show", nobody has been announced and nobody is immediately recognizable in the trailers. Of couse we still have the voice of Lazlow Jones, a popular radio jockey from the previous GTA games.

Unfortunately, this is not a staple of the series they are capitalizing on for this installment, there are no famous voices in the game. However this not a downside as having each character with his/her voice actor makes the experience unique as you don't have a famous face stuck in your head every time you hear a character in the game speak. This makes it easier to relate to the characters as their own.

There will be a huge array of vehicles on offer in GTA IV. Yet there will be several vehicles taken out.

Planes will not return, as the setting of Grand Theft Auto IV is entirely a city (a brand new Liberty City) and you won't need planes to fly from A to B (not only that, it's just unrealistic). Read: no one flies from JFK International to Newark International in real life. Helicopters will return, including helicopters that are armed. Speculation states that planes are not to be included in IV because of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks as Liberty city is based on New york city, however, this is unlikely as a reason.

Military tanks have been said to not return, and there is yet no evidence to suggest a return. Even the presence of the army in GTA IV is debatable. Speculation on this dictates that Homeland Security will replace the army, which in previous GTA titles was made to pursue you, if you attained a six-star wanted level.

Bicycles will not be making an appearance, despite one having been seen in a screenshot (users suggested that it was merely part of the environment).

Simple answer, no.

You see GTA IV is a new beginning for the franchise, or a "re-start". Much like Casino Royale was a "re-start" to the James Bond franchise or Batman Begins was a "re-start" to the Batman franchise.

GTA III series consisted of : GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and the 2 "Stories" spin-offs.

This is why the game is called Grand Theft Auto IV and not GTA: Liberty City.

Grand Theft Auto IV is it's own "universe" sperate from the GTA III "universe". However, there are references to places like Vice City, San Andreas, Los Santos, etc.. There is also a couple of subtle nods, such as being able to wear the clothing from the guy in GTA III.

There are many references to the GTA universe as a whole, it would not be GTA wihtout them. But GTA IV is it's own series not connected to any of the previous ones and should be viewed as an all "new" GTA.
