Small 'Gears of War' Movie Update

We have to be on the cusp of a great era of video game movies. I simply can't believe that with all the mistakes that have been made over the years, and with all the upcoming projects in the genre, things finally have to turn around. They just have to. Halo is still out there, Warcraft has Sam Raimi's attention, Call of Duty has had its name copyrighted for future movie use (it's a start), and then there's Gears of War.
This started going down the same road of a lot of its predecessors; Brett Ratner was attached to direct at one point, and who wants that? But it's kind of turned around, in my mind, at least, with the hiring of director Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard). But we're still a while away from seeing this in theaters, part of a wave of big movie adaptations of video games.

Concept Art: Looking Glass Wars

I’ve come across some concept art made by concept illustrator Stephan Martiniere back in 2006 for the proposed Looking Glass Wars movie which looks pretty cool. Although these are from a few years back, Stephen has them filed under “Live Action Feature Films” on his official website. The designs look extremely similar to characters from the early ’90s Sunday morning cartoon King Arthur and The Knights of Justice, which Martiniere worked on as a character designer. The Looking Glass Wars is a trilogy of novels (also the title of the first in the series) written by former skier turned filmmaker/actor Frank Beddor, and is basically an action heavy re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic novels Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass. The proposed film is being produced by Charles Roven (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight) and is one of numerous fantasy films he has lined up,

Pitt Enters ‘Dark Void’ of Video Game Movies

Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company and India-based conglomerate Reliance Big Pictures have signed a deal with Capcom to bring Dark Void to the screen. The feature is being considering a “starring vehicle” for Pitt and — like everything else — a potential franchise.
Lukewarm responses to game adaptations haven’t seem to deter businesses from spending big bucks on video game movies. Activision is quietly working on a “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2″ movie, “Guitar Hero,” and a Sam Raimi-directed “Warcraft” epic.
“Dark Void,” which isn’t out until January 2010, centers on a pilot named Will who crashes into the Bermuda Triangle. The plummet takes him to an alternate universe where humans battle aliens with advanced technology. Gameplay will mix land and mid-air confrontations through the use of jetpacks. Judging from the poster and the video below, this looks like The Rocketeer meets Iron Man, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Spider-Man 4 Finally Gets Its Villain

Well folks, no need to wonder any longer. Spider-Man 4 director Sam Raimi has reportedly decided on at least one villain to throw at Spider-Man.
Completely blowing out of the water the numerous villains whose names had been tossed around to be Spider-Man’s potential nemesis in the fourth film, Raimi is going with Black Cat as the foe in Spider-Man 4.
While Black Cat was certainly not one of the names that came up in speculation about the movie’s villain, the choice is anything but random.
Raimi follows a strict rule when it comes to choosing his villains: the character can’t just be a threat to Spider-Man, but also has to somehow be linked to Peter Parker’s life. Black Cat fits this rule perfectly.
In the Spider-Man comic series, Black Cat is the cat burglar alter ego of Felicia Hardy, who at one time was Peter

It’s been a big week for Sony’s Columbia Pictures and fans of the Spider-Man franchise. A mere week ago we found that the studio has selected Gary Ross to direct and rewrite the upcoming Venom solo film. Ross has a long history with the studio and actor Tobey Maguire and he’s currently involved with the script of Spider-Man 4. While we later heard that Venom might be far off with Ross also being tipped to helm the Spielberg-less Matt Helm remake, there’s no slowing the Spidey franchise one way or another.
On the Peter Parker side of things, Raimi revealed a few days back that they’re planning for an early March start of production for Spider-Man 4 to meet their summer kick-off release date in 2011. That’s not all however, as more recently we reported on director Sam Raimi discussing the possible villains of Spider-Man 4.

Since its announcement, there has been tons of buzz surrounding the Warcraft film. Warcraft: Rise of the Lich King has already been put under the reigns of Sam Raimi (Spider-Man franchise, Drag Me to Hell) as it tells the story of Arthas, the young paladin prince who would be corrupted by an evil sword and ultimately become the ruler of the undead legions of Azaroth.
Speaking with MTV News, Raimi said “We want to be really faithful to the game…to the Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the game, and the archetypes that the game presents… I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as much accuracy and authenticity as possible.”

The news that Sam Raimi would be helming the game movie of all game movies, Warcraft was met with both squeals of joy, and stunned silence by the movie blogosphere. But now that it's had a little time to sink in, people seem to be really looking forward to it. Some might even wish he'd do a last minute duck out of Spider-Man 4. But at least the wait is broken up by a bit of news, and that's Raimi announcing his screenwriter. MTV and Variety both report that Robert Rodat is set to pen Warcraft for Raimi and Warner Bros.
"We want to be really faithful to the game," Raimi told MTV. "We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a World of WarCraft adventure. Only obviously it's very different 'cause it's expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture.

If you've never heard of World of Warcraft, then you're probably living in a deserted cave, underneath a rock, and without an internet connection (in fact, how are you reading this?). WoW holds the Guinness World Record as the most popular Mmorpg (massively multiplayer online role-playing game), with approximately 11.5 million monthly subscribers. Because of its popularity, it's no wonder that WoW is soon headed to the big screen.
Director Sam Raimi, famous for his Evil Dead and Spider-Man films, is currently in pre-production on the WoW movie. He told MTV that rumors about the film being based on the Arthas: Rise of the Lich King novel are false.
We would choose ... something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it. But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters.

MTV reports that Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat has been hired to pen the script for Sam Raimi's World Of Warcraft film.
Raimi said in an interview with MTV, "We want to be really faithful to the game. We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a 'World of Warcraft' adventure. Only obviously it's very different because it's expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture."
The film, simply titled Warcraft, is based on the popular video game franchise and the studio and Raimi understand that since the game already has millions of worldwide subscribers, the film has huge potential to become a franchise, something which Raimi is already quite familiar with. Although the World Of Warcraft following does mean the film has the enormous potential to hoover the box office, it also means that fans

Sam Raimi's upcoming movie based on World of Warcraft has taken a significant step forward.
The Spider-Man director tells MTV that Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat will be handling the script for the movie.
Raimi adds that, contrary to previous rumors, the movie will be an original work based on the role-playing game's universe, and not an adaptation of the book Arthas: Rise of the Lich King.
The director explains,

Sam Raimi has dropped the name of Warcraft's screenwriter in an interview with MTV. Robert Rodat, who wrote Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot, is the guy who'll be wrangling the Horde and the Alliance. Why Rodat? Clearly the pitfalls of the game-to-film adaptation are not lost on the director, and he wants to make certain of a rock-solid starting point. "I've never made a video game movie," says Raimi, "but my approach would be to work with the best character writer I can find, which in this case is Robert Rodat, and tell a great character story." Contrary to some previous reports, the film's plot will be original, and won't be based on any of the Warcraft novelisations. It's a way away yet though, as Raimi has the small matter of Spider-Man 4 to contend with in the meantime.

Coming Soon just passed us a note saying Sam Raimi, who directed all three Spiderman movies, confessed to MTV that Robert Rodat is set to write the forthcoming Warcraft movie. Having written Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot, Rodat is no stranger to scripts that are heavy on combat.
Raimi had this to say to MTV:
“We want to be really faithful to the game…We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a ‘World of WarCraft’ adventure. Only obviously it’s very different ’cause it’s expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture.“
And some of this!
“We would choose… something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it. But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters.“

A week ago, NewsinFilm ran a story about a title change to the Warcraft movie on IMDb that included the subtitle “Rise of the Lich King.” The details were based on rumor and speculation, but were labeled as such and gave us an opportunity to look at a possible storyline. Other websites (Warcraft and movie alike) are feigning the high ground, but keep in mind they have all run unfounded articles in the past. Ok, now that that’s out of the way, here is the latest from Sam Raimi’s camp:
In a phone interview about today’s DVD release of Drag Me to Hell, MTV had the chance to talk with Raimi, who is directing the live-action fantasy epic for Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros., and Blizzard Entertainment.

A few days ago there was a rumor floating around that the World of Warcraft film, to be directed by Sam Raimi, would be called Rise of the Lich King and be based off one of the WoW spin-off novels. That was based on the fact that the IMDb listing had changed to reflect that title, and we never ran it for exactly that reason. Anyone can add to and change the IMDb, so it's not to be trusted. Now, however, we know that the script will be an original story, and we know who's writing it.
MTV reports that Saving Private Ryan screenwriter Robert Rodat will write the movie, currently being referred to as simply Warcraft. Raimi says,

Back in July, many a geek found themselves on the tip of a double-edged sword. “Spider-Man” director Sam Raimi was signed to direct the live adaptation of the world’s most popular online gaming phenomenon – World of Warcraft.
Personally I thought it was a good fit, however there was more than one disparaging comment about the choice. Well now I do firmly believe that the nerds of the world can sleep easy, as the project now has “Saving Private Ryan” scribe, Robert Rodat hacking away at the tricky script!
According to the director, the story will be an entirely original tale, encompassing the far-reaching polygon world and it’s characters. Speaking to MTV, Raimi commented:
“We would choose… something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it. But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters.”

Now this is some nerd news right up my alley: Sam Raimi, the director of the Spiderman films and Army of Darkness, has hired Robert Rodat, the writer of Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot, to draft his World of Warcraft film. On IMDb, it’s simply being called Warcraft, which seems to work just as well.
There’s a lot to root for with this project. Raimi is incredibly talented, and seeing him return to a fantasy/horror genre is great news — he’s the man who got me into film in the first place with The Evil Dead. The fact that he’s taken up Warcraft is even better: it’s a videogame property that allows him the breathing room to have a little fun without treading on the toes of Lord of the Rings. The franchise is his oyster, and I can think of a hundred ways
