Variety reports that Bradley Cooper (The Midnight Meat Train) has signed on to star in Relativity Media's suspense thriller Dark Fields . Neil Burger, director of The Illusionist is onboard to helm the project from a script by Leslie Dixon based on the novel by Alan Glynn. Dark Fields is described as a what-if story about a designer drug that can make you rich and powerful. Eddie (Cooper) is a down-and-out New York writer until he possesses a pill that gives him the ability to access the full capacity of his brain. He soon realizes that his newfound intelligence and success come at a hefty price as mysterious forces begin to pursue him. A slow-roll platform release is a high-risk strategy, but Paramount has really hit on something with Paranormal Activity. The movie expanded from 30 to 160 screens this weekend, accompanied by good reviews and hype that Paramount marketers almost killed themselves building on the internet, and was greeted with a $44,000 per-screen average, amounting to a fairly eye-popping $7 million weekend. It wouldn't have worked if the movie weren't pretty good, and the momentum is sure to fade as the movie expands further, but still: kudos all around. It would have been easy to dump this little gem into a few theaters and let it die (see: The Midnight Meat Train.)
The weekend's only new wide release, Couples Retreat, capitalized on its cast and bright-colored marketing to the tune of $35 million -- a strong October bow, and par for the course for Vince Vaughn, who can open a rom-com like nobody's business. Chris Rock's »

With Paranormal Activity performing well and Eli Roth's Cotton going into production soon, it looks as if Blair Witch inspired films are still hotter than ever (shocking considering it's been 10 years already). Bloody Disgusting got exclusive word on a new horror film in development over at Lionsgate entitled The Vatican Tapes. From a screenplay by Chris Borrelli, a tape is leaked from the Vatican that displays an exorcism that goes horribly wrong. It's said to take on attributes from Blair Witch and Rec. Gary Lucchesi (the Underworld franchise, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Pathology, The Midnight Meat Train) is producing. »

This past weekend, Joel Schumacher's latest genre offering Blood Creek was quietly released into a handful of second run theaters by Lionsgate, similar to their treatment of last year's The Midnight Meat Train . (Which is a shame, because Blood Creek is actually pretty good!) Although it'll be tough to catch, at the very least, below you'll find this pretty bad-ass theatrical one-sheet poster for the flick. The chiller (formally known as Creek ), stars Dominic Purcell ( The Gravedancers ), Henry Cavill and Michael Fassbender and was scripted by Dave Kajganich ( The Invasion , the upcoming theatrical version of Stephen King's It ). Synopsis: In 1936, the Wollners - a German family living in rural Town Creek, Maryland - are contacted by the Third Reich to host a... »

Fango got a tip from our writer Chris Poggiali that a movie called Blood Creek opened today at discount theaters in assorted U.S. cities. We did a little digging around and confirmed our suspicions: the film is a retitling of Joel Schumacher’s Creek, originally filmed as Town Creek.
Whatever the title, the movie, scripted by David Kajganich, stars Dominic Purcell and Henry Cavill as brothers who run afoul of Nazi occult experiments dating back to the 1930s. Produced by Gold Circle, the film is being “released” by Lionsgate in much the same manner it did The Midnight Meat Train last year, relegating it to dollar cinemas outside of the top markets. (So far, we’ve tracked it down in Dallas, Nashville, Phoenix, Orlando, Memphis, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids, Mi and Rochester, NY.) We imagine a DVD release announcement will follow shortly, and will keep you posted on any updates. »

Oh so quietly, and unbeknown to us, Lionsgate is releasing Joel Schumacher's Blood Creek , formerly known as Creek , into theaters today. Yes, today. The chiller, starring Dominic Purcell, Henry Cavill and Michael Fassbender, is debuting in Memphis, Dallas, Orlando and a handful of other cities, says The Bloodshot Eye. And, akin to what Lionsgate pulled on The Midnight Meat Train last year, it's being dumped into second run theaters. Creek has been listed on Lionsgate's press site for months now under "coming soon," however, a quick glance over there now yields little answers - the title has simply been removed from the upcoming slate. Sad news for a film I've heard is a decent revenge story steeped in Nazi occult craziness. It was produced under the old... »

What Cole Abaius wants, Cole Abaius gets. Luckily that's not even remotely true otherwise Reject HQ (and perhaps the world) would be over-run with mimes, lime Jell-o, and men in short pants. But it seems he has gotten at least one wish in the past couple days. Just yesterday he posted a list of 10 Stephen King Stories That Should Be Films, and while we have to forgive his ignorance in listing "The Cat From Hell" which we all know already hit the big screen as part of Tales From The Darkside: The Movie, the rest of his choices are pretty solid. And just a day later comes word that one of his suggestions is already in pre-production. Dread Central reports that Ryuhei Kitamura (The Midnight Meat Train) is attached to direct King's "Home Delivery" from a script by John and Paul Buckholts. The official synopsis of the short story: Maddie Pace is a young, pregnant »

One upcoming comic book-movie adaptation that we haven't had any news of lately is an adaptation of the Top Cow title Magdalena. But thanks to MTV, we just got an update from the screenwriter herself.
The movie already has a cast, a writer, and a director. Magdalena chronicles the adventures of a direct descendant of Mary Magdalene named Patience, who protects the world against evil using a variety of supernatural powers. Writing the script is Holly Brix (The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations) and set to direct is Japanese filmmaker Ryûhei Kitamura, who made his Us debut with The Midnight Meat Train. Set to star as Patience is Step Up actress Jenna Dewan, along with Luke Goss as her mentor, Kristof.
Even though Brix hasn't officially begun writing the script, here's her take on how the movie will go:
Obviously, I read all the comics and we talked about different versions of the story, »

"Men Who Stare at Goats," the new George Clooney and Ewan McGregor film about psychic soldiers, kicked off a flurry of commentary on Twitter this week, and at least one producer out there loves Jeff Bridges' role.
There's been a lot of real-life drama sweeping through the Twitter-Wood feed as well this week, including Ted Kennedy's death and memorial service and the wildfires in Los Angeles that have forced thousands of residents out of their upscale L.A. neighborhoods. Shannon Elizabeth caught a shot of the fires from her living room window, which you can find below. It's all there along with Miley Cyrus and a factoid you likely never knew about Clive Barker in the Twitter-Wood report for August 28, 2009.

It wasn't long after I became a critic that I realized how the month of August tended to collect bad movies, like dust. Every year, the studios roll the dice on stupid-sounding ideas and come up, surprisingly enough, with stupid movies. They know it and we know it, but they have to try to get their money back anyway, so these movies get released, and they generally get released in August. I could go back and list dozens of examples -- Ok, here's one example: Gigli, in August of 2003 -- but suffice to say that the last of the eagerly anticipated blockbusters opens in July and then the junk opens in August, clearing the way for awards season in the last four months of the year.
Now, last summer in my humble opinion was one of the best movie summers of my life, starting with Iron Man and powering through things like The Dark Knight, »

Horror baron Clive Barker, who first introduced the world to "Hellraiser" has a new project set up for television, and two up-and-coming writers from the "Saw" series will be paving the way. "Clive Barker's Hotel" still has a veil of secrecy around its premise, but the writer behind "The Midnight Meat Train" worked with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton previously when they penned a draft for Dimension's (now held) "Hellraiser" remake. This time, it looks as though they have sold their idea to Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Television purchased "Hotel," according to the Risky Biz blog. Barker is reportedly attached to produce the potential TV series about a haunted hotel with Barker's other previous collaborator Joe Daley. McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision, which produced "Supernatural" for The CW, may also be interested in producing the property.
Dunstan and Melton, who together won the first season of the reality show "Project Greenlight, »

The lines between celebrities and fans get thrown out the window in many cases at Comic-Con, and posts in the Twitter-Wood feed over the last few days have offered some great insight into who's gushing over whom. Today, Kevin Smith gets sappy about Neil Gaiman, Tyrese gets starry eyed about Jim Lee, and the "Twilight" crew was just happy to show up. I plucked a few pictures and tweets to illustrate.
Comic-Con International is only halfway over, though, and plenty more celebs are just now arriving at the party. "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau and Robert Rodriguez can be counted among them. Shoot on down below, and you'll catch details from them, Tom Felton's bizarre encounter at his car, and Wil Wheaton's candid take on Hollywood folks on the show floor. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for July 24, 2009.

After taking a never-ending train ride from Croton-on-the-Hudson, NY, my buddy and I finally arrived in Montreal, rushed back to his place via the metro to drop off our bags at his apartment and sped off to Théàtre Hall Concordia just in time to catch Fantasia’s 9:45 p.m. screening of Dread, the latest film adaptation from Clive Barker’s Books Of Blood. Coincidentally, I had just recently reread my three-volume American collection of Barker’s excellent and groundbreaking short stories, and so I entered the theater with “Dread” fresh in my mind.
First-time writer-director Anthony Diblasi has worked on Barker projects before, having executive-produced The Plague (also second-unit director), Book Of Blood and The Midnight Meat Train, and with Dread he has taken the core of the source material and expanded upon, altered and rearranged it—to a mixed but overall positive result. The setup is simple: Three »

From Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Pictures, who’ve brought us such movies like Armageddon, Punisher: War Zone and The Incredible Hulk, along with Platinum Studios bring us yet another comic book adaptation. The folks of Top Cow Productions team up with these two to bring the mystical action/drama Magdalena to the big screen.
Set to already write the film is Holly Brix who penned The Butterfly Effect 3. Along for the ride is Ryuhei Kitamura, who directed Versus, Sky High and The Midnight Meat Train to name a few, who will jump into the director’s chair once again.
“Both Kitamura and Brix bring very unique visions to ‘ Magdalena ,’” said Hurd. “Kitamura’s visual style coupled with Brix imaginative narrative will truly make ‘ Magdalena ’ a compelling film on screen” added Hurd.
“We have wanted to work with Kitamura for some time and his appetite for the material is infectious, »

When it comes to the world of Clive Barker, filmmaker Anthony Diblasi is already well versed. He served as one of the executive producers on both The Midnight Meat Train and Book Of Blood, has recently adapted a script for another Book Of Blood short story Pig Blood Blues, and made his directorial debut with the upcoming Dread, which he also wrote. Now, word comes from Fantasia (via Fangoria) that Diblasi is tackling another Clive Barker adaptation, The Damnation Game. At the film fest, word came out that the writer was currently prepping a script for Damnation Game for Phoenix Pictures. No word on if he'll direct, but it's still a whiles off so we'll keep you posted.
Dread was written & directed by Anthony Diblasi and stars Jackson Rathbone (Twilight, S. Darko), Shaun Evans, Hanne Steen, Laura Donnelly, Jonathan Readwin, Carl McCrystal, Zoe Stollery, Eva Wyrwal, Elissa Dowling, Kirean Murphy, »
