What happens when you put together Wet Hot' director David Wain with a
talented cast including Paul Rudd, Jessica Alba and Winona Ryder?
Apparently the worst flick of the year. The problem with this comedy is
that there's very little comedic about it. Ten stories: each one
vaguely (and I mean VAGUELY) related to one of the Ten Commandments.
Paul Rudd narrates, introducing each story in what are the most
embarrassingly dull sequences in the entire film. It's him ranting and
rambling, arguing with Famke Janssen, making out with Jessica Alba...
his scenes range from mind numbingly boring to nervewrackingly
annoying. As for the ten stories themselves, well, there's a few
chuckles here and there. That's about it. And there are a few jokes
that are so stale and outdated, that I can't believe David Wain
directed this. The ending exposition at the end of Honor Thy Mother and
Father is a great example. Without giving anything away, there's a joke
at the end there that left me completely baffled and thinking, "Wow,
that joke hasn't been funny for, like, 10 years." What a waste of 10
bucks.

There were some good ideas for the sketches but it seems like the
writers couldn't figure out how to develop them. The result is
something you might see at a high school production with a single
sight-gag or punchline stretched to fit the allotted time. It's not
that the gag is bad or stupid (though sometime it is) - it's just that
you can't fill 10 minutes of dead time with one joke.
There are a couple of funnier commandments that got more than half a
laugh. Winona Ryder is a scream - she of course is in the sketch about
the do not steal commandment. (See how clever that is - this movie is
full of them...) Unfortunately, the funnier sketches are at the end of
the movie and you have to sit through an hour to get there.
This reminds me a lot of SNL - the current incarnation - not the
"classic" incarnations. If you watch SNL you'll probably like this. If
you find SNL an interminable bore, like I do - then avoid...

It has been so long since I've had the urge to walk out on a film...
but I stayed through this one just to see the credits. I wanted to
really make sure that people I had had great respect for in previous
incarnations had made this piece of trash. Unfortunately they had.
Half the theater walked out while I was watching, however. More power
to them.
I am an atheist, yet I found this religiously offensive. I am a
liberal, yet I found this politically offensive. I am an independent
film lover, but I found this cinematicly offensive. There were a few
laughs, to be sure, but most of what the creators thought was funny I
wish they had kept to themselves.

This literally reminds me of skits put together at summer camp. The
stories are so ridiculous, it's as if they were written by people who
didn't realize they'd ever actually make it to a big screen.
But alas here they are, with some decent production values to boot.
This is a technically well-made movie. Good directing and
cinematography -- nothing B-movie or low-budget about it. Well, about
its looks, anyway.
Where this movie really "shines" though, is in the acting. Not only did
this movie somehow attract a fair amount of A-list talent, but these
actors really gave of it, considering the material they were handed.
Extra points go to Winona Ryder, who was an especially good sport,
shoving her tongue into the mouth of a wooden puppet and all.
Basically my 7 score is based on the fact that I had at least a smile
on throughout most of this movie. Seeing all these big names, all
perfectly willing to "lower" themselves to the level of this material,
just really renewed my faith in humanity.

This film had a good premise with a load of good actors. How did it not
come out great? I believe this film just entered into the "Envy"
status.
Don't get me wrong there a few laughs (see Liev Screiber's phone call)
But no where near enough to cover the patchy and downright stupid
storyline. Why was Paul Rudd's story taking place in the TV studio in
which he was filming a program? Surely thats not allowed.
This film lacks smarts and doesn't make up for it with all out laughs.
The film could of been the next Anchorman or even Dodgeball but due to
story getting lost somewhere and a couple of stories which were just
stupid (see last story and story with the rhino) I think what sums this
film up is the last scene you'll know what I'm talking about when you
see it.
I had high expectations and was let down, thoroughly.

I had middling expectations for what I expected to be a clever comedy
spoofing the 10 commandments, but this movie fell flat on its ass
within the first 10 seconds of Paul Rudd's painfully wooden narrative.
This movie was took all of my goodwill and sympathy (aka. stored-up
pity laughs) for the "fresh, unconventional indie film with a small
budget", kicked it in the groin, smacked it over the head with a rusty
shovel, and left it by the side of the road to die. A *horrifically*
bad attempt at satire on a subject so ripe for parody the phrase
"shooting fish in a barrel" comes to mind.
The only bright spots were Liev Schreiber (with impressive comedic
timing) and perhaps Winona Ryder's vignette. I have no idea why Famke
Janssen was even cast.
To sum up; It was rubbish. The acting sucked. The script sucked. The
jokes bombed. It wasn't clever or witty at all. Barely watchable.

After having viewed this stinker, I can say 'Renter beware!' The jacket
indicated a positive 'Thumbs Up' from the TV reviewers. What a mislead.
I recall really laughing only once and can't pinpoint what scene
sparked that laugh. I think it arose in the skit around the 4th
commandment
Many scenes were less funny than uncomfortable, The first commandment
stretch went on far too long. On a parachuting excursion with friends,
an excited guy jumps without his chute, survives his free fall but
buries his lower body in the earth from which he can't be extricated
without death and somehow inspires people, has a TV show, enjoys
adulation and is abandoned as fickle world moves on. Anything funny?
No!
We all break the commandments. We're human. Sometimes what we do can be
amusing, laughable, poignant, sad. What THE TEN captures is when our
sins are stupid or abasing of self and others. I guess that captures
SIN well, but it's not side-splitting comedy.

improv comedy without the stage, audience or laughs, 18 August 2008

The fun of improvisational comedy (as made famous by Second City, the
Improv Olympics, The Lemmings, etc) is the seat-of-the-pants
inventiveness of performing live, in front of an audience. In the live
format, the jokes are always appreciated because they are (or at least,
have the appearance of being) unscripted and spontaneous.
On film though, there is obviously no live audience and zero
spontaneity. Without these elements, you've lost 2/3 of your
three-legged stool. And that's why "The Ten" falls.
Looking for good sketch comedy moved to the stage? Any Monty Python
picture will work. The Kids in the Hall's very sketchy, very
loosey-goosey "Brain Candy " (1996) serves up better laughs and mayhem
than "The Ten". I suppose you could even look to "Animal House" and
"Caddyshack" for a flavor of sketch comedy on screen.
