Parents Guide for
Marley & Me (2008) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

No nudity.

There are three scenes where the couple start having sex in a hotel room, but nothing is shown. As the camera tilts up to the ceiling, rhythmically squeaking bed springs are heard.

The main character and his boss discuss his attempt to get his wife pregnant. Sexual innuendos are passed back and forth in this scene and throughout the movie.

Jennifer Aniston calls Owen Wilson and says, "There's a naked woman in your bed," referring to herself. His reply is, "Oh great. Well, why don't the two of you get started, and I'll be there shortly."

There is a scene where the wife, with her back to the camera, takes off her dress and jumps into the pool. (You can almost see the side of her breasts.)

A baby penis is briefly seen.

Marley is seen repeatedly humping people and furniture (most notably, the obedience school trainer.)

Violence & Gore

A teenage girl calls for help and says that she was stabbed in her driveway. A little bit of blood is seen, but not much. She is trembling and crying pretty hard.

Profanity

At least 2 utterances of the "s" word, 6 craps, a few hells, and a couple of S.O.B and Hells.

Marley starts dying near the end and is eventually put to sleep. The movie ends with the husband looking back on his memory. You will probably have the last scenes of Marley being put to sleep, the children crying over Marley, Marley getting buried, and John's flashback. The last few scenes are very sad and many will cry. Especially ones who have lost a dog in the past, or might soon.

The main character and his friend discuss the possibility of divorce. The best friend encourages splitting up to gain back freedom.

Many of the real-world issues confronting women with careers trying to balance work and family life were played out very realistically in this movie. The main character's wife has a heated, intense argument with the main character about constant house work, screaming children, and a husband who works a lot and does not understand what it is like to stay home with the children seven days a week.

The couple is seen in the ob/gyn office, looking for the heartbeat of the baby at ten weeks. The empty sac was shown on screen and the technician left the room and brought back the doctor. The doctor confirmed that there was no heartbeat. The couple went home and all the emotions of a mother losing her child were played out on the screen. It was implied they did not have marital relations for three months. At a bed and breakfast the wife states that the idea that no one had sex in that bedroom for over fifty years was "really turning her on" and she felt that she and her husband have waited long enough.
