‘The Karate Kid’ Trailer Goes Online

17 hours ago | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

I defy you to find an 80’s child who doesn’t recognize it when someone poses for the “Crane Kick.” The move was made legendary when it was used to win the “All Valley Karate Championship” at the end of 1984’s The Karate Kid. The film was the beginning of a franchise that became an institution for tons of teens during that decade, and now they’ve gone and remade it.

The reboot stars Jackie Chan as “Mr. Han” and Jaden Smith (The Day the Earth Stood Still and Will Smith’s son), as “Dre Parker.” It’s an updated story that takes the setting from Southern California to Beijing. Mr. Han will be teaching Dre karate (or maybe it will be kung-fu – most American audiences don’t know the difference) and putting him through workouts that might strain Jean Claude van Damme.

The movie also features Taraji P. Henson »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

19 hours ago | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: 12 Months of Toilet Plunkers and Dumpster Diamonds!

19 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

‘The Karate Kid’ Trailer

22 December 2009 1:27 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Well I’ll be. A remake of The Karate Kid starring Will Smith’s son and directed by the guy who delivered us The Pink Panther 2 looks … good. Or at least, not as much of an abomination as many expected.

Watch the trailer below and see for yourself. Obviously, this is the wrong setting for karate, but it’s good to see Jackie Chan in a role that might actually have him doing something.

The Karate Kid hits theaters on June 11, 2010.

From the official press release:

“In Columbia PicturesThe Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could’ve been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother’s (Taraji P. People Magazine has published the first official photos from Will Smith-produced remake of “The Karate Kid“. It features Jaden Smith as Dre Parker and Jackie Chan as Mr. Han.

Dre is a skateboarding video game buff who moves to China after his single mother is forced to go there for work. Unable to speak Chinese, Dre finds it hard to settle in, and gets beat up by the local bully. Mr. Han (Chan) is a maintenance man who spots his black-eye and offers to teach him both martial arts and Chinese, so he can defend against the students at the nearby school of kung-fu.

First Photos from The Karate Kid Remake Starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith

1 December 2009 3:24 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Like everyone, I think I have a certain amount of morbid curiosity about Will Smith's upcoming remake of The Karate Kid. Something about the project just feels wrong, and even though I want to be open-minded about it, the original film is just so iconic and irreplaceable that I don't know how to reconcile that. I suppose I have no reason to believe that this will be absolutely terrible... well, except for the fact that it's directed by the same guy who did The Pink Panther 2! I was also really annoyed by Jaden Smith in The Day the Earth Stood Still, but I haven't seen The Pursuit of Happyness which did get a lot of solid reviews. Then there's Jackie Chan, whose upcoming film The Spy Next Door looks like a new low in his career. These photos are nice enough I suppose, but... are they really training »

Johnny Hallyday Says Tarantino is Writing a Script For Him, Has Had a Meeting With The Coens

25 November 2009 7:19 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

There is a story in the new print edition of Paris Match in which "The French Elvis", Johnny Hallyday seeks to dispel recent rumours about his ill health and ease the French public's concerns over one of their living national treasures. As well as promising we've far from seen the last of him yet, Hallyday goes on to tease some potential big screen appearances for the future. Hallyday, if you don't know, is a real pop culture icon in the French speaking world. He's been dragging out the same farewell tour for over two years now, seemingly refusing to let the spotlight dim. He's also appeared in a number of films both rather good (The Man on the Train), bad (Detective) and ugly (The Pink Panther 2). The most exciting piece of Hallyday's new interview is his claim that Quentin Tarantino is currently writing a script with a role set aside just for him. »

The studio with the famous lion logo and library of James Bond films appears to be headed for the auction block to recoup some $3.7bn in debt

The MGM lion, a star of cinema since the 1920s, may be looking for a new home amid rumours that the studio is to be sold off in the Hollywood equivalent of a fire sale. Reportedly saddled with debts totalling $3.7bn (£2.2bn), the company looks likely to sell its MGM and United Artists libraries to the highest bidder in the next few weeks.

Variety suggests that the studio's film archive, which includes the lucrative James Bond adventures, may be snapped up by a major company such as Time-Warner. The famous logo featuring Leo the lion could well be auctioned off separately. Either way, it appears that the heyday of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is officially over.

Founded in 1924, MGM operated under the motto "Ars Gratia Artis »
