Blu-ray review: ‘Extract’ is Mike Judge’s most mature work yet

If you’re expecting Mike Judge’s latest comedy Extract to act as a direct follow-up to the 1999 cult classic Office Space, then you’ll be sorely disappointed. Extract is a different animal only existing in the same genus with his past works with, not only Office Space, but his underrated satirical look at Western civilization in 2006’s Idiocracy. Extract appears to be Judge’s most mature work to date. Instead of easily taking the partisan side of the “working man/stiff/tool,” he looks at work from the eyes of the evil overseer of American enslavement: the boss.
While not as superficially funny as the writer/director’s previous, Extract features much more textured characters that are just as morally, oh, how should I say this, “complex.” This ensemble comedy centers on Joel (Jason Bateman) who owns and operates Reynolds Extract, a bottler of vanilla, root beer and other

The Most Subversive Performances of 2009

In his 1966 essay entitled "The Subverters," Manny Farber hoped "for a new award at the year's end: Most Subversive Actor." His complete film criticism, "Farber On Film," was published this year, and in his honor I'm submitting a list of five nominees for this wished-for fake trophy. But his definition of "subversive" is a tricky one -- at the beginning of the essay, he describes the "subversive nature of the medium: the flash-bomb vitality that one scene, actor, or technician injects across the grain of a film."
For Farber, movies are complex mechanisms built upon the collision of artistic temperaments, not monoliths that can be encapsulated in a single theme, performance or mood. So he focuses on the small, telling details that exist on the outskirts of the plot, thrilling to actors who "can ply around the edges, trying to budge a huge, flabby movie script". It's the marvel of

'Did You Hear About the Morgans?' review 2 (1.5/5) - A by-the-romantic-comedy-book bore.

So did you hear about the Morgans? If not, consider yourself lucky. If so, and you were thinking of seeing the film, let’s warn you away, shall we?
Did You Hear About The Morgans? is a by-the-romantic-comedy-book bore. The Morgans (Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker) are a married but separated couple who have dinner one night and while on a walk, witness a murder. They are forced into the Witness Relocation Program and in turn, forced to spend time with each other.
It has an intriguing and somewhat unique enough premise, or at least one that should have made it stand out from other romantic comedies. But once the creators had the initial idea, they let laziness set in. They went with all the elements a romantic comedy has to have. You start with the initial casting of a Sarah Jessica Parker and a Hugh Grant. You make sure they bicker.

'The Hangover' Arrives On Home Video To Golden Globe Noms And An Increasingly Busy Cast

Before "The Hangover" became one of the biggest success stories of 2009, it was just a Warner Bros. comedy starring that guy who cheats from "He's Just Not That Into You," the dude from "The Office," and some short, fat guy with a beard.
Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis weren't putting all their eggs in one basket, because I'm fairly certain none of them expected "The Hangover" to gross over $459 million in the worldwide box office. In fact, the stars of "The Hangover" have been some of the busiest guys around Hollywood over the past year. Here's a look at what else they've been up to since "The Hangover" hit theaters in June -- beyond, of course, preparing for 2011's "The Hangover 2."
Bradley Cooper
Though Bradley Cooper surprised audiences and critics with his comedic chops in "The Hangover," he chose not to return to the bro-comedy formula. Cooper's

Review: ‘Brothers’ is emotional and powerful

What if your husband, a captain in Afghanistan, dies during a mission and leaves you alone with two daughters? What if his good-for-nothing brother steps up and proves himself to be worthier than you thought? What if something starts developing between you and that brother, when your husband suddenly comes back, miraculously alive? That is what the movie “Brothers” and the 2004 Danish film on which it’s based ask. Sam (Tobey Maguire) and Grace (Natalie Portman) are happy. He is a captain in the army; she stays at home taking care of their two daughters. Sam’s younger brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a drifting young man who went to prison for robbing a woman. Tommy is a constant disappointment to his family, and particularly his dad, a retired, alcoholic officer who wishes him to be “more like his brother”. When Sam is captured and made prisoner in Afghanistan, the

The Vicious Kind Movie Trailer and Clip

Here's a little indie starring Adam Scott, J.K. Simmons, and I guess I should continue, Brittany Snow, that a growing number of people are on the lookout for. Entitled The Vicious Kind and executive produced by sometime-gangster Neil Labute, the film sees the irreverent, dry-witted Scott in a more serious role compared to those in Step Brothers and the addictive Starz series Party Down. (That said, fans of Party Down witnessed a glowing coal rock of dramatic potential during the actor's debut season.)
The movie recently nabbed two Independent Spirit Awards, one for Best Screenplay, and one for Scott's performance, placing him---with some surprise---alongside other notable noms/Oscar locks Jeff Bridges and Colin Firth. Find out what Vicious is about and watch Simmons commit attempted murder in the encouraging, amusing, if hipster-hirsute trailer below.
Official Synopsis: "A redemption tale focused on Caleb Sinclaire (Scott), a bitter construction worker whose life

Adam Scott Is Surprised He Got That Indie Spirit Nomination, Too

When the nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards were announced a few days ago, some of the names people expected to see in the Best Actor (like Michael Stuhlbarg for A Serious Man or Hal Holbrook for That Evening Sun) were left off the list, replaced instead by a name no one saw coming: Adam Scott, for playing an erudite misanthrope in Lee Toland Krieger's The Vicious Kind. Don't worry, though -- as Scott told Movieline, he's just as surprised as you are.
After playing roles in The Aviator, Step Brothers, and Tell Me You Love Me, the 36-year-old actor's had a great run of late. In addition to The Vicious Kind (which debuts this Friday), he's got the lead on the much buzzed-about comedy Party Down, and he also happens to figure into a popular Funny or Die short that premiered just last week. Is Adam Scott having a moment?

You'll know her as Will Ferrell’s hot, constantly-in-denial therapist in Step Brothers, but it seems that Andrea Savage’s funny bone extends to her hands as well as her cheeks. As well as joining Zach Galifianakis, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd in Dinner For Schmucks – Jay Roach’s modern redo of the 1998 French film The Dinner Game – Savage has signed up to write a comedy script for Castle Rock Entertainment focusing on five female friends who try to have a nice weekend away in Santa Fe.And just to add to the “new Tina Fey” buzz, she’s also writing a half-hour pilot script for 20th Century Fox TV based on an idea she pitched and in which she should take the starring role. Any money on a new 30 Rock?

First Kevin goes and gets engaged, showing that his world no longer revolves around his brothers. Now, younger brother Nick Jonas is taking a step on his own as well.
At least for a little while.
The youngest of the brothers in the band The Jonas Brothers (the boys have another brother that isn’t in the band, but does have a role on the Disney Channel show Jonas), Nick is ready to move on to a side project with band the Administration.
Seventeen-year-old Jonas began recording with the Administration, a quartet based out of Nashville, this past spring, and will be touring with the band for the month of January.
The tour comes in preparation for the February release of the band’s album Who I Am. It also follows on the heels of the band’s debut performance on December 2nd on CBS’s Grammy Nominations Concert Live!

Will Ferrell Is Hollywood's Most Overpaid Actor

Just five years ago, The Frat Pack brought back the R-rated comedy and were the kings of mainstream comedy. Movies like Old School, Anchorman, and Wedding Crashers killed at the box office, and the biggest cog in the machinewas SNL-alum Will Ferrell. Since then, the group kind of petered out, with Judd Apatow's gang taking the reins, and while Ferrell has continued to have big hits (both Step Brothers and Blades of Glory made more than $100 million), his price tag is not worth what it used to be.
Forbes has printed a list of Hollywood's most overpaid actors, using a salary to returns ratio, and have determined that Ferrell tops the list, drawing only $3.29 for each dollar he was paid. His statistics were most harmed by the performance of both Semi-Pro and this past summer's Land of the Lost, neither of which earned more than $50 million. Second on

Will Ferrell, Ewan McGregor Top List of Most Overpaid Actors

Will Ferrell and Ewan McGregor on Wednesday headed a Forbes.com list of Hollywood’s most overpaid stars when looking at the financial returns of their movies.
Ferrell tops the list of stars who cost more than their movies do, taking in one dollar for every $3.29 his films make. According to Forbes, “Land of the Lost” cost an estimated $US100 million to make but earned just $US65 million at box offices worldwide for movie studio Universal Pictures. The movie followed a disappointing $US43 million box office for Ferrell’s 2008 outing “Semi-Pro“, and $US128 million for “Step Brothers.”
No. 2 on the overpaid actors list is Ewan McGregor (I Love You Phillip Morris, Angels & Demons, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Amelia), who made a slew of poorly performing movies after playing Obi-Wan Kenobi four years ago in “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.” McGregor’s films earned $3.75 per dollar he was paid.

Casting Tidbits Activate! First up, THR reports that Zach Galifianakis is continuing his hot hiring streak, but this time only his voice will be needed as he's entered negotiations to provide the voice for Humpty Dumpty in the Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots at DreamWorks Animation. He joins Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek in a story about the events leading up to the feline assassin's first meeting with Shrek in the second installment of the DreamWorks franchise. Chris Miller (Shrek the Third) will be directing from Tom Wheeler's script, but I'm hoping that there's still some remnants of Brian Lynch's earlier draft of the script.

On Tuesday we brought you the news that Helen Mirren had signed up to star alongside Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman in Red, Robert Schwentke's big screen adaptation of the DC Comics book series. Now there are two more names coming out of the woodwork - John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) and Mary-Louise Parker (The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford) are apparently in talks to join the cast.
The film is about a retired CIA agent (Willis) who has to contend with younger, more high-tech assassins who show up to kill him because of the classified information he knows. According to Heat Vision, Reilly would play another retired CIA agent who is paranoid that everyone is out to kill him, while Parker would play a federal pension worker and Wilis' love interest.

Sigourney Weaver and John C. Reilly Face the Rapids

Want to know why Sigourney Weaver has the comedic ability to do a great job in movies like Ghostbusters or Galaxy Quest? Or why John C. Reilly cracked you up so darn well in Step Brothers?
Take a look at Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm or the highly underappreciated Criminal. These guys have the acting chops to pull off drama effortlessly, and like the best comedic actors, have an understanding of every bit of the craft.
This is why I’m so excited for Miguel Arteta’s (Youth in Revolt) new film Cedar Rapids, which has added Weaver and Reilly to the cast alongside Alia Shawkat, The Office’s Ed Helms, and Anne Heche.
Rapids, developed by Helms and Phil Johnston (Flightless Birds), the film will “center on a wholesome and naive small-town Wisconsin man (Helms) who, when his role model dies, must represent his company at a regional insurance conference in Cedar Rapids,

If you'll pardon the pun, Will Ferrell's movie career has become a
decidedly hit or miss proposition. He still churns out successes like
2008's Step Brothers, but he also stars in duds like that same year's
Semi-Pro.
Plop 2009's Land of the Lost in the "bomb" category. Given its huge
budget and summer blockbuster expectations, Lost definitely
disappointed. $49 million isn't total disaster territory, but it's far
below the levels achieved by the average summer hit.
I like Ferrell, so I hope he rebounds soon. A loose remake of the 1970s Sid and Marty Krofft TV series, Lost introduces us to paleontologist Dr. Rick Marshall (Ferrell). He advocates the existence of time warps and touts them as a solution to energy problems.
His peers view him as a crackpot, but it turns out that Marshall's tachyon amplifier actually works. Down on his luck, Rick doesn't believe in himself of his invention,

Fresh off the set in New York come a slew of photos of Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson from the upcoming Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg buddy-cop comedy, The Other Guys. Those familiar with Johnson’s film repertoire might be surprised to find that there is not single tutu, fairy costume or alien child associated with this latest role.
The film is a collaboration between Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) and Chris Henchy. The pair recently worked with Henchy writing and McKay producing this summers Land of the Lost.
Set in New York City, The Other Guys follows Detective Allen Gamble (Ferrell), a forensic accountant who’s more interested in paperwork than hitting the streets, and Detective Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg), who has been stuck with Allen as his partner ever since an embarrassing public incident with his quick trigger finger. Allen and Terry idolize the city’s top cops,
