- The name of the bully in the playground is Chris Gardocki, which is the same name as a NFL punter who played for the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
- Mary Steenburgen played Will Ferrell's step mother in the Christmas film Elf (2003). In this film Mary plays Will's actual mother.
- Director Adam McKay states on the commentary that they originally went to the island of Catalina for location searches and discovered that he did not really like the island. They instead shot on the coast and during several shots, the island of Catalina can be seen. McKay chose not to have it digitally edited out as a joke.
- When Will Ferrell mentions that he has smoked pot with Sloan Kettering, he is referencing a lyric from the song "A-Punk" by Vampire Weekend, which was playing during the opening scene.

- SPOILER: The song that Will Ferrell's character (Brennan Huff) sings during the Catalina Wine Mixer, "Por Ti Volare", can also be heard as the first song that Jon Heder's character (Jimmy MacElroy) skates to at the beginning of Blades of Glory (2007) while wearing the Peacock outfit. Ferrell was also in Blades of Glory as Chazz Michael Michaels. As a matter of fact, Ferrell is actually singing "Por Ti Volare" and John C. Reilly is actually playing drums.
