I found this used and grabbed it, being that it looked interesting, and it was. The box art said something about "if David Lynch directed The Evil Dead" and for once, I found something that seems fairly accurate.
Joe Melton (Nathaniel Kiwi) has just moved to an isolated house in the isolated community of Miranda Falls, and it's almost Christmas. But odd things are happening, and he unwittingly has moved into an area where the dead are coming back to life in messy and disgusting ways. Why? Can't say, really....but that kind of takes a back seat to the horrifying visuals.
To say this is surreal doesn't really say enough. The look and feel of the film is great, but as for the why and the how, I can't really say, except it seems to have something to do with a man who left his family years ago to go to the US to become a famous producer of commercials. And now this man has come back when he's been notified his family has been murdered.
Now, Ed Melton, after originally being thought to be the one committing these gruesome murders, hooks up with Kylie, a young lady who works the counter at the local general store, and convinces her that something extremely weird & creepy is going on, and she even captures it on film. Senior Sargent Geoff Harding becomes involved, while struggling with his own demons and trying to stay away from the bottle, but he's eventually convinced that something's afoot.
A very unique viewing experience, to say the least, and suitably creepy and horrific. The movements of the living dead things are quite nasty, and any unnatural movements by supposed human beings always gets me.
Well worth seeing if you like Aussie horror films, and yet, kind of a notch above too, thanks to the style. 8 out of 10.
