In the first year of the German occupation of France, Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.

Josh Brolin Describes 'Jonah Hex' Brawls, Making Out With Megan Fox

"Jonah Hex" star Josh Brolin dropped by "The Tonight Show" yesterday, and spilled some details about the upcoming big-screen debut of DC's ex-confederate bounty hunter — including some thoughts on what John Malkovich brings to the lead villain role, and (we're not making this up) what it's like to make out with Megan Fox.
According to Brolin, Malkovich wasn't the studio's first choice to play Quentin Turnbull, the vicious plantation owner who faces off against Jonah Hex in the film. In fact, Brolin said he was the one who convinced the studio to bring in the "Burn After Reading" actor.
"This was another angry role that I thought John [Malkovich] could pull off," said Brolin. "The studio had brought up a Gary Oldman or somebody else."
"I said the thing about Gary Oldman or other actors like that is when they get angry ... they're usually pretty straightforward with their anger, you can

Review: A Serious Man - A fable with no moral

The idea of the Coen brothers delivering an autobiographical film is a strange one as despite their general warm reception from critics and gradually increasing box office success over the past 25 years the brothers have continued to plough the same furrow, turning in ambiguous, quirky comedy dramas more interested in playing with genre conventions than developing relatable characters. And, despite it reportedly being based on events from their childhood, A Serious Man fits this description pretty well.
Coming across like a Jewish counterpoint to the recent trend for tales of 60's America (as exemplified by Mad Men and Revolutionary Road), the film takes place in the Minnesotan suburbs of the Coens' youth and concerns itself with the trials and tribulations of Physics professor Larry Gopnik, played by relative unknown Michael Stuhlbarg. Which pretty much sums up the film's plot - we are invited as an audience to see a man's life spiral out of control,

Rumour: Spider-Man 4 Villains

There has been a lot of speculation in recent months that Spider-Man 4 may feature The Lizard, Vulture, and Black Cat, as its villains. MovieLine is today claiming that they have an inside tip telling them that Vulture will be one of the film’s two villains, but The Lizard and Black Cat will not be appearing, although Felicia Hardy (who is Black Cat’s alter ego) will be in the film as a new villain named The Vulturess. They claim that this new villain/Felicia Hardy will be played by Anne Hathaway (Brokeback Mountain, Get Smart) and that John Malkovich (Dangerous Liaisons, Burn After Reading) will play Vulture.
Personally I have never been a big fan of the Vulture character and think that there are many better villains to choose from for the next movie, and furthermore I cannot believe this new rumor of Black Cat being turned into The Vulturess is true,

Discuss: The Tedium of Love at First Sight

For the most part, I don't go blaming movies for people's actions, but sometimes I wonder if the super-quick weddings and subsequent divorces are all due to Hollywood's adoration of "love at first sight." Sure, the idea has been around forever, but forever ago, people weren't dating, getting to know each other, and then committing to each other as equals. Perhaps the theme provided a glamorization of life, and maybe a way to appease those young men and women doomed to arranged marriages, but these days, it's a ticket to strife. Yet no matter how much we evolve or regress as a society, love at first sight remains the main thrust of romantic entertainment.
The latest in the bunch: Variety reports that Youth in Revolt's David Permut is teaming with Dave Gross and Jesse Shapira to produce a new teen comedy called Pictures of You (written by Joshua Friedlander). The

A Serious Man - the ‘Jewish film’

The latest film from the prodigious Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, their ‘Jewish film’ as it seems to have become known, is an absolute triumph of rich humour and pathos and is, for me, their finest and most accomplished to date. With its release the Midwest brothers have firmly established themselves as two of the sharpest, and darkest, observers of American life, as well as the most prolific, and consistently brilliant, creative minds in the English –speaking film industry. Since their film debut in 1984 they have produced a stunning anthology that is of such a consistently high quality that even their relative misses (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Burn After Reading) must be considered minor triumphs that will, almost inevitably, be looked upon more favourably as that anthology grows. Furthermore, their ability to transcend stereotypes, to blur genres, and to do so with such exceptional dexterity, makes each film a new and rare treat.

Slumdog Millionaire is the year's most rented DVD, a survey has claimed. The Mirror reports that the poll, carried out by rental company Lovefilm, discovered that Burn After Reading and Taken completed the top three. Audiences were most likely to rent drama, but comedy was the next most popular genre. Film fans also preferred movies made locally, with residents of Edinburgh most likely to watch Trainspotting, and The Full Monty most popular with people living in Sheffield. Terry Pratchett's The Colour Of Magic was the most popular television DVD, followed by (more)

The ‘Burn After Reading’ star had been due to attend the Grand Prix Ball Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on October 31, but failed to show up.
Photographs later revealed he had joined partner Angelina Jolie and their six children trick-or-treating for Halloween in Los Angeles.
A source told Life and Style magazine: “He’s spending more time with the family and doing less of these appearances, even though it’s a huge sum of cash.”
A spokesperson for the event - which featured performances from Beyonce Knowles, Aerosmith and Timbaland, and raised money for clean water charity Fresh2o - admitted Brad had been expected to attend and was unsure why he had shunned the huge appearance fee.
James Magee, a representative for Global Event Management, said: “We were told he would be attending as the guest of the Tourism Development and Investment Company. But he was a no-show,

This marks the Coen Brothers' return, after the so-so star spangled affair that was Burn After Reading, to a more Fargo-esque approach to film making, and one that gets back in touch with their own youth. Larry Gopnik is a serious man. And God damn is he hilarious.

Us Box Office Visited By Three Ghosts...

It came as a surprise to very few people when A Christmas Carol topped the Us box office this weekend, since studio chiefs and analysts were all visited by ghosts pretty much guaranteeing it. That it took $31 million in the process, however, was something of a disappointment, despite doing better than The Polar Express, director Robert Zemeckis' last attempt at a Christmas classic.A whopping 74% of that total, however, came from 3D screenings, reaffirming the box office power of the third dimension, and if Carol does manage to follow The Polar Express' model and keep packing them in until January, it could end up doing extremely well despite the relatively slow start. It was still some distance ahead of the competition, however: Michael Jackson's This Is It fell to second with $14m, while new release The Men Who Stare At Goats took $13.3m, which is better than Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,

It was a miserly start to the Holiday movie season as the high profile movie positioned to bring the most cheer, A Christmas Carol, stumbled a bit out of the gate. Overall weekend business was off 14 percent from the same timeframe last year, when Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa landed, and was on the low end for early November.
Haunting approximately 6,500 screens at 3,683 sites, A Christmas Carol churned out an estimated $31 million, selling fewer tickets than Elf and The Santa Clause 2 and far fewer than star Jim Carrey's last Christmas movie, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. On the other hand, Carol's opening grossed more than The Polar Express, the previous performance-capture animated Christmas movie from director Robert Zemeckis that chugged strongly throughout the 2004 season despite its disappointing $23.3 million start, but that picture was muted by The Incredibles whereas Carol had no such direct competitor. According to distributor Walt Disney Pictures' exit polling,

Tilda Swinton is glad she wasn't a beautiful teenager. The 'Burn After Reading' actress insists she has always been comfortable with her androgynous appearance and was happy to be a "strange" adolescent. She said: "When I was nine or 10 I wasn't pretty anymore - which is a big advantage. It must be a nightmare to be a beautiful teenager. "I got this strange kind of androgyny. I was everything girls don't want to be - incredibly tall, incredibly thin, unimpressive. For years it's still been possible to hide as a sexual being." The 48-year-old 'Chronicles of Narnia' star admits she also felt her teenage years were lacking because she was isolated away from other popular pastimes due

The Men Who Stare At Goats
Directed by: Grant Heslov
Written by: Peter Straughan (screenplay), Jon Ronson (book)
Starring: George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges
Since the dawn of modern warfare, people have fantasized about the concept of super soldiers, enhanced human beings that could defend their homeland and give them the edge over their enemies. At this point, we're not just talking about fictional characters like Captain America, either; today's soldiers really are trained to push their body beyond its physical and mental limits, and outfitted with bleeding edge technological advancements. Military interests drive scientific research like few other fields, leading to all kinds of wacky pills and biological experiments. But would it surprise you to learn that U.S. military has delved into even stranger realms in the past, and may still be doing so today?

George Clooney May Star in The Descendants

George Clooney is a busy man these days. Last seen in the spy comedy Burn After Reading, Clooney is currently filming The American, and he has three more films slated for release in the next two months: The Men Who Stare at Goats, Up in the Air, and The Fantastic Mr. Fox (voice).
Variety is reporting that Clooney may also be starring in director Alexander Payne's first feature in five years, The Descendants, about a wealthy man who drags his two daughters along on a quest to find his wife's lover. The script, which is based on Kaui Hart Hemmings's novel of the same name, was written by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash and is being developed by Fox Searchlight.

George Clooney May Be Joining Alexander Payne’s The Descendants

I'm currently feeling a bit overloaded on George Clooney, what with his upcoming roles in The Men Who Stare at Goats, Up in the Air, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. After not seeing him on the big screen since Burn After Reading, it now feels like we're facing an onslaught on Clooney projects. Now, we may be able to add yet another one to the mix. Clooney is apparently eying the lead in Alexander Payne's upcoming Hawaii-based family dramedy, The Descendants, which is based on the novel of the same name by Kaui Hart Hemmings.
As we've reported previously, the novel concerns “besieged and wryly introspective attorney Matt King, the land-rich descendant of Hawaiian royalty and American missionaries and entrepreneurs. He wrestles with the decision of whether to keep his swath of valuable inherited land or sell it to a real estate developer. But even more critical, Matt also has

Up until A Serious Man, I don't think many would call Ethan and Joel Coen serious men. Looking at Fargo, Burn After Reading, and Raising Arizona, it's clear the Coens prefer to brandish their wickedly black, and sophisticated humor than make forays into stone-faced dramas. Even last year, when the two adapted Cormac McCarthy's heavily philosophical masterpiece No Country For Old Men, the film came out darkly sardonic. This makes their latest film so fascinating. Yes, there is still humor, but it's also heavily meditative and profound.
The cast is largely made up of unknown faces. The protagonist, Larry Gobnik, is played by Michael Stuhlbarg. He's a Jewish physics professor in the mid-west in 1967. His son is a unambituous pothead,
