I almost never cover box office here for these reasons:
It's covered so extensively elsewhere you'd think it was the most important thing about movies. It's not.$$$ has zero correlation to quality. And sometimes even not that much correlation to perceived quality (Witness how many people flock to sequels of films they didn't love, expecting not much at all. I'm guilty here, too... I've dubbed it The Blockbuster Loop)
Covering it only adds to the problem of 'the tipping factor', wherein something that is successful becomes even more successful (even if total crap) merely because people see the success and intuit that they're supposed to be into it (Twilight, anyone?).
I find it nearly impossible to manipulate the masses to my way of thinking. Curses! They wear deflector shields to ward off my psychic will. If I ever find a chink in those shields, suddenly everyone will be buying tickets »

Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau teamed up for "Couples Retreat," the weekend's No. 1 box-office flick. The comedy debuted with $35.3 million.
Universal Pictures is celebrating the film's high box-office take. The good news for the studio came just days after management shake-up where top managers March Shmuger and David Linde were replaced by Adam Fogelson and Donna Langley.
The studio is banking on "Couples Retreat's" excellent box-office performance after a crappy season with under-performing films such as "Land of the Lost" starring Will Ferrell, "Funny People" with Adam Sandler, and "Love Happens" with Jennifer Aniston.
But the good news for the weekend belonged to Paramount's "Paranormal Activity." Shot for $15,000, the horror flick debuted at No. 5 with $7.1 million showing in just 160 theaters! It averaged $44,163 per theater compared with $11,780 in 3,000 cinemas for "Couples Retreat!"
With the high demand for "Paranormal Activity," Paramount is putting the film in wide release beginning Oct. 16th. »

The success rate for lawsuits that claim the big star or major studio stole Idea X is astonishingly low. Somebody would have to help me out on the last time a court ruled in favor of the little guy.
We just wrote a couple of weeks ago about the pair of writers trying to halt the release of Love Happens because it sounded like an idea they gave Universal. So far: Nothing. Now it's Chris Rock's turn to be hounded by legal proceedings.
Regina Kimbell has filed suit against Rock and "several film companies," according to The Hollywood Reporter, stating that elemens of her film My Nappy Roots have been co-opted for the comedian's new documentary Good Hair. »

The guillotine that several studio experts had been saying for weeks was poised over the heads of Universal Pictures' co-chairmen Marc Shmuger and David Linde finally fell Monday. The two were removed even as reports that the studio and its corporate sibling NBC were said to be the center of complicated merger negotiations between their parent, General Electric, France's Vivendi Corporation, and cable provider Comcast. The two are being replaced by Adam Fogelson, the studio's head of marketing, and Donna Langley, its head of production. The shakeup occurs following the latest studio flop, Love Happens, which had been preceded by a long list of even bigger flops, including Land of the Lost, Funny People and Public Enemies." In an interview with today's (Tuesday) Los Angeles Times, Universal Studios President Ron Meyer said that the studio under Shmuger and Linde had become "destabilized." He added, "We needed a change in direction. In a company like this, it's very much about the culture, the people and the way we're all interacting with each other." Meanwhile, corporate sibling NBC continued to bleed viewers Monday night. It placed fourth in every half hour and produced its worst ratings yet for the Jay Leno Show, which attracted only 4.31 million viewers, well below his average when he hosted the Tonight show. »

Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland hacked away at the competition, making an estimated $25 million during its opening weekend. The new horror comedy hit expectations, proving that the sub genre is still very much alive. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, this film once hyped up at this year’s Comic-Con paid off big time at the box office. The same cannot be said for the three other films that were in competition that got swept under the rug thanks to the never ending zombie craze.
Still holding strong onto second place is Sony Pictures Animation’s own Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, taking in another $15.8 million. The children’s book adaptation, starring the voice talents of Bill Hader and Anna Faris, at this point will probably continue making a strong stand until Spike Jonze’s Where The Wild Things Are claws into theaters this mid-October. Overall, it was not a particularly impressive weekend at the box office, with the top films boasting relatively modest numbers. Sony Pictures should be smiling, though, because their studio nabbed the top two spots. According to Box Office Mojo, Zombieland lurched over the competition, raking in an estimated $25 million in its opening weekend. The horror comedy has already recouped its budget, and will likely be a big success story this year, buoyed by positive reviews and good word of mouth.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs continues to impress and took in another $16.7 million for a cumulative gross of $82 million. The unusual move to release Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D drummed up some impressive interest, netting $12.5 million. Disney is no doubt salivating over this, because Toy Story 3 is set to be released next summer.
The Invention of Lying from comedian Ricky Gervais had a unimpressive opening of $7.3 million. »

Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland did indeed break the horror-comedy slump over the weekend by notching a $25 million opening -- the second-highest debut ever for a zombie flick, just behind Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs held strong at #2 with another $16 million, no doubt taking a chunk of business away from the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3-D re-release, which earned just $12.5 mil. Ricky Gervais' The Invention of Lying had a rather lukewarm response with $7.35 million, while Surrogates rounded out the top 5. Both Whip It and Capitalism: A Love Story had somewhat disappointing (although not entirely unexpected) turnouts, landing them at #6 and #7 respectively. With all this competition, someone had to lose out, right? 1. Zombieland -- $25M 2. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs -- $16.7M 3. Toy Story -- $12.5M 4. The Invention of Lying -- $7.35M 5. Surrogates -- $7.34M 6. Whip It -- $4.85M 7. Capitalism: A Love Story »
