Rumor Patrol: ‘Hobbit’ Producers Eyeing Tom Waits?

13 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The Hobbit, the much-anticipated film from director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy)  may feature a turn from Tom Waits, or so says AICN.  Waits would inject some creepy fun into a cast that so far consists of Ian McKellan (Lotr) – although casting of The Hobbit has begun as of this week.

If you can survive the jump, there’s a quote on the other side!

Contact Music claims the following quote was given to AICN, although AICN doesn’t have this bit of info in quotes themselves (the mysteries of cyberspace!):

“As much as I’d like to say he’s a lock (certainty), I’m told he’s simply someone the production is talking about – but they seem to be talking about him pretty seriously.”

Where did this quote come from?  A source.  Would a talking banana qualify as a source?  Probably.

Cinematical used their noggins and speculated that »

'The Hobbit' filming delayed, no green light yet

30 November 2009 10:50 AM, PST | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

It now looks like Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro will have to delay filming for the upcoming epic adventure "The Hobbit." At least that's what Jackson said at a press conference for "The Lovely Bones."

So, what's going on? According to German site moviereporter.net, Jackson said they may have to push back filming from March 2010 to some time in the summer. Plus, they haven't received green light yet.

Jackson said the script for "The Hobbit: Part 1" is done, and right now, they are working on the second, which they hope will be done by the end of this year or the beginning of 2010. »

First Hobbit Script Completed, Making the Rounds

25 November 2009 4:55 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

After rocky courtroom battles and questions regarding whether or not these films would actually get made, The Hobbit seems to be coming along nicely, and rather quickly. Peter Jackson (never heard of him) recently admitted during a Lovely Bones press junket (Via In the News) that the script for the first film has been turned in to the studio and has been receiving generally positive remarks. Of course the studios like it. The Lord of the Rings trilogy made amounts of money that can only be measured in .shit-tons,. why would any studio even consider questioning Jackson.s judgement? Pete and his crack team of writers, comprised of his wife Fran Walsh, Hobbit helmer Guillermo del Toro, and frequent collaborator Philippa Boyens, not only topped off the first script, but have already powered through half of the follow up. Now that at least one script is done, we.ll be »

Peter Jackson Discusses 'Tintin' and 'The Hobbit'

25 November 2009 12:37 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

In a new interview with the BBC, Peter Jackson expresses no concern about handing over the reins of The Hobbit to Guillermo del Toro, and talks about his own next step as a director, the 3-D animated Tintin. "Tintin is great. It's made," Jackson says of his co-production with fellow celluloid hero Steven Spielberg. "The movie is cut together and now [we] are turning it into a fully-rendered film".

The process of taking the edited footage and transforming it into the Tintin we'll see in theaters should take a little less than two years, meaning Jackson will be inordinately busy in the fall of 2011, talking both that film and The Hobbit, still scheduled for a December release that year. There's a chance it might be delayed - I'm speculating here - because of the thin ice under MGM's feet right now.

But Jackson doesn't think bringing in a new director, even »

Peter Jackson Updates The Hobbit and Tintin

25 November 2009 5:38 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

With his Lovely Bones opening next month, writer-director Peter Jackson spent some time talking with the British press about a few of his upcoming producing projects. One of the most-anticipated is The Hobbit, the sequel to Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Jackson told In The News that an initial script has been delivered to the studio.

The Hobbit will be two movies and we've written the first script and delivered it to the studio who seem to be happy with it. We're now halfway through the second script and Philippa [Boyens], Fran [Walsh], Guillermo [Del Toro] and myself are doing the scripts and having great fun. It was an interesting experience because eight or nine years have passed since we wrote the Lord of the Rings screenplays and I was worried it'd be weird or hard or uncomfortable to go back there, but as soon as we started writing the scripts it was fun, »

Jackson talks Tintin and The Hobbit

25 November 2009 1:04 AM, PST | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Peter Jackson was in London last night for the premiere of The Lovely Bones, his much vaunted adaptation of Alice Sebold's 2002 best-seller - click here to read our review - but he was also in a chatty mood about his upcoming projects, namely Tintin and The Hobbit. Starting with Tintin, Jackson says that Spielberg has finished filming and has 'cut the film together using the motion captured footage, so it exists in a very rough state.' The bad news is that it is going to take two years to complete the computer animation, with the...

New Lovely Bones Poster and Clip

24 November 2009 4:50 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

After all of those tidbits about Tintin and The Hobbit during the Lovely Bones press conference, it's about time we have something new to show from director Peter Jackson's latest film. Today, Paramount released a new poster to promote The Lovely Bones; it's a poignant image and I much prefer it to the other promotional material we've seen so far -- even though this one addresses the uncomfortable truth of the film by showing the main character as she encounters her soon-to-be-killer. You can scroll down to see the image and, if you're interested, a new film clip from one of the more uplifting parts of the film.   The Lovely Bones Exclusive Clip     Source: Trailer Park »

Tintin Might Take Forever

24 November 2009 1:33 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Director Peter Jackson spoke about more than just The Hobbit and The Lovely Bones at a recent press conference. When asked about Steven Spielberg's movie, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which he produced, Jackson said, "Tintin is great. It's made. The movie is cut together and now [we] are turning it into a full-rendered film. So the movie to some degree, exists in a very rough state." That doesn't sound so bound until you read the part about Jackson estimating the post-production process will take two years. Two years until the world gets to see Simon Pegg, Daniel Craig, and Cary Elwes in a Tintin movie? That seems like forever.   Source: BBC »

First Hobbit Script Finished

24 November 2009 12:29 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

We're officially one step closer to seeing The Hobbit on the silver screen. At a recent press conference for his new film The Lovely Bones, director Peter Jackson revealed that the script for the first of the two Hobbit films had been finished and handed off to the studio. But that's not all. "We're now halfway through the second script and Philippa, Fran, Guillermo and myself are doing the scripts and having great fun," added Jackson. Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh previously co-wrote the screenplays for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy with Jackson. Now, all three are joining forces once again to produce and write both Hobbit films, though this time around it's Guillermo del Toro, not Jackson, in the director's chair. When asked about this new arrangement, Jackson assured the assembled that he was pleased in his role as screenwriter and producer on the films. "It's our »

Peter Jackson Has An Update On 'The Hobbit' Script, What's Done, Who's Writing

24 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Don't go getting all excited. The latest news on "The Hobbit" is essentially a progress report. And while progress is being made, those who wonder how Beorn will factor into the story, what Smaug will look like and what Gandalf's sub-plot will entail are going to have to keep waiting. On the other hand, fans will be pleased to learn that the writing of the scripts is going swimmingly.

Producer Peter Jackson said as much in an interview with UK site InTheNews (via TheOneRing.net). "The Hobbit will be two movies and we've written the first script and delivered it to the studio who seem to be happy with it," he revealed. "We're now halfway through the second script and Philippa [Boyens], Fran [Walsh], Guillermo [del Toro] and myself are doing the scripts and having great fun."

It's good to hear Jackson, who directed the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, mentioning del Toro's involvement in the writing process. »

Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit and Tintin Update

24 November 2009 5:57 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Peter Jackson is in London today for the Royal gala world premiere of The Lovely Bones. Interviewed by the BBC, the Kiwi director gave an update on his latest projects, which quite frankly, are massive.

The rise of Peter Jackson is a success story unlike any other (okay maybe Sam Raimi, too). From cheapo, homemade horror to Oscar glory is something early fans of Jackson could never have expected. Now, he’s so rich and powerful, he can do whatever the hell he wants.

Jackson told the BBC, “Tintin is great”, before adding it will take two years for the effects work to be complete. Directed by Steven Spielberg, expect the hype and buzz surrounding their joint venture to be excruiatingly slow. On top of this, there’s the small matter of a film called The Hobbit. Directing duty goes to Guillermo Del Toro, who is shooting on traditional 35mm. »

The Orphanage Remake Caught in Limbo

20 November 2009 9:25 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

There has been talk about a remake of the hit Spanish horror film The Orphanage for some time. In August, director Larry Fessenden (Wendigo) was commissioned by producer Guillermo Del Toro to adapt the script and direct. But we've heard nothing since. Today, according to an interview that Arrow in the Head conducted with Fassenden, it appears as if the remake is in a bit of trouble. According to the long-time actor/director, he's off the project after having some trouble in the casting process: The Orphanage was two years of waiting. Working on the script with Guillermo was a very exciting experience, but then I got into a casting miasma and that’s where the thing is; I think they’re gonna do it another way, actually. So I think I’m out of it. Hopefully they’ll still use my script, but I’m not sure I’m directing it anymore. That »

MGM Officially For Sale

18 November 2009 11:23 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in September we reported on the financial troubles of movie studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (or MGM for short). The studio has racked up a debt of a whopping $3.5 billion (yowza!) and, at the time, it was, “teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.” The company has two big properties currently in its possession, those being the Bond franchise and the upcoming Hobbit adaptation.

Luckily, but not surprisingly, both those properties are quite safe, with Warner Bros. stepping in to foot the bill for production on The Hobbit, while also handling domestic distribution for the film (which will be split into two parts). As I said, no surprise there that the two franchises are safe (guaranteed box office bank if ever there were any), but it was nice for that to be made official.

However, specific film properties aside, the trouble for MGM at large is that it was possibly going to auction of its assets. »

Just What Kind of Monster Is Guillermo del Toro?

18 November 2009 6:49 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

While everyone else was trolling around for hints about whom he might pick to play Bilbo, The Hobbit director Guillermo del Toro dropped an unexpected casting bombshell: That he will appear in his own movie. As a monster, no less. Coming from someone who takes his monsters so seriously — heck, he even takes them home as decorations — this promises to be a treat.

Del Toro won't be one of the major monsters; certainly not the dragon Smaug, whom he has spent the better part of a year designing. Like Alfred Hitchcock, he will only make a brief cameo in his movie. Here's what he says about the part:

I had a hand on the design of the creature and I will personally sculpt the appliances that will be applied on my face and hands.... I will have a line or two and die quickly.

So with that in mind, what are the options? »

Hannibal Lecter to Play a Dwarf in The Hobbit?

17 November 2009 1:20 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

AICN's Australian correspondent reports that Brian Cox, the Scottish actor who originated the role of Hannibal Lecter in 1986's Manhunter and tried to take down Wolverine in X2: X-Men United as William Stryker, may play one of the dwarves in The Hobbit, Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming prequel to The Lord of the Rings triology.

With John Rhys-Davies saying he would not return as the father of his Lord of the Rings character Gimli, clearly the search for actors to play the 13 dwarf characters is ongoing. However, Cox's casting is only a rumor at this point.

Empire speculates that Cox could play Thorin, the meatiest dwarf role in the original novel, but really, Cox could be playing any of the dwarves or none at all. In any case, we have to admit that we hope they're right.

The Hobbit will start shooting in March.

Brian Cox Considering a Trek to The Lonely Mountain?

16 November 2009 1:03 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It’s no secret around my neck of the woods that I’m a rabidly-obsessive Middle Earth fanatic. I re-read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings every year (with some Silmarillion usually thrown in for good measure every other year), I saw each of the films five times in the theatre (the first always at midnight, opening day), and I absolutely refuse to watch the standard editions now, much to my wife’s dismay, as I believe the extended editions to be the definitive and only cuts that exist. So, to say that I mildly excited when news about The Hobbit began to drift across the fields of the Shire would be an understatement akin to calling the Sammath Naur nothing more than a pothole. What do we know? We know that Peter Jackson is onboard to produce and that Guillermo Del Toro will be taking over the director’s chair. Unfortunately »
