10 Movie Events That Shaped the Decade (For Movie Fans)

21 December 2009 10:29 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We’ve come to the end of 2009, so we thought we’d weigh in with a look back at the first 10 years of the 21st century in the movie world and discuss the various different “events” which shaped the decade. Obviously we can’t cover absolutely everything, but sticking true to our core movie genres on the site, we’re just going to concentrate on the comic-book, sci-fi, action (and so forth) types of movies and take a look at what films had the maximum impact over this decade.

It’s amazing to think that it’s been 10 years since movies like The Matrix, American Beauty and Fight Club (to name but a few) came out in 1999 (check out our 1999 decade highlight, if you haven’t already). A Lot of movies – somewhere in the vicinity of 5,000-6,000 – have been released since then. We’ve had the good, the bad and …

James Franco Lands an Adam Lambert Kiss on 'SNL'

21 December 2009 1:10 AM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Playing a guest host on "Saturday Night Live", James Franco channeled his Adam Lambert side on the show's December 19 episode. In a sketch titled "The Kissing Family", the 31-year-old is captured on camera making out with Will Forte, one of the show's stars who plays his grandfather.

For the sketch, Franco portrays a college student who has brought home his new girlfriend to meet his family for the first time. As the story unravels, it becomes clear that his family has a strong Public Display of Affection quality. After landing a kiss on Bill Hader who takes on his on-screen brother, the star of "Pineapple Express" went on to tongue Forte.

This man-on-man kiss isn't the first time for James Franco. He has been seen starring as Sean Penn's gay lover in the awards-winning "Milk". It is said to be a sort of parody for Lambert's controversial performance at …

Review: Saturday Night Live - James Franco/Muse

20 December 2009 9:50 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S35E10) I hope you all rolled a towel against the crack of the door before watching James Franco host. This was the most I've laughed at an episode in quite a while, but I am still not entirely sure if it's because watching for ninety minutes gave me a bit of a contact high. Okay, even if you argue that I'm inferring a lot because bits of Pineapple Express are still lingering in my brain, there's no denying Franco was definitely extra-squinty, extra-grinny, and was half-slurring, half-spitting his speech through most of the night.

There was also a lot of making out. No man, woman or tree was safe. Or bong, I guess. Maybe.

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Four

19 December 2009 11:50 PM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three …

James Franco set to go live on 'SNL' tonight -- we can't wait

19 December 2009 5:27 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

James Franco, the "Pineapple Express" actor who considers his stint on ABC's "General Hospital" "performance art" will truly be performing tonight (Dec. 19) as host of "Saturday Night Live."

We can't wait to see how Franco-- who has recently played a stoner, a Spider-Man's best friend and a mysterious artist -- will fare among the likes of the cast and if he'll be as memorable as some of the season's other hosts like Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Top 7 Movies of the Decade (another opinion)

19 December 2009 5:09 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

I have always struggled with the notion that perhaps movies, as a whole, are getting worse. As anyone who has seen what’s been playing for the past ten years will notice, there’s plenty of evidence to indicate that the brightness from the moving pictures is getting darker. Screenwriters and directors are sticking to formulas when hesitant to experiment with their creative juices, and at the same time, big studios are playing it safe by adapting anything in sight. But while many movies crowd up the marquee like a group of regular students with satisfying GPAs, cinema has still been able to continue thanks to true poindexters of the art, those who craft experiences so fulfilling and basically perfect that the deconstruction of “the movies” seems to still be a myth. With films like Talk to Her, Superbad, and There Will Be Blood, …

Friday Fun: 50 Movies, 1 Awesome Trailer

18 December 2009 8:09 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

While perusing around YouTube I came across this trailer by a guy called “vadoskincheg”.  It’s three minutes of pure awesomeness.  He created a mash up of 50 movies and cut it together to make a one trailer.  Using clips from all sorts of different films like Sherlock Holmes, Terminator Salvation, New Moon, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Transformers, 2012, Pineapple Express and many many others, this guy was actually able to make it flow.  When I saw Pineapple Express, I thought that was a sort of one-of-these-kids-is-doing-their-own-thing-one-of-these-kids-does-not-belong type of thing, but it totally works!  Even the music fits!

Take  a couple of minutes and check it out. Totally worth it and see if you can keep up on all of the movies represented.  Let us know your thoughts afterwards!

Directors of the Decade: David Gordon Green

17 December 2009 5:45 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Robert here, continuing my series of the directors that shaped the past 10 years. Our next subject is a director who made his debut this decade and was immediately compared to Terrence Malick. Some have suggested that he’s faltered recently and maybe they’re right but his early films are such a high point in modern indie cinema he more than qualifies as one of the best directors of this decade. I’m talking about: David Gordon Green.

Number of Films: Five

Modern Masterpieces: George Washington.

Total Disasters: None, though a few mixed efforts.

Better than you remember: Undertow, while flawed is still a worthwhile endeavor, better than the reaction it's been given.

Awards: Some Spirit Award noms, but not much else. Not enough.

Box Office: 89 mil for Pineapple Express, the expected winner.

Critical Consensus: George Washington was his best received film. All downhill from there.

Favorite Actor: Paul Schnieder

'The Hangover' Arrives On Home Video To Golden Globe Noms And An Increasingly Busy Cast

15 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Before "The Hangover" became one of the biggest success stories of 2009, it was just a Warner Bros. comedy starring that guy who cheats from "He's Just Not That Into You," the dude from "The Office," and some short, fat guy with a beard.

Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis weren't putting all their eggs in one basket, because I'm fairly certain none of them expected "The Hangover" to gross over $459 million in the worldwide box office. In fact, the stars of "The Hangover" have been some of the busiest guys around Hollywood over the past year. Here's a look at what else they've been up to since "The Hangover" hit theaters in June -- beyond, of course, preparing for 2011's "The Hangover 2."

Bradley Cooper

Though Bradley Cooper surprised audiences and critics with his comedic chops in "The Hangover," he chose not to return to the bro-comedy formula. Cooper's …

Sr Pick [Video]: 50 Movie Trailers In One

11 December 2009 4:37 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

For some, myself included, movie trailers are part of the movie-going experience. The commercials that precede them are the annoying things, but the trailers (as long as there’s not too many) add to the enjoyment of going to the movies. Of course, following daily movie news means we see trailers online before we do in theaters, which is slightly less affective in my eyes but nonetheless, a well made trailer can essentially decide whether someone will see a movie or not.

For the most part, the best movie in the world isn’t going to get butts in seats if it has a horrible trailer…

Sometimes they can be subtle yet still stay in your mind afterwards (the Little Children trailer comes straight to mind), and sometimes they can be bold and in-your-face, acting as an all-out assault on the senses to make as much of an impression as …

DVD review: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Choo-Choo Express

7 December 2009 8:11 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

It’s amazing that after 80 years, Mickey Mouse and company are still able to retain that patented Disney family fun. In the latest DVD edition from the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Choo-Choo Express, Mickey, Donald Duck, Goofy and the rest of them are back just in time for winter.

Professor Ludwig von Drake has invented snow that doesn’t melt, but what good is this snow if it can’t be played with during the blistering heat of summer? Soon our Disney gang hops aboard a train, put together through educational interaction with its viewers, in order to retrieve the snow from atop Mistletoe Mountain. Like most edu-tainment tales, travels are not easy and our troupe encounters obstacles on their way to the mountain top: pigs in the way, a wheel coming off the train and puzzles to solve. But have no fear; Mickey and the younglings watching the program finally reach their destination. …

'SNL': The Battle of Andy Samberg's shorts

"Saturday Night Live's" super funnyman Andy Samberg sure has some hilarious, sometimes colorful, sometimes risque and off-putting shorts. So The Dish Rag thought we should ask our Zap2it readers to help choose a Samberg champ. Can you please help a brother out after the jump.

Wait, you didn't actually think we were asking readers to vote in a frivolous fashion poll. We reserve those for monumental, life-altering Hollywood events and occasions like ... the MTV VMAs and Teen Choice Awards.

Anyway, of course we were referring to Andy Samberg's wildly popular "SNL" digital shorts. On the Dec. 5 episode hosted by "Gossip Girl's" Blake Lively (a.k.a. Our goddess Queen Serena van der Woodsen), Samberg took on rap persona "Shy Ronnie" alongside musical guest Rihanna producing the usual side-splitting results.

We're sure hoping "SNL" honcho Lorne Michaels and the higher powers are cooking up some Samberg specials …

James Franco on his 'General Hospital' stint: It's performance art

4 December 2009 9:51 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

James Franco has finally said what he's doing on "General Hospital."

The "Pineapple Express" and "Spider-Man" star says he took a role on the ABC soap opera as an exercise in performance art, a subject he's been fascinated with for years and wanted to experiment with himself.

Ok. Sure.

In an essay for the Wall Street Journal, he writes that his two-month arc, in which he plays a mysterious artist named Franco, is meant to "disrupt the audience's suspension of disbelief."

"No matter how far I got into the character, I was going to be perceived as something that doesn't belong to the incredibly stylized world of soap operas," Franco writes. "... In performance art, the outcome is uncertain -- and this was no exception. My hope was for people to ask themselves if soap operas are really that far from entertainment that is considered critically legitimate. Whether they did was out of my hands. …

First Look: James Franco as Allen Ginsberg

3 December 2009 9:44 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Now that the Sundance 2010 line-up is out (competition and non-competition both released this week), we will start to see some preview images coming out from many of the much-anticipated films. First up is Howl, in which James Franco plays revered beat poet Allen Ginsberg. The story follows Ginsberg as he defends his poem "Howl" during his 1957 obscenity trial. Below, we see not only Franco as Ginsberg, but also Mad Men star Jon Hamm. Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, the film will also star Mary-Louise Parker, Jeff Daniels and David Strathairn. This is just one of many films that I will be keeping an eye on at Sundance in January. I'm excited to see James Franco -- who has been equal parts brilliant in films like Pineapple Express and Milk -- take on yet another dramatic role. And a lead role, nonetheless. Here's hoping that it will turn out well. We'll …

2010 Sundance Film Festival: New Photos for Howl Starring James Franco and Jon Hamm

3 December 2009 11:53 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

New photos for Howl, the upcoming film starring James Franco as revered beat poet Allen Ginsberg, have come online as the film approaches its premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.  I find these images impressive because we’re once again forced to recognize that James Franco can do anything.  Look at these photos and then remember that he’s doing a guest stint on General Hospital and it could be part of an art project.  He was also hilarious last year in Pineapple Express.  These projects are so vastly different and yet Franco always excels and it looking like Howl will be no different.

For those unfamiliar with the project, Howl is about the 1957 obscenity trial against Ginsberg for his poem, “Howl”.  Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, the film co-stars Jon Hamm, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeff Daniels, and David Strathairn.  Hit the jump to check out the images.  The …

Exclusive: The Hangover Deleted Scene

Ken Jeong has been making small but perfectly formed appearances in the likes of Role Models, Pineapple Express and Couples Retreat. But he gets a plum role in The Hangover, as a gangster who does his level best to steal the movie - and here's a bonus deleted scene showing Jeong's freewheeling improv as he shows his affection for the men he's trying to blackmail. For the three of you who missed this one in the cinema, it's the story of three friends (played by Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis) trying to find the missing groom Doug (Justin Bartha) after their stag do goes horribly wrong. Jeong's Mr Chow plays an eccentric gangster who may hold the key to Doug's whereabouts. Danny McBride, That Funny Dude From That Movie

2 December 2009 7:49 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Actor and sometime screenwriter Danny McBride has risen to the top of Hollywood's comedy food chain, having handily stolen scenes from Ben Stiller ("Tropic Thunder") and Will Ferrell ("Land of the Lost"), and become the headliner of his own series as washed-up baseballer Kenny Powers on HBO's "Eastbound & Down," a series he helped conceive. McBride's success is deserved, though he certainly gets by with a little help from his friends. Long before he was the "thug life"-lovin' drug supplier in director David Gordon Green's "Pineapple Express," he served as a second unit director on Green's 2000 arthouse breakthrough "George Washington." And he wouldn't have had a cameo in Jody Hill's "Observe and Report" if he hadn't co-wrote and starred in Hill's indie cult fave "The Foot Fist Way" as a renegade Taekwondo instructor who beats up kids.

Momentarily ditching his usual partners in crime, McBride can next be …
