It's verging on a sweep for Kathryn Bigelow. Fresh off the Golden Globe nom for The Hurt Locker, the Toronto Film Critic's Association has just published their list of award winners and while the film itself didn't get the best picture nod, there Bigelow is again as best director. The fact that they picked Nicolas Cage as best actor for his role in Bad Lieutenant makes me particularly proud of where I live, as does the general diversity of the rest of the list. If we're not careful people might actually start to think that Toronto's critics actually watch more than is available in the multiplex ...
The list!

"Inglourious Basterds" (Alliance Films)
Runner-up:

New ‘Crazies’ Trailer Ups The Creepy Factor

A couple of months ago, we brought you the first trailer for Breck Eisner directed remake of George Romero’s horror movie The Crazies. It was long on style and short on substance and the use of Gary Jules’ great song Mad World as a musical backdrop just didn’t really work. My guess is they choose it just based on the title and I seriously doubt the song will be on the soundtrack.
Now Eisner has released another trailer exclusively with Yahoo! Movies (you can head over there if you want to see the HD version).
The Crazies takes place in Ogden Marsh, Iowa. The type of small town where everyone knows their neighbors and they all show up to watch the high school baseball game. Everything is built off Main Street where (I’ll just bet you) there is only one stop light and it’s blinking yellow and red after midnight.

“The Chronicles of Riddick” Sequel Begins Scouting in New Zealand

According to Vin Diesel’s Facebook page, the third Chronicles of Riddick film is about to get underway.
The “Chronicles of Riddick 3” is currently in pre-production and has already begun scouting locations in New Zealand.
Diesel’s Fb status update:
The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already… that’s exciting.
Diesel first played the gruff, sliver-eyed anti-hero Riddick in the well-received cult hit “Pitch Black” in 2000. Four years later he reprised the role in 2004’s generally panned big-budget flop “The Chronicles of Riddick“.
Diesel has also voiced the character in the animated short “Dark Fury” and the video games “Escape from Butcher Bay” and “Assault on Dark Athena“.
In August, director David Twohy (Pitch Black, The Chronicles of Riddick, A Perfect Getaway) discussed that he’d sketched out two possible ideas for continuing the films and was working to get the third film in front of the

For those of you looking for the return of Vin Diesel as arguably his best on-screen character, Riddick, it looks like it’s one step closer to reality.
On his Facebook page yesterday, Diesel put up an update which included a line revealing that the team behind the next Riddick movie were scouting out locations already – a great thing to hear for those of us anticipating the sequel to 2004’s Chronicles of Riddick.
“The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already… that’s exciting”
The last we heard on the Riddick 3 front was from writer David Twohy, the man who wrote A Perfect Getaway in addition to writing and directing the Riddick films. That was back in August and at the time, he was working out two ideas for the sequel, one of which that would be Rated R. There was studio interest in another PG-13 version, but

Dread Central hit the set of Sony’s 30 Days of Night: Dark Days earlier this month - the film wraps principal photography today in Vancouver, Canada, under the watchful eye of co-scripter (with Steve Niles) and director Ben Ketai - and while there sat down with producer Jr Young (among others) to discuss the flick (cast interviews to come).
“This is a very edgy film,” Young, who previously produced The Messengers, told Dread while intently watching a scene being played out in video village – a scene which featured a rather hysterical and bloody actress (Katherine Isabelle) pleading for her life. “Ben knows this world. I think it comes natural to him.”
Starring Kiele (A Perfect Getaway) Sanchez, Mia (De Palma’s The Black Dahlia) Kirschner, Rhys ("Entourage") Coiro, Diora (Night of the Demons) Baird, Harold ("Lost") Perrineau, Troy (A Marine Story) Ruptash, Jackson Berlin, John De Santis, Marco Sorian, Monique (Cabin in the Woods) Ganderton,

Marley Shelton has taken on many personalities during her 19-year acting career.
She was the girl next door in Bubble Boy, a hard-nosed FBI agent on the CBS series Eleventh Hour and a possible killer in A Perfect Getaway. But it’s her quirky role in 2001’s Sugar & Spice that helped prepare Marley for the arrival of her daughter, West, on September 6th.

What I Think of this Weekend's Other Box Office Contenders -- "The Box" and "The Fourth Kind"

Everyone's predicting that "Disney's A Christmas Carol" will take the box-office crown this weekend. And it just might, that's why Warner Bros. and Universal are counter-programming with "The Box" and "The Fourth Kind," respectively.
For my review of "Disney's A Christmas Carol, click here. Now, here's what I think of:
"The Box"
Based on a Richard Matheson short story which later became a "Twilight Zone" episode called "Button, Button," "The Box" tells the tale of Norma (Cameron Diaz) and Arthur (James Marsden), a suburban couple who receive a gift of a lifetime -- a simple wooden box that bestows upon its owner $1 million with just a press of a button.
One million dollars is a big deal specially since the film is set in 1976. So Norma and Arthur have the box, they'll get $1 million if they press the button, blah blah blah...but there's always a catch! Pressing the button

This scribe (pictured right) just got in from a whirlwind visit from the set of 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, which is currently shooting Day 13 of 25 in Vancouver, Canada, and while I can’t spill much yet (although blood was spilled there gratuitously), I can give you an update on casting.
Joining the previously announced Kiele (A Perfect Getaway) Sanchez (taking over the ‘Stella’ role played by Melissa George in the original 30 Days of Night), Mia (Depalma’s The Black Dahlia) Kirschner, Rhys ("Entourage") Coiro, Diora (Night of the Demons) Baird, and Harold ("Lost") Perrineau are Troy (A Marine Story) Ruptash as Agent Norris, Jackson Berlin, John De Santis, Marco Sorian, and Katherine (Ginger Snaps, "Supernatural") Isabelle, whose scene that Dread witnessed was rather disquieting (and I mean that in the best of ways – director Ben Ketai is throwing down with this one).
My thanks to Sony and the production

It appears that FX believes Westerns are in after the network has added the post civil war drama Reconstruction to its catalog. The new show revolves around a civil war veteran who returns to his hometown in Missouri and struggles to rebuild his life. Director Peter Horton hopes to draw parallels between current events such as the recent economic collapse and attempts to rebuild a war ravaged Iraq. This should ad an interesting twist as FX continues to develop more quality programming.
Reconstruction won’t be the only Western to make an appearance on FX. Lawman, a contemporary Western starring Timothy Olyphant follows a Marshall’s attempts to clean up a small town. The show was recently picked up by FX and won’t air until sometime next year. Trailer Embedded below Warning, some strong language.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant Review

Short Version: Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is an entertaining “alternative” vampire movie that should appeal to teens - but it’s Not for younger kids.
Screen Rant reviews Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant
I haven’t read the books this movie is based on (from what I understand, the first three books of a 12 book series - a lot to cram into one film) and I didn’t have any preconceived notions about it good or bad going in. Based on trailers and commercials I really didn’t know what to expect, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised… in most part due to John C. Reilly’s performance as Larten Crepsley, mentor to our burgeoning hero Darren Shan (played by Chris Massoglia).
Darren Shan is your basic “good kid” teenager. He gets good grades, stays out of trouble and listens to his overly “square” parents.

Recently someone asked in the comments if Paranormal Activity was my #1 film of the year so far and while it is definitely a favorite as evidenced by my A+ review, it won't end up my #1. However, with some time to go in the year I decided to piece together a couple of alphabetical lists of my favorite films and my least favorite films, and open up the conversation to the floor to see where you all stand as we approach the final two months of 2009.
Favorite Films (in alphabetical order)
500 Days of Summer (I enjoyed this film, but I'm worried a second viewing may begin to grate on me a bit)
An Education (I've seen it twice and it lost none of its charm)
Bronson (loved it, the character created by Hardy alone was enough to keep me enthralled)
The Brothers Bloom (I just received the DVD and anxious to
