Yahoo! Movies has premiered a new trailer for Breck Eisner’s remake of George Romero’s 1973 horror film, The Crazies. The film stars Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood), Radha Mitchell (Surrogates), Joe Anderson (Across the Universe), and Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th, 2009) as the unfortunate residents of a town where residents are inexplicably turning, to quote Robert Downey Jr. in Zodiac, “a tad bit fuckered in the head.” I was lucky enough to get to go to the set this past March where I saw some cool stuff, especially in terms of the special effects make-up, which is important when you’re making a gruesome horror movie. You can click here to read my full set report where I go in depth about the make-up and how time stops when in you’re in a high school classroom no matter how old you are.

New ‘Crazies’ Trailer Ups The Creepy Factor

A couple of months ago, we brought you the first trailer for Breck Eisner directed remake of George Romero’s horror movie The Crazies. It was long on style and short on substance and the use of Gary Jules’ great song Mad World as a musical backdrop just didn’t really work. My guess is they choose it just based on the title and I seriously doubt the song will be on the soundtrack.
Now Eisner has released another trailer exclusively with Yahoo! Movies (you can head over there if you want to see the HD version).
The Crazies takes place in Ogden Marsh, Iowa. The type of small town where everyone knows their neighbors and they all show up to watch the high school baseball game. Everything is built off Main Street where (I’ll just bet you) there is only one stop light and it’s blinking yellow and red after midnight.

Flush from the success of “Twilight” and its sequel “New Moon,” Summit Entertainment has picked up the film rights for Top Cow’s “Alibi.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, John Hlavin (“The Shield”) is onboard to write the adaptation. Halvin was also recently tapped to write the fourth “Underworld” film. “Alibi” co-creator and Top Cow President Matt Hawkins is also attached as an executive producer, along with Marc Silvestri.
An “Alibi” one shot written by Joshua Hale Fialkov with art by Jeremy Haun was published last year as part of Top Cow’s Pilot Season. The story follows a wealthily playboy named John Stephens whose high profile social life serves as the perfect cover for his twin brother Rick — a top-secret government assassin. The concept was created by Hawkins and Michael Renegar.
Back in August, “Alibi” was also picked up by Mandeville Films, the company behind the recent adaptation of

Summit Invests In More Genre Stuff: Adaptation of Comic Book Alibi and Eli Roth-Produced Invasion

Summit is best known for Twilight, but the company has put weight behind other genre-ish stuff that has, let's say, a more masculine appeal. As recent examples, there was the semi-superhero film Push, and the Nic Cage film Knowing. Now the studio is getting behind an adaptation of the Top Cow comic series Alibi and an alien invasion film called, er, Invasion.
Variety reports on Alibi, which was optioned by the same outfit behind the Bruce Willis film Surrogates, and will be written by John Hlavin. The original comic, created by Top Cow's Matt Hawkins and Michael Renegar, written by Joshua Hale Fialkov and illustrated by Jeremy Haun, "centers on a well-known socialite whose public presence establishes a perfect cover for the covert activity of his secret twin brother, a government assassin." If the twin brother's existence is a secret, I don't know why he needs the alibi; I'm sure

Action superstar Bruce Willis (the Die Hard franchise) headlines another spectacular thrill ride in the gripping film Surrogates, coming to Blu-ray® Hi-Def and DVD on January 26, 2010 from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. Directed by Jonathan Mostow (Terminator Three: Rise of the Machines, U-571), Surrogates is a heart-pounding futuristic tale of splintered identity, treachery and murder. Both DVD and Blu-ray editions come with an array of bonus features that not only invite viewers to delve deep into the darkly imaginative world of Surrogates, but describe how this futuristic idea is not such a far-off reality.

FBI agent Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) lives in a world where robotic surrogates stand in for people, protecting them from violence, contagion—and the appearance of aging.

Surrogates (2009) Movie Review

Bruce Willis’ “Surrogates” may have had a good idea going in, but the result is … middling. To be sure, as with any big-budget sci-fi film, it’s enjoyable enough on a base level, but this isn’t a movie that people will be using to salute Bruce Willis when the “Die Hard” star signs off to visit that Big Hollywood Sky. It’s a vanilla effort, disappointingly so given all the talent (not to mention money) involved. Jonathan Mostow is a good director with a knack for action, but his work here feels restrained and muted. I’m not sure how much of the idea survived from the script by Michael Ferris and John D. Bracato, or from the original source material, a comic book by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, but what’s left is average at best, not-even-trying at worst.
It is the future, and lifelike robotic surrogates have become commonplace.

"Surrogates" will be available on DVD and Blu-ray Hi-Def in January.
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced it will release the Bruce Willis action movie on January 26. The movie, referred to by Collider.com critic Matt Goldberg as "high-octane action," will come complete with a variety of special features for an enhanced viewing experience.
Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, the movie is set in a futuristic society where robot bodies outnumber those of actual humans. The robots, surrogates, are made in the likeness of people who control them from their home. Without any risk of danger, the surrogates allow users to experience an exciting life without any kind of repercussions. Among the users is FBI agent Tom Greer (Willis), who is called upon to solve a mystery involving the surrogates, which are beginning to malfunction, killing their users. And when

We already know that Hugh Jackman has been confirmed to star in Real Steel, which director Shawn Levy said will be "a rousing sports movie." In the futuristic film, to be produced by Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider for the reformed DreamWorks, Jackman will play a struggling Robot Boxing promoter who finds hope in a discarded robot that always seems to win.
As previously reported, the movie takes place in a world where human boxers have been replaced by 2,000-pound machines. According to Variety, the Jackman character discovers he has an 11-year-old son, whom he develops a bond with as their robot pummels his way to glory. The screenplay is based on a short story by Richard Matheson; it was initially adapted by Dan Gilroy, but John Gatins penned the most recent version, which DreamWorks hopes to have in production next June.
The project will have a budget of roughly $80M,

Stars in peril

As low budget movies rake in the cash this year, star vehicles are tanking.
2009 has been a year rich in unexpected successes and flops, leading Hollywood studios to consider dropping big name stars for future projects, or at least drastically reducing their clout.
While small productions like "The Hangover", "District 9" and "Paranormal Activity" have been immensely successful in the past months, several big budget star vehicles have tanked at the box office.
Among the "victims": "A Christmas Carol" starring Jim Carrey, "Surrogates" starring Bruce Willis, "Funny People" starring Adam Sandler, "Imagine That" starring Eddie Murphy and "Duplicity" starring Julia Roberts all did much worse than expected.
The upcoming "Twilight" sequel "New Moon" will not likely change the trend, either. The saga, made relatively cheaply and starring young talent whose stardom comes from the first episode, is expected to beat all the other competing movies, confirming the question: are stars still really necessary?

‘Red’ Adds More Award-Winning Actors To Cast

We haven’t been keeping enough tabs on the adaptation of Red, based on the comic book mini-series created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner and published by DC/Wildstorm between 2003-2004. The film adaptation first popped onto our radar when action man Bruce Willis signed-on to star, followed soon after by the news that acclaimed actor Morgan Freeman would be joining Willis . Completing the trifecta of acting heavyweights, last week we heard that Helen Mirren was onboard for Red; that’s three Golden Globe and/or Oscar-winners coming together for an obscure comic book flick! Crazy, right?
Well it gets even crazier, as we now have more famous names to add to the cast list of Red… Last week news broke that Mary Louise Parker (Weeds) and John C. Reily were in talks for the film, and today we learn (thanks to Collider) that they will be joined by

Mitchell has appeared nude in High Art (1998) and Feast of Love. She was also recently in Surrogates with Bruce Willis and starred in Pitch Black with Vin Diesel. A very impressive resume and the reason we are welcoming her to our Cht section.

Sony's Michael Jackson documentary "This Is It" is leading the worldwide box office, and I'm not surprised. The film delivered a strong debut overseas, scoring $68.5 million in 108 markets since its release Wednesday. That brings its worldwide total to $101 million.
Still going strong internationally was Pixar's animated adventure "Up," which dropped one spot and landed at No. 2 with a weekend gross of $12.8 million. The film's total gross currently stands at $352.7 million.
Meanwhile, Disney productions "Surrogates" and "G-Force" tied for third place with $6.1 million each. "Force" brought its international total to $148 million, while "Surrogates" with Bruce Willis reached a cumulative gross of $60.3 million.
