The VSI building was depicted by using a digitally altered version of the Dallas Bank of America Plaza (informally known as 'The Green Building').
When agents Greer and Peters first visit VSI, they walk past a group of video screens showing VSI commercials and other programming. In part of one screen is briefly seen a rotating model of a Terminator T-800 head. Jonathan Mostow was the director of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003).
Some scenes were filmed at the Draper Factory in Hopedale, Massachusetts.
A close up shot of Strickland's FBI file shows his place of birth as Lynn, Massachusetts. Lynn is also the real life birth place of actor Jack Noseworthy, the actor who plays Strickland in the film.
During the opening montage showing the development of the surrogates, there is a shot of an Asian man with an android twin. This is actually footage of Dr. Hiroshi Ishiguro of Osaka University and his creation - Geminoid, a prototype android double of himself.
In the "beauty shop" where Maggie works a device can be seen for holding the "faces" of surrogates, the device is actually a Gorillapod, a flexible tripod for cameras.
