Yuri AND Mecha, oh my!
2 July 2007 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I watched this as the fans of the show dribbled out subtitled episodes before it got licensed and Youtube scrubbed it. This required some dedicated viewing. Yes, it has lesbian (yuri) scenes but they're pretty tame. The series features a bunch of little girls (actually, a bunch of alien beings who resemble little girls) who really, really like each other and possess highly developed skills which pretty much depend on their ability to like each other. Yes, it has an all-female voice cast (which takes some getting used to, especially when a male character is "speaking"). Yes, some of the character interactions are problematic. BUT! If you can get past all this, especially the yuri-snogging, you will find a character-driven story that can really get its hooks into you. It takes on some very big subjects - war, patriotism, class antagonisms, and faith and handles them well. Ultimately, it is a story about loss. By the end of the first episode, the central characters have lost half of their squadron, and by the end of the series, they have lost everything but each other - and some of them have lost even that. I am reminded of the BBC production of "Piece of Cake" but with more kissing and shower scenes. I am very much looking forward to a DVD release.
