Grey's Anatomy: Katherine Heigl to Save Puppies!

3 December 2009 3:14 PM, PST | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Taking time off Grey's Anatomy, Katherine Heigl is apparently doing something else other than film romcoms and spend quality time with newly adopted daughter Naleigh. Izzie Stevens' alter-ego is also doing something for little puppies whose cuteness are apparently causing them more harm than good.

Shelter operators in Los Angeles have lamented that a lot of people have brought lap dogs, Chihuahua's, and other small dogs after watching movies like Beverly Hills Chihuahua. When the fashion fades, however, and the dogs are no longer in vogue, people drop them off to shelters.

Forget the Oscars, the Fidos are best in show | Charles Gant

Hollywood celebrities can't compete with the canine stars of the Fido awards for dogs in cinema

In Hollywood, awards season is already in full swing, although it's at least three months until the Oscars ceremony. The big news so far is that, in a year in which the Best Picture category has been extended from five nominees to 10, the scaling down of the big studios' specialty divisions has led to the inevitable consequence of there being significantly fewer awards-worthy pictures.

Such concerns were far from the minds of the dog lovers who attended the third annual Fido awards, honouring canine excellence on the big screen, held yesterday at London's BFI Southbank. Who cares about the impact of the fiscal crisis on Hollywood when tails are still wagging on the big screen?

There may no longer be film franchises to rival those family friendly staples Lassie and Rin Tin Tin, but …

Get Ready for "Marmaduke" the Movie!

3 November 2009 9:34 AM, PST | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

"Marmaduke," the long-running comic strip is about to bark into theaters near you! And Owen Wilson will lend a helping hand.

The actor will voice the rambunctious Great Dane for Fox. The live-action CG movie tells the tale of the Winslows who move from Kansas to Orange County with their dog Marmaduke.

Based on the comic strip created in 1954 by Brad Anderson and Phil Leeming, the script is written by Tim Rasmussen and Vince Di Meglio. There is going to be a Mutts vs. Pedigrees war (fun!), and Marmaduke will even fall in love. Awww...

The humans will be played by Judy Greer, Lee Pace, and William H. Macy; Fergie, Emma Stone, George Lopez (he sure loves voicing animals, he was just in "Beverly Hills Chihuahua), Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Steve Coogan, Damon Wayans, and Marlon Wayans will provide the voices.

Wilson's director from "Shanghai Noon," Tom Dey, is set to helm …

Owen Wilson To Voice Marmaduke

2 November 2009 10:14 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

What is it with Owen Wilson and dogs? Relatively fresh off the big hit that was Marley & Me, the star has signed on to provide his laidback drawl to the title star of Fox’s live-action/CG canine comedy, Marmaduke.Based on a long-running comic strip that, we’ll be honest, passed Empire by during our formative years (we were Andy Capp fans), Marmaduke will tell the tale of a family who move to Orange County for a brand new life, only to find that their lovable Great Dane, Marmaduke, has a talent for attracting trouble, in the shape of a turf war between Mutts and Pedigrees. The human cast – Lee Pace, William H. Macy and Judy Greer – and the rest of the impressive voice cast – Steve Coogan, Emma Stone, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Damon and Marlon Wayans, George Lopez (a name that is giving us nasty ‘Nam-style flashbacks to Beverly Hills Chihuahua) and, …

DreamWorks Barks At Doggy Day Care

29 October 2009 11:45 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

DreamWorks has gone barking mad for the script to – wait for it – Doggy Day Care.Written by Laurie Craig, the movie will be set in a day care for – yes! – dogs, and will show what the lovable mutts get up to when humans aren’t around to watch them. So, essentially, it’s Chewy Toy Story, with the hounds – presumably voiced by human actors – getting up to all sorts of allegedly hilarious activities. To which we shall say just one thing: does nobody remember the horror of Beverly Hills Chihuahua? Dear Lord, that film almost brought the world to the brink of war. Do we really want to risk tumbling over the precipice once more?Craig, it must be said, has form when it comes to this sort of thing – she wrote the talking parrot movie, Paulie, in 1998. She wrote the story of Doggy Day Care with two friends, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Julie Goldstein. …

Weekend Box Office - Where The Wild Things Are Grabs $32 Million. Paranormal Activity Breaks $20 Million

18 October 2009 11:41 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

People wanted to know “Where the Wild Things Are,” and it looks like they found out. The PG-rated boy-meets-beasts adventure took the top spot this weekend with $32 million in its first three days. The big story is still “Paranormal Activity” though, as it rises yet higher, landing at number three and proving to be one of the most successful indie roll-outs in recent memory. “The Stepfather” also performed better than a terrible movie should. Here’s the chart. The first number is what it made this weekend and the second is it’s total. More after the jump:

1 Where the Wild Things Are $32,470,000 - $32,470,000 2 Law Abiding Citizen            $21,250,000 - $21,250,000 3 Paranormal Activity            $20,163,000 - $33,717,000 4 Couples Retreat                 $17,949,000 - $63,339,000 5 The Stepfather (2009)        $12,300,000 - $12,300,000 6 Cloudy Meatballs                $8,100,000 -  $108,284,000 7 Zombieland                       $7,800,000 -   $60,823,000 8 Toy Story/Toy Story2 (3D)   $3,011,000 -   $28,594,000 9 Surrogates                        $1,922,000 -   $36,332,000 10 The Invention of Lying      $1,905,000 -  $15,495,000

Box office report: 'Couples Retreat' dominates; 'Paranormal Activity' surprises

11 October 2009 1:14 PM, PDT | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

Okay, so I was wrong. The Vince Vaughn-starrer Couples Retreat blew away every industry expectation, including my own, with a strong weekend gross of $35.3 million. The over-performing comedy comes as a welcome success to the folks at Universal, who have been battling a tough year at the box office and saw their two top movie executives leave their posts last week because of the hard times. The other industry surprise was the ridiculously impressive gross for the viral marketed phenomenon Paranormal Activity. Screening in just 159 theaters, Paramount's uber-scary horror flick grossed an estimated $7.1 million, putting its per-screen average at …

Cla$$war Comic Optioned for the Big Screen

6 October 2009 6:33 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Although Surrogates still hasn't come close to making back its $80 million budget, that hasn't stopped Mandeville Films from moving forward on a couple of other comic book movies. According to MTV [1], late last week they picked up the rights to Cla$$war, a comic book by Rob Williams, Trevor Hairsine and Travel Foreman from indie publisher Com.x [2]. The comic is a 6-issue mini-series that ran between 2002 and 2004, and was voted Best Independent Superhero Comic of 2003 by Wizard Magazine readers. The story revolves around a superhero known as The American who finds out a dark secret about the U.S. government that makes him realize that he's fighting for the wrong side. He ends up trying to bring the truth to the people, and must face off against the rest of his genetically-enhanced team of super soldiers in order to do it. Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman (Surrogates, Traitor, Beverly Hills Chihuahua) will produce. …

Weekend Report: 'Zombieland' Livens Up Horror Comedy Genre

5 October 2009 2:14 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The moribund horror comedy sub-genre showed a glimmer of vitality with the ripsnorting debut of Zombieland, which yanked $24.7 million out of around 3,900 screens at 3,036 sites. Despite Zombieland and the continued strength of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the Toy Story franchise, though, overall weekend business was off six percent from the same period last year, when Beverly Hills Chihuahua ruled, and on the low end for the timeframe.

In the realm of zombie movies, Zombieland had the second highest-grossing start on record behind the Dawn of the Dead remake, but, more importantly, it was the first horror comedy in recent memory to find significant theatrical success. The only horror comedies to claim greater initial attendance in the past two decades were the Scary Movie pictures, but they primarily appealed as spoofs. Failure is the norm, with movies like Jennifer's Body and Snakes on a Plane among the corpses. …

Comic book Cla$$War optioned by Surrogates team

5 October 2009 1:09 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

The makers of Surrogates, Beverly Hills Chihuahua and The Shaggy Dog remake have optioned a little-known comic book. Mandeville Films is the production company and the comic was called Cla$$War. It came out between the years of 2002 and 2004 and was published by an independent publisher called Com.x. Surrogates was based on a Top Cow graphic novel so Mandeville has a proven track record when it comes to mining comics for movies.

Cla$$War was about a superhero called the American, a superpowered man who is called upon by the United States military to pursue America's foreign policy around the world. The writer of the series, Rob Williams, likened his book to a political thriller with elements of Noam Chomsky but with superpowers.

Surrogates producers and Mandeville owners Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman will produce the new movie along with Rick Alexander. A writer hasn't been hired yet. …

Box Office Report: 'Zombieland' rises to the top with $25 million

4 October 2009 10:07 AM, PDT | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

Thanks in part to a killer trailer and strong word-of-mouth, Zombieland was alive and kicking at the box office, scaring up $25 million for the top spot, according to early estimates from Hollywood.com Box Office. The Sony Pictures release marks the best debut of star Woody Harrelson's career, and very well could kick off the umpteenth revival of the undead at your local cineplex. With its potent mix of big laughs and scares, the zombie comedy (or zomcom, as has quickly become the shorthand for the film in the blogosphere) looks to make a tidy killing in an October …

‘Youth In Revolt’ Gets Grounded to January 2010

17 September 2009 11:28 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Call it bad behavior or rethinking over at The Weinstein Company, but Youth in Revolt has been pushed back to January 15, 2010. The film starring Michael Cera was originally slated for a late October release (it's playing Toronto right now), but I just received word of the scheduling switch. Normally, this kind of move could signal a lack of faith in the film, but we're not dealing with an Oscar contender that's suddenly been pushed out of contention. With a lack of information, I spoke with local representative of the film who speculated it could be a number of things including a need to have more time to build a marketing campaign for the movie. The film has gotten decent reviews coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival, especially for Michael Cera stepping out of his character rut, so it very well might be that the change comes from a place of positivity instead of a lack …

'The Smurfs' Out of 2010 Slate

13 September 2009 11:08 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

The U.S. theatrical release of "The Smurfs" is facing a delay. Two weeks shy of Disney's revelation that "Tron Legacy" will be released on the same date as the planned release for "Smurfs", Sony Pictures came out with a new date, placing the CG-animation out of the studio's 2010 slate, as reported by Coming Soon.

Pulling out "Smurfs" from the crowded December 17, 2010 schedule, Sony pushed back the movie for about seven months to the July 29, 2011 release. With the new date given, this 3-D movie will be available in theaters a week after Marvel Studios releases "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011.

Sony's decision to move "Smurfs" has been predicted by many earlier since the studio has two feature films coming out on the same day, "Smurfs" and "The Green Hornet". Beside, if it stayed on the date, it will also have to compete with "Tron Legacy" and Warner Bros. Pictures

South American Dictator Digs Oliver Stone’s Latest Movie

6 September 2009 9:42 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Somewhere along the line, Hugo Chavez, the dictator President of Venezuela took time out from giving eight-hour speeches in order to watch South of the Border, the newest film by Oliver Stone. What was the all-too-compelling subject that caught his attention? Was it animated talking dogs? A retelling of the end of World War II with a baseball bat? Giant Fucking Robots? No, friends, the subject matter that got Chavez to tune in was Hugo Chavez. Why the film wasn't titled Hello, President! I do not know, but it would be ten times cooler if it was. Stone's flick features a ton of interviews with world leaders - specifically those from South American countries - all talking about Chavez, his history and effect on the region. According to several sources inside Italian media, they claim that the leader/subject matter liked the movie and may actually take Stone up on an invitation to come to the film's …

First CGI Smurf Is Equally As Shocked By Your Presence

1 September 2009 11:01 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The folks over at PVCBlue, a site dedicated to all things Smurf, have stumbled upon our very first look at one of the little guys from the upcoming Sony Pictures release Smurfs 3D. The project, which we've been telling you about for a while, is in the hands of director Raja Gosnell, who previously brought the world films such as Scooby-Doo, Big Momma's House and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. This will be the editor-turned-directors first real foray into the world of CG-animation and as you can expect, there's no pressure when it comes to bringing back our little blue friends. As you can see from the poster below, the marketing campaign for this movie is doomed by bad Scarface related puns, but the Smurfs themselves don't look too far removed from the original cartoon by Belgian cartoonist Peyo. Beyond the look, we don't know what this thing is going to be like, as …

Scanned and posted online by PVCBlue, the first look gives a taste of how the blue-colored character will look like in the feature film, along with a reminder that the movie will come out in theaters holiday 2010.

Little is known about the storyline of this family animation film. Such characters as Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the villainous Gargamel are expected to appear in it. David Stem and David Weiss, the writers of "Shrek 2" and "Shrek the Third", will provide the script alongside scribe Audrey Wells.

Barrymore, Perabo won't return for 'Chihuahua 2'

Last year's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" was undoubtedly one of the films I hated most in 2008, so I was obviously not thrilled when Walt Disney announced a sequel. I still can't get over the fact that the Raja Gosnell-directed mess pulled $94 million domestically.

From the folks at Moviehole comes word that neither Drew Barrymore nor Piper Perabo will be back for the sequel. Barrymore voiced a dog named Chloe in the first film, and Perabo played the lead human character, who set out to find the lost Chihuahua. …

Drew Barrymore, Piper Perabo Out For Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2

31 August 2009 5:59 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Yes, Beverly Hills Chihuahua did make money-- nearly $94 million, if you can believe it. But come on. If you were one of the voice stars of that movie, wouldn't you rather as few people know about your participation as possible? That might be just one reason that Drew Barrymore and Piper Perabo will apparently not be lending their voices to the sequel, according to Moviehole. They're not the only actors who won't be back, but the only ones who Moviehole's source cited by name. The sequel finds Barrymore's dog character Chloe getting hitched to Papi, voiced by George Lopez; naturally, they proceed to have a litter of kids. If I were to predict other people who won't be returning, I'd hope Jamie Lee Curtis might have something else going on, and maybe Edward James Olmos. Andy Garcia has been known to have better projects as well. Really, it would be …
