Ari Lehman's Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei Journal

14 December 2009 2:50 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Much as we'd like to, we can't always get to Every festival that happens. That's why we have friends like Ari Lehman, who travels extensively and who can bring us a blow-by-blow of the events as they happened. Here, then, is Ari's exclusive journal from his recent trip to Spain, where his band, First Jason, played the Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei, which is a really long name for one hell of a festival dedicated to horror movies and music. So without further ado...

Firstjason Festival de Cine de Terror de Molins de Rei Journal

Day 1 -

As we looked out of the airplane window, Barcelona lay sprawled out before us like an overflowing Pirate's chest that had been tipped into the shiny blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. I looked up to the north where I saw a dark, craggy mountaintop looming in the distance. …

The Descent Part 2 – Alex’s Review

30 November 2009 11:37 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Back in 2005 Neil Marshall unleashed The Descent upon the unsuspecting public. A savage little British horror film that ticked all the right boxes and was the perfect follow up to his impressive feature debut Dog Soldiers.

The Descent succeeded because it played out like a violent nightmare. The horror genre at that point had been suffocated by a string of un-scary big budget films and it was a joy to behold when all of a sudden we could sink our teeth into something genuinely scary again.

The 70s were the best years for horror. Films such as The Shining, The Omen and of course The Exorcist were brilliant for the genre and The Descent seemed to hark back to an era that cinema had lost. A horror film that was not only scary but also psychologically terrifying. A horror film that was as much about the characters as the shocks it delivered. …

Review: The Descent: Part 2

29 November 2009 6:44 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

In 2005 Neil Marshall’s imagine-if-Alien-were-set-in-a-cave feature The Descent scared the living daylights out of cinemagoers worldwide.  Lacking the bawdy humour of his werewolf masterpiece Dog Soldiers, it was nevertheless an honest to goodness horror film that pulled no punches and left no survivors.  Unless you watched the American cut.

The folk who decided to make The Descent: Part 2 clearly fall into the latter camp as they have picked up just before we left off with Sarah being kind of…alive.  For those among you who have never seen The Descent there is a brief recap after the jump:

Six girls go caving

Things go bump in the dark

Some of the girls die

Some of the girls kill some of the creatures

All of the girls die

The action picks up two days after the events of the first film (with Descent editor Jon Harris at the helm), the …

Children of the Corn (2009)

7 October 2009 8:22 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Children of The Corn Directed by Donald P. Borchers In what's being marketed as a "rebirth," Children of the Corn revisits the 80's classic that spawned 6 sequels and countless amounts of children to fear those long weekends in the country.  There's a trend happening again in the Horror genre. A trend that makes a strong case that children are complete creeps.  Not only are they capable of being annoying little brats but it seems that in every town, city, county or home, there's at least one twisted little monster, who in between playing with Trouble the pop-omatic bubble game dreams of popping your skull open and feasting upon the meat of your brain. Word of advice: Don't have kids and don't trust kids, they'll just try to kill you.  Children of the Corn, if anything, reaffirms these wise words as well as gives us the much needed visceral satisfaction of brutal violence towards kiddies, …

Martyn’s Top Ten Disturbing Films

17 September 2009 4:40 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

It is rarely highlighted what a strange habit and practice cinema-going is. Off we go to sit in a darkened room, usually with complete strangers, and watch something akin to a dream unfold before us. After all, Hollywood in particular, has been known as “The Dream Factory”. Why restrict it to Hollywood? Cinema = dreams. And as the subconscious plays havoc; dreams can turn into nightmares.

Audiences can laugh, cry and scream together. Each person maybe processing information in a variety of differing ways, yet, filmmakers employ a bag of tricks to invoke particular responses, at particular times.

Film experiences have a habit of becoming cherished, personal memories. It can achieve an ambiguous effect. Millions were astounded by Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, just as they were terrified by Jaws, seventeen years earlier. Alfred Hitchcock devised the infamous shower sequence in Psycho relying on suggestion, chocolate sauce, rapid editing and shrieking …

Trailer For The Descent: Part 2

5 September 2009 2:02 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Here at FilmShaft we love our trailers, hell we even have an entire section dedicated to them – little slices of cinematic thrills that should (hopefully) allude to the greatness of the whole. So naturally when we were sent the trailer for The Descent: Part 2 how could we resist?

The original you’ll remember, had people going crazy. An original plot in the horror genre is not something we see very often (more on that in a later article) so when audiences were plunged into the damp, claustrophobic caves of 2005’s The Descent, their fear was almost tangible.

Now with filmmakers are set to drag us back into the subterranean horror with The Descent: Part 2 the question is – are there any more surprises left?

Shauna Macdonald (Mutant Chronicles, The Descent) returns as Sarah, continuing the story of 2005’s hugely successful horror thriller The Descent, in which a group of …

4 September 2009 9:10 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Warner Bros. Pictures UK just sent over the latest trailer for Path Productions' sequel to Neil Marshall's 2005 film, The Descent (which we last reported on here).

Shauna Macdonald (Mutant Chronicles) returns as Sarah, continuing the story of the original film, in which a group of young women disappear during a caving trip in the Appalachian Mountains.

Check out the trailer below!

Emerging from the cave system alone, distraught and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. Sceptical about her account of events and convinced Sarah's psychosis hides far darker secrets, Sheriff Vaines (Gavan O'Herlihy) doesn't waste time. Along with his partner Rios (Krysten Cummings), and their cave rescue team Dan (Douglas Hodge), Greg (Joshua Dallas), and Cath (Anna Skellern), Vaines forces Sarah back into the caves to help the rescuers find her friends.

Alongside Macdonald, The Descent Part 2 also features Natalie Mendoza

'This is England' Sequel Straight to Small Screens

27 August 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

By next year, it'll be four years since Shane Meadows' This is England came out and stood out as a well-observed portrait of growing up of '80s-era England, so it seems fitting that any follow-up would also take place four years after the fact. According to Screen Daily, that's just the idea, as Meadows prepares to do a four-part series called "We Were Faces" for the UK's Channel Four which will chronicle the characters as their lives have progressed by 1986.

I haven't had the chance yet to see this summer's Somers Town, the latest from Meadows and young star Thomas Turgoose, but the latter has certainly made an impression for himself between England and Eden Lake. Between that one and Somers Town, he took home the London Film Critics' Young British Performer of the Year award, so he must be doing something right, and there's a unique pleasure …

Following the superb Red Road in 2006, Andrea Arnold’s latest feature continued the success by winning this year’s Jury Prize at Cannes. Starring newcomer Katie Jarvis and the remarkably versatile Michael Fassbender (recently seen in features as diverse as Hunger and Eden Lake), this should be another bastion of British realist cinema.

It’s slated for an 11th September UK theatrical release and you can see the trailer below the break… kind of Mike Leigh does Vicky Pollard?
