Sherlock Holmes Review

8 hours ago | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Schlock Holmes is too brutal. Call it instead The Adventure of the Da Vinci Code Knock-off or The Adventure of the Missing Ending. Either would be equally appropriate. This original story, which borrows heavily from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “canonical” tales, contains multiple Easter Eggs for Holmes fans but fails in the bigger picture: developing a credible narrative. Unduly influenced by both comic books and The Da Vinci Code, Guy Ritchie’s “re-interpretation” of Holmes feels more spastic than kinetic. The camera rarely stops moving and, when it does, the weaknesses of the script become apparent. Conan Doyle wrote 60 adventures starring his famous detective (56 short stories, four novels). Some were preposterous, but none were quite as silly as this one, which at times feels more like overwrought fan fiction than a fully developed Sherlock Holmes tale…read more [ReelViews]

Mark Strong on the Tone of Kick-Ass, Sherlock Holmes and Robin Hood

10 hours ago | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Actor Mark Strong has been making the rounds recently in support of his latest movie, Sherlock Holmes, but he also has starring roles in three other upcoming genre pictures: Robin Hood, Kick-Ass, and John Carter of Mars. In a new interview with CinemaBlend, Strong spoke about how important it is for an actor to understand the tone movie's director is looking for.

Strong reunited with the RocknRolla director, Guy Ritchie, for Sherlock Holmes, in which he plays the villain Lord Blackwood. Strong said that his portrayal of the character depended very much on the tone Ritchie wanted and how the titular star of the movie, Robert Downey Jr., approached the role of Holmes.

We had to know exactly what that tone was, and I think Guy certainly had an inkling of it, and Robert certainly had an inkling, and brought what he does to the film. He's very mischievous, Robert, »

'Sherlock Holmes' review #2 (3/5) - Packs a lot of punch.

18 hours ago | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

If you want your Sherlock Holmes stuffy and stately, the new film about him will not be for you. But if you want a rollicking good time, “Sherlock Holmes” will certainly do the trick. Director Guy Ritchie (“RocknRolla”, “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”) was giving the Herculean task about bringing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes back to the big screen. Ritchie brings his usual high energy and snappy dialogue to the fare. You won’t be bored by what is on the screen. Robert Downey Jr. plays the famous English detective with rumpled intensity. Ritchie doesn’t hold back on showing Holmes with his flaws. Holmes is never shown using drugs, but it is clear that he is on occasion under the influence. Holmes also abhors cleanliness unless it is absolutely necessary. This portrayal makes him more human and more relatable. The costume designer did Downey Jr. »

'Sherlock Holmes' Doesn't Suck

23 December 2009 10:45 AM, PST | www.actressarchives.com | See recent Actress Archives news »

We'll admit that our hopes for Guy Ritchie's latest flick, "Sherlock Holmes" were less than high. Can you blame us? Ritchie kind of fell off the map after 2000's "Snatch." Uh, "Swept Away?" "Revolver?" "RocknRolla?" Anyone? Sorry, Guy, we're usually rooting for you, but you haven't given us much to work with lately. So, we cringed and expected the worst with "Sherlock Holmes," even with the all-star cast of Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams with Mark Strong as a charismatic villain. But it looks like it's not as God-awful as we expected. Maybe Ritchie needed to take a break from writing the same movie over and over aga »

Mark Strong on Sherlock Holmes, Peter Weir’s The Way Back, The Guard and Eagle Of The Ninth

22 December 2009 10:11 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

About a week ago, I got to speak to an actor whose work I really admire: Mark Strong (IMDb resume).  While many of you might not know his name, if you ever saw Body of Lies, he played a character named Hani Salaam and he was the best performance in the film.  Since then, Strong has booked a ton of very high profile gigs in some of Hollywood’s biggest movies.  Clearly people noticed his work and as a fan, I’m excited to see him in more movies.

Anyway, the reason I got to speak with him is he plays the villainous Lord Blackwood in director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes.  During out conversation we discussed the promotional process for Sherlock Holmes and what he’s had to do, working for Guy Ritchie again, what he did to prepare for the role, and so much more.

And for fans of Peter Weir, »

Movie Review: The Young Victoria (2009)

18 December 2009 3:14 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend in The Young Victoria

Photo: Apparition The Young Victoria is an excellent film, but it's missing a conclusion. The script penned by Julian Fellowes ends just when it seems it should be getting to the final act of the story of the up-and-down first years of Queen Victoria's rule. Fellowes gets us over a hill only to feed us text to take us down the other side. It's like investing in the stock market and watching your stock climb only to have it earn you hundreds instead of thousands when you cash out. Sure, you're a little richer, but the promise was much greater than the ultimate payoff.

For as melancholy as the film opens, The Young Victoria is actually quite the entertaining royal period piece as it introduces us to 17-year-old Princess Victoria (Emily Blunt) describing her "palace as a prison" while she sits in waiting. »

It's a souped-up Victorian crime romp with Holmes and Watson reinvented as wisecracking action heroes

It is, as the great sleuth might have said, a three-pipe problem. How does cackling master-criminal Guy Ritchie keep getting away with it? How on earth did he manage to perpetrate those two egregious crimes Revolver and RocknRolla without getting his collar felt?

This lordly super-villain is well known as a master of disguise, donning a pearly cap and smearing himself with odorous jellied eels to pass as a cockney rapscallion, in which garb this patrician scofflaw carries out his dastardly acts in film studios, before changing back into tweeds and vanishing away to his country estate.

Now he has managed to steal hours of precious time belonging to cinemagoers everywhere for his latest silly escapade. It's a souped-up Victorian crime romp with Holmes and Watson reinvented as wisecracking action heroes, played by Robert Downey Jr »

Out doing promotion for "Sherlock Holmes", British thesp Mark Strong ("Body of Lies," "Rocknrolla") tells Cinema Blend that most of his work on the upcoming "John Carter of Mars" film will not involve much CG.

"My character doesn't actually get involved in any of the motion-capture stuff. All the stuff is live action. Although I can shift my shape, so I have to be photographed by a 360-degree camera. I can adapt into anything. That's going to be my particular talent" says Strong who plays Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems.

He adds that "there's some filming in Utah, but most of it is in a studio outside of London". Joining him are the likes of Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Polly Walker, Thomas Haden Church and James Purefoy.

Andrew Stanton helms the project currently scheduled for a Summer 2012 release. »

Director Guy Ritchie Exclusive Interview Sherlock Holmes

16 December 2009 2:39 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Just a few days ago I was in London.  I was over in the United Kingdom because that’s where Warner Bros. was promoting their big Christmas Day release, Sherlock Holmes.  As I’ve said many times, I think the studio is sitting on a winning lottery ticket, as everyone I know that’s seen the movie has loved it - myself included.

What’s great about the film is it reminds me of the first Indiana Jones movie, as it starts with a big action sequence and immediately you’re in the world of Sherlock Holmes.  No seeing Holmes as a boy.  No needless explanations of why he solves crimes.  Instead, director Guy Ritchie has crafted a big Hollywood movie that audiences around the world are going to have fun watching.  I think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be very happy with the results.

Anyway, at the big press junket this past weekend, »

Sherlock Holmes Giveaway

Opening on Christmas Day is director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes.  As I have said a few times, I saw the film and thought it was awesome.  Great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved.  Amazing chemistry between Jude Law and Downey Jr. A third act that doesn’t suck.  Action scenes that sell why Sherlock Holmes is Sherlock Holmes.  But more than anything, the film is just a lot of fun.  Cannot recommend it enough.

So to help promote the film, we’ve been given a bunch of cool Sherlock Holmes swag to giveaway.  If you’d like to get any of it, hit the jump to see how to enter and take a look at the prizing.  And if you’d like to get a sneak peak at Sherlock Holmes right now, here’s a link to eight clips from the film.

New poster for Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘Inception’ arrives

16 December 2009 5:00 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Presenting the poster for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming cerebral thriller Inception. The poster was the prize on the film’s official site after you complete a maze.

It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page (Juno), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), Marion Cotillard (Nine), Joseph Gordon Levitt ((500) Days of Summer), Tom Hardy (RocknRolla), Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Red Eye), Tom Berenger and Michael Caine.

Nolan’s new film is viewed as a “break” before he starts work on a third entry in the highly popular (and profitable) Batman series, which has seen no official movement. Ziltch.

This is nothing new for the director, who rejected outcries from rabid Bat-fans wanting a quick sequel to Batman Begins and instead chose to helm The Prestige. As fans quickly learned, the break between films didn’t hinder the series as The Dark Knight became the second biggest film in history and landed an Academy Award »

Sherlock Holmes | Film review

Cinematic mystery that baffles in all the wrong ways

What a mysterious puzzle Guy Ritchie's new film presents. This time last year, he looked like a man in need of a miracle. The one-time saviour of British cinema's movie, the damp gangster squib RocknRolla, took under $6m in the Us. Yet here he is, launching what looks like his very own period action superhero franchise. And he's been handed a rumoured $80m to blow on it.

But Sherlock Holmes is high-end hack work. It could have been made by anyone. There's the odd Ritchie-ism, like crunchy slo-mo in the fight scenes, but he was, presumably, brought on board for reasons not wholly to do with his cinematic style.

Good news for those Holmes purists appalled by the prospect of literature's most cerebral sleuth getting a geezer makeover, but bad news for the rest of us: Sherlock Holmes isn't even a magnificent mistake. »

Nine New Sherlock Holmes Clips!

I know that we've already posted an update for Sherlock Holmes only about an hour back featuring reviews, but I couldn't pass up nine new clips for the film.

Movie Clips: Sherlock Holmes

The good people at TrailerAddict have posted the first nine movie clips for Sherlock Holmes and each of them has their moments. I for one am so glad that Guy Ritchie plucked Mark Strong from his RocknRolla cast, as the actor makes the perfect villain. Rachel McAdams also looks incredibly hot, but I don't know if that compares with the fun banter between Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law »

8 Movie Clips from Sherlock Holmes Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law

14 December 2009 12:57 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

With director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes getting released on Christmas Day, Warner Bros. has just released eight clips from the movie.  While I always post whatever clips I’m given from the studios, I’m actually going to recommend not watching the clips.  The reason is, the less you see from the movie, the more you’re going to enjoy it.  When I went into the press screening last week, I had only seen the trailer, so I was able to watch the movie without knowing what was going to happen.  I strongly recommend doing the same thing as Sherlock Holmes is an awesome, fun adventure that I think everyone is going to love.

As I said when I posted the 37 images a few days ago:  Even though I love to nitpick movies, this is one of the rare films that I walked out completely satisfied.  Great script. Fantastic performances from everyone involved. »

Sherlock Holmes, the ... Superhero?

14 December 2009 1:08 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

If you think May's Iron Man 2 debut is the next time you'll see Robert Downey, Jr. portraying a superhero on screen, you're wrong, according to the actor. Downey, Jr. recently described Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as "the first action duo," and also said in a new Warner Bros. press release that Holmes is the predecessor to heroes such as Superman, Batman, and Iron Man.

He was probably the first superhero, an intellectual superhero. He was, and probably still is, one of the most recognizable icons on Earth, so much so that a lot of people actually thought that Sherlock Holmes was a real person. The more you look into Arthur Conan Doyle's books, the more you see what a rich character Sherlock Holmes is. He's very adept at so many things: He plays violin, he's a martial artist, a boxer, an expert single stick fighter and a swordsman of sorts. »
