Sally Hawkins Finally Getting Cast In More Roles

5 November 2009 6:18 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Since she first came to the attention of many moviegoers (like myself) with her completely loony and lovable performance in Happy-Go-Lucky last year, Sally Hawkins has been pretty much missing from the movie scene. She has a tiny, tiny scene in An Education, and will be in Never Let Me Go with Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley next year, but thus far hasn't done that post-buzz overexposure-- and thank God for that. In keeping with her tendency to take roles in tiny indies, Hawkins is moving on to Dirty Girl, the directorial debut from Abe Sylvia about two teenagers-- a trampy girl and a overweight gay boy-- who team up to find the girl's real father. Variety writes that Hawkins and William H. Macy have signed on, though it doesn't say how they'll fit into the story. The movie already stars Lisa Kudrow along with Juno Temple and Jeremy Dozier, …

Tiff 09: Clips and poster for The Disappearance Of Alice Creed

16 September 2009 2:54 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

While we still don't have a trailer for this flick, which we've heard great things about, 3 clips have popped up online. The reviews have been good but very little has come out about the film itself, other then that the entire film is just 3 actors in a room, and it's best going in blind.

From the Tiff website:

Brisk, brutal and effective – that describes the shocker opening of The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Two men fortify a nondescript British apartment so it can serve as a prison, and then kidnap a woman and tie her to a bed. Before there's even time to react, we're plunged into a very nasty situation – but not a simple one.

The brilliance of J Blakeson's debut lies in how it parses out information and ratchets up the stakes with every scene. Who are these two men? Why have they kidnapped Alice? What is their relationship to each other, …

The Disappearance of Alice Creed's Eddie Marsan and Martin Compston: The Movieline Interview

14 September 2009 12:45 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

One of those pleasant gems you hope to stumble upon at any film festival, The Disappearance of Alice Creed is a wonderfully entertaining little thriller from British screenwriter and first-time director, J Blakeson. Set almost entirely in an enclosed apartment, Blakeson's story takes a simple premise -- "So you've kidnapped a beautiful heiress. Now what?" -- and wrings out of it a darkly humorous and utterly unpredictable tale of greed gone wrong, with shades of Rope, Shallow Grave and Deathtrap. The titular heiress is played by Quantum of Solace star Gemma Arterton, who squeezed in this film between her two upcoming blockbusters, Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans. Rounding out the triangle are the two kidnappers, the elder and more volatile man played by Eddie Marsan -- star of Mike Leigh's Vera Drake and Happy-Go-Lucky and Will Smith's super-nemesis in Hancock -- and the younger played by Martin Compston, …

London Calling: Mike Leigh Shooting for 2010

27 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- Working on back to back Mike Leigh films must be like the back to school experience. You are surrounded by friends you made the year film before. I don't think he has gone from one film to the next without rehiring some of the same cast - and as Screen Daily points out, Leigh who begins filming with a cast of twelve this week, has ten returning actors/actresses (only David Bradley and Stuart McQuarrie are first timers). Much like how Woody Allen commences a new project, we have no title to work with, and no plot details. What we do know is that Sally Hawkins has spread her wings and won't be returning, and that the Vera Drake pairing of Imelda Staunton and Jim Broadbent are top-lining. I'd be curious to know if Leigh will return to the comedy format. Filming on the untitled project will takes place in London for nine weeks, …

Filming Starts On Mike Leigh's Latest

27 August 2009 1:36 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Shooting has begun, in London, on the masterful Mike Leigh’s new movie – his first since last year’s acclaimed Happy-Go-Lucky.As ever, no title has been revealed for the movie, nor a storyline, but the cast has been announced, and it’s chock-full of Leigh regulars. Imelda Staunton, Jim Broadbent, Phil Davis and Lesley Manville are all returning for the unique Leigh experience (where, traditionally, he workshops characters with the actors, forming a screenplay and story from the results).Only David Bradley – Filch in the Harry Potter movies – and Stuart McQuarrie are making their Leigh debuts. It’s the first film for Leigh since the death of his long-time producing partner, Simon Channing-Williams, in April of this year. The new movie will be produced Georgina Lowe, while Focus Features are co-financing with Film 4 and The UK Film Council’s Premiere Fund.Shooting began yesterday and will continue for the …

Mike Leigh is Up to His Same Old Tricks

27 August 2009 12:04 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Mike Leigh is an interesting writer/director. For example, with his Oscar-nominated film Happy-Go-Lucky he worked one-on-one with star Sally Hawkins to create her character as he has been quoted saying he begins his films with nothing more than an idea and through work with the actors, research and improvisation a story and the characters begin to emerge. When I spoke with him last October I mentioned how hard it must be to get funding for a film with no script, he told me, "It always is. I'm the guy with no script, I won't talk about casting and I won't talk about the content. You give us the money and we go away and make the film and don't interfere with us. Not all backers are interested in that proposition." Well, he's got the money and he's back to work. Gregg Kilday at The Hollywood Reporter brings word that …

Mike Leigh Starts Shooting His Next Project in London

26 August 2009 7:41 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

English filmmaker Mike Leigh has started production on his next new film following the Oscar nominated film Happy-Go-Lucky, which received heaps of critical acclaim. The project is untitled and Leigh is keeping a lid on plot details (much like Woody Allen), but we do know who's in the cast: Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Taking Woodstock), Jim Broadbent (Hot Fuzz, The Damned United, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), Philip Davis (Vera Drake, Cassandra's Dream), David Bradley (Filch in Harry Potter) and Stuart McQuarrie (28 Days Later, "The Bill"). Quite an impressive English cast. Many of Leigh's regular crew also are on board as well, including Oscar nominated cinematographer Dick Pope (The Illusionist, Happy-Go-Lucky), editor Jon Gregory, casting director Nina Gold, costume designer Jacqueline Durran and hair and make-up supervisor Chrissie Blundell. I wish we had more to tell you about this, but that's all their …

First look: The Disappearance Of Alice Creed

20 August 2009 1:56 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

We've heard good things about this UK flick which has a short synopsis of: "Two men, an empty apartment, a millionaire's daughter: greed, deception and survival." and I was keeping an eye on it before it was even announced at Tiff.. but as of yet we only have one still, courtesy of the Tiff website where Alice will be premiering. Andrea Riseborough Joins Brighton Rock

13 August 2009 12:38 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Andrea Riseborough has joined Sam Riley in Brighton Rock, BBC Films' adaptation of the Graham Greene novel. This is, of course, the second time Greene's crime classic has been brought to the screen, with Richard Attenborough making such a memorable turn as sinewy, sinister small-town hoodlum Pinkie Brown in the 1947 version. This time around hoodlum honours go to Riley, with Riseborough (best known for Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky and telly period drama The Devil's Whore) playing the waitress who blackmails him into marrying her.Brighton Rock marks the directorial debut of Rowan (son of Roland) Joffé, up until now best known for his 28 Weeks Later screenplay. Filming starts this autumn.Riseborough, meanwhile, is next up in another literary adaption, appearing alongside Keira Knightley in Mark Romanek's adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. She follows that with a turn in the not-as-saucy-as-it-sounds We Want Sex, a …

Terrific Trailers: 'Happy-Go-Lucky'

14 July 2009 11:15 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I have a theory that whether you find Poppy in Happy-Go-Lucky utterly annoying or a joy and an inspiration offers an interesting insight to your personality. I once declared in a fit of hyperbole that anyone who didn't love Happy-Go-Lucky or The Brothers Bloom was not anyone I wanted to associate with. I might have also insinuated such people didn't have a soul. And while those statements were rather hasty, I stand by my theory about Poppy, played by Sally Hawkins Maybe you sympathize with Eddie Marsan's angry and needy driving instructor character and think she should have done more to help him. Maybe you think Poppy is another insipid incarnation of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Or maybe you just like structured plots. Me, I was totally happy to trip along with Poppy on her adventures, no matter how nonsensical or ill-advised.

134 New Names Invited to Join the Academy

1 July 2009 1:08 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's …

Cannes 2009: Rt Interview - Sally Hawkins on We Want Sex

The Golden Globe seems to have done Sally Hawkins well. After winning the award for her part in Mike Leigh's hilarious Happy-Go-Lucky, having her name attached to any project seems to have become an instant arbiter of interest. As we meet with Hawkins in Cannes, where she's announcing her role in new film We Want Sex, due to start shooting soon, she's fielding interest from all the glossies as well as the usual selection of film mags and broadsheets -- a sure sign of a star in the making. Tribeca, Marianne, Supermodels

The Eclipse.

I'm on assignment for Tribeca covering Q & As over the next few days, so last night I saw the ghost story The Eclipse from playwright Conor MacPherson. Calling it a ghost story is reductive but it's the easiest hook to get your attention. The new film is juggling a lot of balls at once (grief drama, love story, literary comedy, character study) and it's coming to a theater new you just as soon as... well, you never know with these festival films. But the audience really liked it so maybe distribution won't be that far away. John Patrick Shanley (Doubt) was a few rows behind me. I guess these playwrights eye each other like hawks.

And two celebrity sightings to tell you about. Before leaving Nashville I had a chat with Marianne Jean-Baptiste at the festival after-party downtown. She was in great humor and much shorter than I expected her to be. …

Casting Bites: Kristen Bell, Sally Hawkins, and P Diddy

Three casting bites, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter:

She may have wowed us all with her kickass teen detective on Veronica Mars, but her big-screen work continues to lack the same verve. On the heels of When in Rome and Couples Retreat, Kristen Bell has signed on to Andy Fickman's You Again. She'll play a woman who finds out that her brother is gearing up to marry the evil girl who made her years in high school a living hell. Not happy with the idea, she tries to find a way to reveal the girl's true evilness to her brother. Aren't there any mysteries to solve? Joel Silver, let Rob Thomas make the film. Bell needs better!

Meanwhile, the wonderful Sally Hawkins, the woman behind Happy-Go-Lucky, has grabbed herself a sci-fi gig. Hawkins, along with Charlotte Rampling, Nathalie Richard, and Andrea Riseborough, have signed onto Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go. …
