Josh Brolin in 'Men in Black 3'?!!?!?!

9 December 2009 6:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Sign me up for this rumor. In fact, if this is right, you can bet your bottom dollar that my arse will be in the theater come the first midnight screening. According to the Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex Blog, Josh Brolin is being considered for a lead role in Men in Black 3.

While just about any lead role would make me happy, it looks like there are a few possibilities under consideration. The rumor mill says that Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K might pass the torch over to Brolin as Will Smith's new Agent J partner, or he might play a young Agent K, or be someone else entirely. The project already has a writer and (tentative) director, but it has yet to get the full green light ... but how can it not if Brolin signs on?

While Brolin is a very talented actor, there is nothing …

Deneen Melody ('Master's Devils', 'Dark Hallways')

7 December 2009 8:42 PM, PST | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

-Interview by Nic Brown-

The saying goes "Don't mess with Texas!" and although she may be based out of Chicago now, you'd still be well advised not to mess with native Texan Deneen Melody! She's played everything from an assassin to one of the devil's daughters. This former ballerina-turned-horror actress is not just an actress; she's also a model who's learning to do her own stunt work! Now Deneen is taking a break from learning how to fight on screen to talk with Pretty Scary about her new projects, why she gave up ballet, and why some people may call her a nerd (but not to her face, remember she's learning to fight!)...

Deneen, how did you get your start as an actress?

Well, before I got into film, I was actually a ballet dancer. Unfortunately, when I was 16, I broke my left foot during a performance. It was …

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Shorts’ Long on Comic Chaos, Short on Charm

3 December 2009 5:57 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Robert Rodriguez is a one-man moviemaking machine. He’s always looking for the fastest and most cost-effective ways for getting his work out to the public. His success story, memorably chronicled in the book “Rebel Without a Crew,” is genuinely inspiring, yet his films often fail to resonate as anything other than exercises in design. In his latest film, he comes up with two multi-purpose objects (a man-made product, “the black box,” and a magical “wishing rock”) that can do pretty much anything his characters want them to do. They represent the central problem in Rodriguez’s work: he seems to think that since digital filmmaking can allow him to do anything, he should, without ever thinking it through.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

Thus, the public is treated to a shapeless, rambling bore like “Shorts,” which feels like it was slapped together in Rodriguez’s garage. Its story is told out …

[DVD Review] Shorts

1 December 2009 1:00 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When he isn’t skulking around the dark and blood-splattered alleyways of the Mexican underworld, director Robert Rodriguez runs a nice, profitable sideline in garish, high-energy kid flicks. A quick Read of his resume: Spy Kids, Once upon a time in Mexico, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl, Planet Terror, Shorts, and next up Machette, can give the impression the helmer is the ultimate proponent of the “one for them, one for me” school of filmmaking. Except, of course, they’re all for him. Once again he cheerfully does the whole shebang; writer, producer, handling the score, overseeing the effects, presumably on a diet of enough sugar to single-handedly raise the Gdp of Brazil. Perhaps he just likes the change of pace.

With that in mind this is yet another high-concept, pre-teen wish-fulfillment fantasy that finds the corporate controlled suburb of Black Falls thrown into colorful CGI chaos when …

Hot Twin Electra Avellan Chats Machete

19 November 2009 | Horror Asylum | See recent Horror Asylum news »

If you haven't yet been introduced to the ultra sexy 'babysitter twins' from 'Planet Terror' then I'm afraid sir, you haven't lived! The Avellan Twins (Elise and Electra) first featured in Robert Rodriguez's zombie horror back in 2005 and now they're scheduled to appear as Sexy Nurse #1 and 2 in his new project 'Machete' (based on his faux trailer in his Grindhouse project, starring Danny Trejo in the title role). A Conversation with MacHete's Electra Avellan

16 November 2009 11:10 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

I was fortunate enough to meet Electra Avellan at the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida recently, and she was kind enough to talk with me about her career, inspirations, favorite movies and actors, and also what it's like to be a part of one of the most famous film families working in cinema today.

Jason Anders/Fangoria: So let's talk about the new film you will be appearing in, Machete, which will be directed by Robert Rodriguez; the film is based on the fake movie trailer of the same name from the Grindhouse feature film, and will star Danny Trejo supported by an all-star cast. What can you tell me about the production of this film, and also, what is it like working with family members such as Robert and your sister Elise on set?

Electra Avellan: I can't talk much about the production of the film. Not yet. …

DVD Review: Shorts

15 November 2009 3:47 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Today I was sent a screener of ‘Shorts’, the new Robert Rodriguez film, and was lucky enough to go feed my inner child and watch it.

Shorts is another children’s movie by the versatile director who made such violent classics as Planet Terror, Dusk till Dawn, Desperado and Sin City and also the creator of well regarded children’s movies Spy Kids 1-3 and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

I haven’t seen any of Rodriguez’s children films but I have always wanted to have an excuse to see one, and this was my chance to see what this brilliant director can do with this genre.

I didn’t know what to expect from Shorts, Desperado for kids? or a regular childish story with kiddie humour and lots of fart jokes? Obviously it was no Desperado but gladly it wasn’t entirely a regular kiddie film either. …

Jessica Alba Lays Down The Law In The First Machete Poster

5 November 2009 1:21 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I.m excited about Machete in a way that.s almost impossible to explain to anyone who doesn.t rate Planet Terror as one of their favorite zombie movies. Scratch that, most of you haven.t even seen Planet Terror, judging from the scant handful of people who showed up for the greatness of Grindhouse. I have a feeling that Robert Rodriguez.s Machete will fare better. It doesn.t hurt that it stars, among others, Jessica Alba. In fact Alba, as Sartana, is the first Machete character to get a real teaser poster. You.d think the first one would have been of Machete, but once you look at tight-jeans, white tank top Alba ready to lay down the law, you.ll be glad she went first. Exclusive: Electra Avellan Talks 'Machete'

At last night's red carpet premiere of Black Waters of Echo's Pond, we caught up with one of the film's stars, Electra Avellan (a.k.a. one half of Planet Terror's Crazy Babysitter Twins), who told us about her role in Robert Rodriguez's upcoming Machete. Based on the faux trailer in Grindhouse, Machete will again see Danny Trejo's title character unleashing hell on earth upon corrupt politicians and various other ne'er-do-wells. Find out what Avellan told us about the film after the jump. Regarding the amount of humor that will be present in Machete (as opposed to drama), Avellan remarked, "In my opinion, I'm not speaking for Robert at all, this movie is taken more seriously [than] …

Five Cool Movies For Spring 2010

23 October 2009 3:12 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It’s a slow week for movie releases, with Fantastic Mr. Fox the only release of note in the UK, along with Cirque Du Freak. Most of the remaining big films this year are due out in November and December.

So, with the big winter films already hyped to the max, and with Iron Man 2, Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood being the highly anticipated movies this Spring, I thought i’d take a look at some Spring movies that maybe aren’t getting the attention they deserve – The Losers, Green Zone, A Couple of Dicks, Machete and Kick-Ass. Note, this is a list of the films i’m personally looking forward to, so you won’t necessarily agree with me…

The Losers

When is it? – 9th April.

Where is it? – Currently filming in Puerto Rico

Who is it? – Directed by Sylvain White, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, …

Fall Frights: Grindhouse (Film Review)

20 October 2009 1:16 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 04/01/2007

In the Robert Rodriguez-scripted/directed first of its two conjoined movies, Grindhouse is the ultimate sugar rush for horror fans, a high-calorie, low-nutrition blast of cheap thrills wrought on a big budget. In the second, Quentin Tarantino upends the framework and traditions of exploitation fare to craft a film that’s just as much a showcase for his gift of (writing) gab as it is for action. And in both Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, a love and respect shines through for the B-movie tradition that too many others “homage” with snarky irony. The wholeheartedness with which they express their devotion to the form almost amounts to a kind of innocence, and for all the explicit mayhem on screen, …

From 'Spinal Tap' to 'Machete' to 'Black Dynamite': My favorite movie parodies put the machete to reality

16 October 2009 3:27 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

When you think about movie parodies -- we could be talking Airplane!, the Austin Powers films, or one of those great old Mad magazine satires, which were really the first place that a lot of us, as kids, got to "see" movies made for adults -- the key to a terrific send-up would seem to be the art of exaggeration, pure and simple. But there’s a particular brand of cinematic parody that I love, at this point, almost more than any other. And though it does employ the art of exaggeration (in very, very deadpan ways), far more than that, …

Lindsay Lohan Drama, 'Predators' And Fred Durst Scares Fred Durst In Today's Twitter-Wood

Sometimes when director and Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst stares into the Internet, the Internet stares back, and when you see what he saw, I think you'll understand why I selected this image as the Twitter Pic of the Day. Plus, if you're still contemplating Halloween costumes for this year, there's some golden inspiration awaiting you.

Twitter-Wood saw some drama in addition to the horror today, though, as Lindsay Lohan vented frustrations about communicating with Samantha Ronson. Those tweets are posted below along with Robert Rodriguez's first-day appraisal of "Predators" filming, David Slade's expectations for "Eclipse" today and Jon Favreau's in-house reenactment of "Couples Retreat." All of that and more lurks below in the Twitter-Wood report for October 13, 2009.

EW's "25 Best Zombie Movies of All Time"

10 October 2009 10:16 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Lists can be fun if I don't take them seriously.  I always like to see how other people compile "top" or "best of's," and it's cool to disagree with placements, omissions and inclusions.  As a zombie lover, I wanted to have a great time with Entertainment Weekly's "25 Best Zombie Movies of All Time."  Alas, as enjoyable as this one was for me to gloss over, I was majorly let down by two issues with the list.  Allow me to explain, as I prove that I took this list too seriously.

Any list is only as good as the person who assembles it.  And whoever assembled this one followed a regrettable trend common in EW's lists:  including recent material that may be hot now, but likely has no place on this list in the long run.  Planet Terror was a fun ride and I know how popular the underground [Rec] is, but …

Auto of the week: Cadillac Escalade from Zombieland

6 October 2009 5:01 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

It certainly helps to be creative when killing zombies. Shaun (Simon Pegg) and buddy Ed (Nick Frost) went for the cricket bat and garden shovel options (apparently LP records thrown at the head don’t work) in Shaun of the Dead, while Cherry (Rose McGowan) preferred to gun them down with the M4 carbine she used as a leg substitute in Planet Terror. Though there are countless ways to do the job, just look at Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), the Twinkie-obsessed anti-hero in new horror comedy Zombieland. He and his fellow survivors, trying to forage a life in the zombie inhabited post-apocalyptic world, are very imaginative in their zombie-killing duties, using everything from pianos to banjos and one of his favourite tools is his Cadillac Escalade, this week’s auto spot. …
