Sophie's Revenge review

19 December 2009 11:02 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

The dark side of mainland China's domestic film industry flexing its muscles on the world stage ('We can too compete') is when it takes Hollywood self-indulgence and refines it into something many times worse. Witness Eva Jin's Sophie's Revenge, where superstar Zhang Ziyi (The Banquet, 2046) tries her hand at daffy romantic comedy - the resulting disaster is an odious misfire on just about every level and a definite front runner for worst film of 2009.

Zhang (who also produced) clearly sees the film as some kind of glossy hybrid of Jeunet & Caro whimsy paired off with the mass-market appeal Meg Ryan or Sandra Bullock used to have. The very first scene is a flight of fantasy, her eponymous artist imagining a television interview as wartime film noir interrogation.

Her doting public want to know what the inspiration behind her new comic 'The Love Handbook' was. Cue the film as lengthy flashback, …

TV plays it by the book

22 November 2009 11:44 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Broadcasters are taking the safe option by commissioning literary adaptations that guarantee an audience

"In these difficult times there's a little more security in adapting a book than in commissioning an original script," says Liza Marshall, head of drama at Channel 4 and soon to be head of film and TV at Ridley Scott's production company, Scott Free. "Although you couldn't run your drama department purely from the bookshop, books do have an epic scope and a strong author's vision which can really help a channel in tough times."

The rest of the TV industry seems to agree. The next six months sees the small screen looking like a branch of Borders. Sky1 is filming Chris Ryan's Sas thriller Strike Back for transmission next April, alongside a version of Terry Pratchett's Going Postal. The second of its Martina Cole adaptations, The Graft, goes out next summer, while David Morrissey

Last week we wrote that Johns Hopkins would welcome the crew of "The Social Network" this week as they'd be filming in front of some of the dorms. Ciff 2009: The winners! And our reviews

Tina Mabry's "Mississippi Damned," an independent American production, won the Gold Hugo as the best film in the 2009 Chicago International Film Festival, and added Gold Plaques for best supporting actress (Jossie Thacker) and best screenplay (Mabry). It tells the harrowing story of three black children growing up in rural Mississippi in circumstances of violence and addiction. The film's trailer and an interview with Mabry are linked at the bottom.

The win came over a crowed field of competitors from all over the world, many of them with much larger budgets. The other big winner at the Pump Room of the Ambassador East awards ceremony Saturday evening was by veteran master Marco Bellocchio of Italy, who won the Silver Hugo as best director for "Vincere," the story of Mussolini's younger brother. Giovanna Mezzogiorno and Filippo Timi won Silver Hugos as best actress and actor, …

Eisenberg, Timberlake and Garfield are Friends with Fincher's 'Facebook'

23 September 2009 12:13 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I was just telling someone the other night how I think Justin Timberlake is a solid actor, but of course that is based on very little. I thought he was the best part of Alpha Dog and he did well in Black Snake Moan, outside of Craig Brewer's decision to leave in that entire final scene, but I can hardly blame that on him. So, it comes with very little surprise that Timberlake along with Adventureland's Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield (Boy A, Lions for Lambs) have joined the cast of David Fincher's Facebook feature The Social Network. Mike Fleming at Variety confirms earlier reports saying Eisenberg will play founder Mark Zuckerberg, Timberlake will play Sean Parker, the Napster co-founder who became Facebook's founding president, and Garfield will play Eduardo Saverin, the Facebook co-founder who fell out with Zuckerberg as the social network became a financial juggernaut. …

Timberlake, Eisenberg Accept Facebook Movie’s Friend Request

22 September 2009 11:06 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Aaron Sorkin is writing the script, David Fincher will be seated in the director's chair, and now The Social Network, otherwise known as "The Facebook Movie," is getting a surprisingly solid cast of leading men. Is there no end to how oddly impressive this project will become? No end to the names that will sign on, sign up and accept the invite to part of one of the most talked about movies of the next 12 months? Confirming previous rumors, Variety is reporting tonight that the Columbia Pictures produced film has found its three male leads. Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland, Zombieland) will play Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (a brilliant bit of casting, if you ask me); Justin Timberlake will play Sean Parker, the Napster co-founder who became Facebook's founding president (another brilliant choice, as Timberlake has proven time and time again to have the chops); and Andrew Garfield (Boy A, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) will play Eduardo Saverin …

Confirmed: Eisenberg, Timberlake and Garfield Cast in David Fincher’s The Social Network

22 September 2009 10:18 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Variety has confirmed a casting rumor report from last month for David Fincher big screen adaptation of The Social Network. Jesse Eisenberg has signed to play Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (how perfect is that casting?), Andrew Garfield is set to play Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, and Justin Timberlake will play internet entrepreneur Sean Parker (Napster). Production will begin next month in Boston and later move to Los Angeles. As I have said previously, this is shaping up to be a very solid cast. If you kn ow anything about these characters, I think you'd agree. I don't normally like Timberlake, but anyone who knows the story for the film or has read the book will know he's the perfect person to play Parker. Garfield broke onto the scene with a Award-winning performance in Boy A, and has since appeared in Lions for Lambs, The Other Boleyn Girl, Red Riding, and …

Updates: Top 50 Hottest Young Actors - Moving up the rankings!

Time flies when you're having fun! I'm surprised that we're now doing the 4th update of the Top 50 Hottest Young Actors list! This time, I'm pretty sure the debates will be hotter, more 'personal' as fans defend their favorite actors and argue why "Robert Ulliel" (Who's that?) should be on top and not "Gaspard Pattinson" or "Joseph Gordon-Gosling".

- - -

- - - The Hitlist History, so far... During the first Top 50 Hitlist, it was Ryan Gosling who took the top spot. With his mesmerizing performance in Half Nelson and an Oscar nom for Best Actor for the same movie, he led a pack of awesome talents including James McAvoy, Jake Gyllenhaal and Gaspard Ulliel among others. The 2nd time we did the hitlist, the movie world was swept away by the Twilight fever, and before anyone recognized how 'hot' he was, Robert Pattinson was already at the top of our list. …

Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake to Star in David Fincher’s Facebook Movie?

4 September 2009 4:17 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Ever since it was announced [1] a few months back that David Fincher would be directing The Social Network, the much maligned biopic about the making of Facebook, my interest in the project has been steadily growing. Add to this the fact that the script, which was written by Aaron Sorkin (Charlie Wilson's War, The West Wing), has been getting rave reviews from insiders around the web, and it's looking like this could actually be something much more than a mere attempt to cash in on a brand name. The next step, of course, is the casting, and this week there is some pretty intriguing news to report on that front. I should stress that these are just rumours, although the source seems relatively reliable. According to Carson Reeves (aka ScriptShadow [2], one of the first people to get a hold of The Social Network script), there are three actors that are …
