Last week casting news starting coming in on the upcoming project Devil, which is being helmed by John Dowdle (Quarantine). And now we have some details on just who is going to be bringing the Devil to life.
The special effects for Devil are being created by Robert Hall and Almost Human Studios. Hall, who wrote and directed (and created some pretty badass kills for) recent Grimmy-winner Laid to Rest, previously worked with Dowdle on Quarantine.
Almost Human recently created effects for the upcoming flick The Crazies, as well as for The Burrowers and the FEARNet web series (which Hall also helmed) "Fear Clinic."
"I am thrilled to get to work with the Dowdles again after collaborating with them on Quarantine," said Hall. "Even though I can't really discuss the plot details for Devil, what I can say is that this is one of the best scripts I have read in a while, »

Director M. Night Shyamalan has formed a new production banner called The Night Chronicles. The company will be a vehicle for The Sixth Sense director to formulate ideas and generate stores while appointing directors and the writing staff. He is expected to remain executive producer on all projects and will not direct any features himself.
The first product from The Night Chronicles label will be Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night scribe Brian Nelson’s Devil. The project will be directed by John and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine) and will begin lensing later this month in Toronto.
According to /Film, Devil revolves around a group of people stuck in an elevator in an office building. The group is made up of blue-collar workers and one of them is The Devil.
The horror/thriller will star Chris Messina ( Julia & Julia), Bojana Novakovic (Drag Me to Hell), Bokeem Woodbine (Dead Presidents), Geoffrey Arend »

According to Variety, actor Chris Messina of Julie And Julia has signed on to star in Devil, a script based on an M. Night Shyamalan story. Devil has some heavy duty genre cred, as it's to be co-directed by Quarantine's Drew Dowdle and his brother, John Eric, from a script by Brian Nelson, who penned 30 Days Of Night. It will be the first in a three-film deal under the banner Night Chronicles.
If you wonder how Messina will stand up to Satan himself, remember that he battled a bitchy wife who was obsessed with a cookbook in Julie And Julia. And Hell hath no fury like a Julie scorned.

We reported just last night that Chris Messina will topline Devil, a new fright feature that teams M. Night Shyamalan with the Quarantine team of John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle, and now The Hollywood Reporter has revealed a whole bunch more names in the cast. Shooting is scheduled to begin on the film October 26 in Toronto.
The ensemble also includes Logan Marshall-Green (pictured), Jenny O’Hara, Jacob Vargas from Death Race and The Hills Have Eyes II, Matt Craven, Bojana Novakovic, Bokeem Woodbine, Geoffrey Arend and Caroline Dhavernas, star of TV’s late, lamented Wonderfalls. Plot details have yet to be divulged on Devil, which the Dowdles are directing from a script by 30 Days Of Night’s Brian Nelson, based on a story by Shyamalan, who’s producing with Sam Mercer. John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle, the directorial tandem who adapted the Spanish horror film [Rec] into the American remake Quarantine, are getting back into the horror game. This time they're working on a project called Devil, based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan, who is producing the flick, is keeping all of the plot details under lock and key as the production gets set to roll camera in Toronto on October 26th. However, with the report from Variety today that Chris Messina (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) has been tapped to star comes the revelation that he will play a sobered-up homicide detective. So glean what you will from that little bit of information. Adding to the horror players rally is screenwriter Brian Nelson, who worked with Steve Niles and Stuart Beattie on the adaptation of 30 Days of Night. He was brought in to write the screenplay. As always, we'll let you know when more info is »

Wait, are there killer trees in this movie? Because I don’t know if I can take another killer tree movie from M. Night Shyamalan. Thankfully, no. The film in question is “Devil”, set to be directed by the brothers Dowdle — that’s Drew and John Erick Dowdle, directors of “Quarantine”, the remake of the Spanish horror movie “Rec”. “Devil” is based on a story idea by M. Night Shylaman, but is scripted by Brian Nelson, who is no stranger to horror, having written the film adaptation of “30 Days of Night”. Today the trades report that “Devil” has found its leading man in Chris Messina (pictured, left), who will be playing a character named Bowden, described as “a sobered-up homicide detective”. Messina has been in “Julie and Julia” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, so this is a pretty major departure for him in terms of film roles. Shyamalan and Sam Mercer will produce for Universal, »

[Update: We've now have a synopsis about the plot of Devil]
M. Night Shyamalan is one of those divisive directors in Hollywood - not because of politically controversial film topics like say Michael Moore, or over-the-top art house edge like Lars von Trier. He doesn’t even make it into the mainstream news media spouting off-hand remarks, or getting picked up while driving drunk, flinging anti-Semitic racial slurs. No, Shyamalan divides audiences into those that love his work and those that don’t because of his story telling; there’s no real fence-riding when it comes to his films.
Shyamalan’s next story, Devil, a horror-thriller, is being backed by Universal and directed by brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine) with actor Chris Messina (Julie and Julia) attached to star. Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night) wrote the script based on Shyamalan’s story, the details of which are being kept a tightly guarded secret. I’m not really sure »

Couple of quick casting notes for you today. First up, Working Title yesterday paid a lot of money for a pitch from Allan Loeb to write an as-yet untitled comedy for Ryan Reynolds. The film is a "dude-in-drag romantic comedy, with Reynolds playing a jilted lover who must disguise himself as a woman and befriend his ex in order to win her back." Had to happen sooner or later, really. All manly actors have to prove their mettle not by blowing away a bunch of other manly actors, but by wearing a dress. But if Wesley Snipes can do it, and Terence Stamp can do it, then why not Ryan Reynolds? Watch this one as a double-feature with Buried to see just how much range Reynolds has got. [Variety] After the break, new casting for Devil, the film M. Night Shyamalan wrote for Quarantine writers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle »

Chris Messina, recently seen in Away We Go and Julie & Julia, has been signed to star in Devil, based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan (cue warning bells) and directed by Quarantine co-helmers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle.
I’m endlessly surprised by how quickly a film can go into production after a casting decision is made: filming for Devil will start ten days from now, in Toronto, Canada. The film is a product of Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital’s “Night Chronicles,” which will produce one horror-suspense genre film a year. I don’t know if this means they’ll all be from the mind of Shyamalan, but I doubt it.
Brian Nelson, the writer of 30 Days of Night, wrote the script, which is being kept under tight wraps — likely because there’s some sort of twist involved!
We’ll see if Shyamalan’s production deal pans »

Variety reports that Chris Messina is set to star in Devil , the new horror/thriller based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan that will be directed by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle. The Dowdle brothers adapted the Spanish cult classic [Rec] last year into Quarantine and were also responsible for the (as yet to be released) Poughkeepsie Tapes . This marks the first (of three) films that Shyamalan and Media Rights Capital are creating for Night Chronicles, the banner that will hatch one genre film per year for the next three years. The production begins in Toronto on October 26 for Universal Pictures from a script by Brian Nelson (Co-writer on 30 Days Of Night ). More when we hear it! »

Everyone is excited about seeing a potential career revival for M. Night Shyamalan with The Last Airbender partially because it's not his original screenplay, given him a chance to get away from the twists that at first made him cool, but late made him feel like a one-trick pony. But beware-- Shyamalan is not finished tinkering with the written word, and Chris Messina may be the next person to learn that the hard way. He's set to star in Universal's Devil, a horror thriller that Brian Nelson wrote based on Shyamalan's story. In a big departure from his recent nice-guy roles in Julie & Julia and Away We Go, he's playing a homicide detective recently off the sauce. Variety reports that filming starts in Toronto on the 26th, with Quarantine directors John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle directing. I never really wanted to give up on Shyamalan in the first place, »

This is the first I've heard of "The Night Chronicles," which are a series of three movies to be released over the next three years based on stories by, you guessed it, M. Night Shyamalan. The first of these is Devil, with the story by Shyamalan, the screenplay by 30 Days Of Night’s Brian Nelson and behind the camera, the brothers who directed Quarantine, Drew and John Erick Dowdle. The new news here is that Away We Go and Vicky Christy Barcelona's Chris Messina will star... »

Finally Chris Messina gets cast in a lead role! Unfortunately it's for a horror movie and I'm not sure it'll end up being that big. Messina is set to star in Devil, a horror-thriller based on an M. Night Shyamalan story that's being directed by John Erick and Drew Dowdle of The Poughkeepsie Tapes and Quarantine. Devil is the first film in the Night Chronicles series, a trio of thrillers in which Shyamalan will create the premise then pass the idea off to other filmmakers to be developed into a feature. The script was written by Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night writer Brian Nelson. Production begins in Toronto later this month. The plot of Devil is being kept under wraps by Universal at the moment, but word is that Messina will play Bowden, a "sobered-up homicide detective." Not much to go off of. We last wrote about the project »
