Gun With Occasional Music Getting Adapted

14 hours ago | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Gabe and Alan Polsky have garnered the rights to adapt author Jonathan Lethem’s 1994 cult noir novel “Gun, With Occasional Music” for the big screen. The two recently produced “The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans”. The sci-fi oriented “Gun” follows a private eye through a futuristic Oakland and San Francisco as he investigates a murder involving drugs, mutants called “baby-heads”, and hyperevolved animals that live side-by-side with humans. The book has been garnering interest for a film adaptation since it’s release over a decade ago. No other information about the project has been released yet. Stay tuned to Shockya.com for more on “Gun, With Occasional Music”. By Costa Koutsoutis (Source: [...] »

Lethem's brilliant scifi noir novel Gun, With Occasional Music optioned

20 hours ago | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

For those not framiliar with writer Jonathan Lethem, I'd highly recommend checking out his body of work. I discovered him with The Wall of the Sky, The Wall of the Eye, a collection of short stories which included The Happy Man which was about a man allowed to return from death for short periods of time to provide for his family, and have continued on with As She Climbed Across the table which is about a girl in love with a black hole. But probably finest of all of his works is the Excellent sci-fi noir Gun, With Occasional Music which involves the usual femme fatale and a murder along with the non-standard highly intelligent "baby-heads" and enhanced kangaroos.

Many have wanted to turn Lethem's cult novel into a film over years past, and while news just dropped that Gabe and Alan Polsky, the producers behind Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans »

Bad Lieutenant Producers Set To Tackle Gun, With Occasional Music

4 December 2009 9:34 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Even for a movie with such a great deal of drug abuse, there is a lot of crazy stuff that goes on in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans - break-dancing souls, imaginary lizards, and dream sequences that turn out to be real. As a movie set in the here-and-now, it takes quite a few liberties with "reality," so one must wonder how it would have been treated if sent into the distant future. Now it looks like we won't have to wonder much longer. Gabe and Alan Polsky, the producers of the Herzog film, have optioned Gun, With Occasional Music, a "sci-fi noir" based on the novel by Jonathan Lethem, according to THR. Based in the style of pulp writers like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, the story revolves around a private investigator based in the Bay Area who is hired by a man who claims that he »

Gabe and Alan Polsky, who recently produced "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans," have optioned the film rights to Lethem's cult novel. The sci-fi noir hybrid, originally published by Harcourt Brace in 1994, has drawn interest from film players for more than a decade.

Bad Lieutenant Duo Picking Up 'Gun, With Occasional Music'

4 December 2009 12:01 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans starring Nicholas Cage caught Alex by surprise when he saw it at Telluride, and now the film's producers are riding some good buzz to their next project as THR reports that brothers Gabe and Alan Polsky have optioned Jonathan Lethem's novel Gun, With Occasional Music, which follows an archetypal private eye as he delves into the murder of a prominent urologist. Interesting elements include super-smart children called "baby-heads," evolved animals, erotic nerve swapping, debit cards holding one's karma and a kangaroo that works for the mob. Wait, what the? Apparently the novel has drawn interest from filmmakers for over a decade so don't get your hopes up just yet. But I'm hoping this one gets off the ground. While I haven't read the book, judging by the cool elements Lethem has introduced in what sounds like an interesting universe, »

Nic Cage Says 'Green Hornet' Exit Was 'A Disagreement About The Role, Not The Movie'

3 December 2009 11:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

This past summer cinephiles, comic-book-geeks and Nic Cage fans alike were excited to hear the news that the Oscar winner was set to play a mobster in Seth Rogen’s movie version of “The Green Hornet.” It was an announcement that seemed to promise a return to the edgier, quirkier, over-the-top Cage that endeared himself to fans during the first decade of his career before movies like “The Family Man” and “National Treasure” came along. Oddly enough, that return to form would instead be marked by a different film — and Cage couldn’t be happier.

“It’s not more fun, but it’s kind of relieving,” Cage told MTV News of playing an over-the-top character in “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” which has given the actor his best reviews in years and might just get some awards-season talk. “It’s relieving to get it out; you go through »

Mariah Carey's 'Precious' Leads 2010 Spirit Awards Nominations

1 December 2009 8:36 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

"Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" has come out as one of the nominations leaders at 2010 Independent Spirit Awards. The drama film, which sees Mariah Carey as a social worker, was on Tuesday, December 1 announced to be collecting five nods from the awards honoring independent filmmakers, and thus shared similar number with another drama "The Last Station".

The movie about an abused teen mother nabbed nominations for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Female Lead, Best First Screenplay and Best Supporting Female. It will battle against "Last Station" in the first three categories. For the Best Feature title, it is also up against "500 Days of Summer" "Amreeka" and "Sin Nombre".

"Precious" fails to bring recognition to Carey, but it does land two of its other major cast Gabourey Sidibe and Mo'Nique. Sidibe is listed against Maria Bello, Nisreen Faour, Gwyneth Paltrow and Helen Mirren for Best Female Lead, while »

(95) Days of Spirit

1 December 2009 4:10 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Spirit Awards are coming! In 95 days. The nominees have a long time to decide which pair of jeans or casual designer wear would best suit the event. Though the Spirits have traditionally passed out their ever-so-slightly off mainstream prizes the day before the Oscars this year they’re moving to a Friday night situation on March 5th. All the better for partying? Still time to use those hangover cures before the Oscars on Sunday.

Sin Nombre, a 3 time nomineeHere are the nominees

Best Feature(500) Days Of Summer | Amreeka |Precious | Sin Nombre | The Last StationI warned y'all that The Last Station would have more awards strength than many pundits are indicating. I must get around to Sin Nombre before the end of this year. I suspect Precious is your winner since the Spirits generally award the actual Oscar hopefuls.

2010 Independent Spirit Award Nominees Announced

1 December 2009 3:00 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Although the nominees for the Academy Awards won't be announced until sometime next year, a few of the other award ceremonies are already in full swing including the Independent Spirit Awards, which recognize the best films shot for $20 million or less. This year's Spirit Award nominees were announced earlier today, and I think there are definitely some interesting choices. First off, the big one that everyone is picking up on is the fact that Paranormal Activity was nominated for Best First Feature. And why shouldn't it be? The Blair Witch Project won the exact same award back in 2000. Anvil! The Story of Anvil has been redeemed somewhat for the Oscar snub by getting a nod here for Best Documentary, and surprisingly, Jemaine Clement picked up a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Gentlemen Broncos. Other than that, some of the movies that scored multiple nominations include Precious, (500) Days of Summer, »

Best Of 2009: Overheard at the Gothams

1 December 2009 2:38 PM, PST | GreenCine Daily | See recent GreenCine Daily news »

Not half an hour after The Hurt Locker won the Best Feature prize at last night's Gotham Independent Film Awards, hordes of awardgoers trekked from Cipriani Wall Street to the Kodak/indieWIRE afterparty at the Tribeca Cinemas. Free liquor still being one of life's great social lubricants, even those who headed to the party empty-handed were in pleasant spirits when I asked about their favorite films of 2009—Gothams-related or otherwise:

"Fantastic Mr. Fox was hand-made and the kind of care that goes in with that feels intimate. It's impossible to fake. Wes Anderson always has that ability to bring you into a world that you think you know but don't, and allows you an invitation. I haven't had more fun in the movies in a while."

2009 Spirit Award Nominees

1 December 2009 10:47 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Film Independent’s Spirit Awards are meant to honor “indie” films, i.e. no blockbuster movies allowed but if you played at some festivals and didn’t cost a lot of money, you’re in consideration.  The Spirit Awards are a good indicator of what smaller films could be getting a shot at Oscar nominations in various categories.  Usually, their nominees are pretty solid and play like a nice alternative universe where the Oscars went to more deserving nominees (last year The Wrestler won Best Film and Best Actor).

But this year’s choices are obvious mixed with disappointingly bizarre.  In a year where some strong, hard-sell films came out of Sundance with strong buzz, the Spirit Awards have instead shown love to movies like Two Lovers, Cold Souls, and (500) Days of Summer.  It’s not that any of these films are resoundingly bad, but when placed alongside obvious contenders »

'Last Station' and 'Precious' Lead the 2010 Independent Spirit Award Nominees

This morning, Film Independent, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, announced the nominees for the 25th Film Independent Spirit Awards. The leading nomination getters where Sony Pictures Classics' The Last Station and Lionsgate's Precious, both of which earned five nominations including Best Feature along with Amreeka, 500 Days of Summer and Sin Nombre. Precious also enjoyed nominations in Best Director (Lee Daniels), Best Actress (Gabourey Sidibe), Best Supporting Actress (Mo'Nique) and Best First Screenplay.

The leading studios where Fox Searchlight and Sony Classics, each of which took home 7 nominations, Searchlight even earning one for the critically loathed Gentlemen Broncos with Jemaine Clement earning a Best Supporting Male nod.

I'm very happy to see Christian McKay for Me and Orson Welles enjoying some love and hope it can translate to an Oscar nomination and I wonder if Samantha Morton's nomination for »

'National Treasure 3' Still A Go With Nicolas Cage On Board, Despite Recent Developments

30 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Yeah, we all know that the movies are just “Indiana Jones” rip-offs. And they’re preposterous in every way possible, from the kidnapping of the President to secret messages on the Declaration of Independence to the fact that Justin Bartha’s bumbling comic relief somehow hasn’t been killed. But dammit, there’s just something about those “National Treasure” flicks that makes two hours vanish in a non-threatening haze, leaving you with a smile on your face and the vague feeling you’ve been entertained.

Not too long ago, I was at the massive Disney D23 conference when Studio Chairman Dick Cook surprised everyone by bringing Nicolas Cage onstage. The actor said he was on board for a third turn as adventurer Ben Gates. But now that Cook has been fired, Cage has developed some nasty money problems and various stars are expressing concern over Disney’s turnover, who can say what will be? »

Exclusive: Nic Cage Uncertain About 'Ghost Rider 2' Involvement

30 November 2009 7:02 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Nicolas Cage’s 2007 hit “Ghost Rider” may have made $115 million, but two years later it seems to be existing in that same state of Hollywood limbo as barely-blockbusters like “The Sum of All Fears,” “Hairspray,” or “The Italian Job” — sequel rumors pop up, but there’s some doubt whether one would cement a bigger “Bourne”-like box-office increase, or a “Tomb Raider”-esque over-anticipation of demand. And despite reports of movement on David Goyer's "Ghost Rider" sequel script, Cage says he’s the wrong person to ask these days for updates.

“You probably know more about it then I do,” laughed the veteran actor when asked about the project. “What have you read?"

Cage said he hadn’t heard anything about Goyer's sequel — which is set 10 years after the first film — and is afraid to comment on his future with the character these days.

“Yeah, well I don’t »

Must-Sees: Red Cliff, Bad Lieutenant, The Blind Side

All of a sudden, with the Thanksgiving Day weekend, there’s more than enough good movies to see. Must-Sees: Red Cliff: For action fans and cinephiles of every persuasion, don’t miss this one. Bravura, epic, period war movie, brilliantly executed. Woo’s career best. Tomatometer: 86%. Metascore: 74. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans: Werner Herzog and Nic Cage are never boring. Put them together and the combustion is exhilarating. On a Telluride panel, Cage bristled at my description of his performance of a drug-addled cop as “over-the-top.”  “Look around.
