Samson And Delilah Dominates AFI Awards

14 December 2009 12:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Samson And Delilah swept the board at the Australian Film Institute awards on Saturday night, scooping a string of top honours.

The love story landed the ultimate honour, the Best Film nod, as well as trophies for Best Original Screenplay and Best Direction.

The movie's writer/director, Warwick Thornton, accepted the awards, telling the crowd in Melbourne, Australia, "It's hard work, it's b**ody hard work, there is no mucking around. Be careful what you write, you might just have to direct it."

The child stars of the movie, Marissa Gibson and Rowan McNamara, also shared the Young Actor accolade - and Thornton heaped praise on them, adding: "We put Marissa and Rowan into these lights and part of the deal is to look after them, whatever they want to do, until they know what they want to do and they can separate themselves from us."

Anthony Lapaglia won the Best Actor award for his role in Balibo, a drama about the death of an Australian journalist. The movie's co-writers David Williamson and Robert Connolly won the film a further honour, Best Adapted Screenplay.

Despite being honoured for six awards, Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia only won the one, for highest grossing film. It garnered $211 million (£132 million) at the worldwide box office.

Gangster drama Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities took home three awards including Best Television Screenplay, and Rachel Griffiths landed the Best Supporting Actress for her role in Beautiful Kate. »

First photos from The Reef

3 November 2009 10:28 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Fango just spent some time on the set of The Reef, the new film by Andrew Traucki (the Australian filmmaker who co-directed and co-scripted 2007’s exceptional killer-crocodile flick Black Water) and came back with a couple of exclusive pics, which you can see below. Traucki, a longtime surfer who couldn’t stay away from the water if he tried, is once again investigating the theme of large predatory animal interactions with humans, but is wading into much deeper here.

And if you’d like to share the experiences of the cast and crew of The Reef (which we first reported on here), you can join them live when they stream on-line in real time from the location in Hervey Bay, Queensland this Wednesday, November 4 if you’re U.S./UK-based and Thursday, Nov. 5 for Australians. Check out the film’s official website to sign up, and also read a production blog and other info. »

Five More to Stay at Whedon's Cabin in the Woods

10 March 2009 8:10 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

A while back we covered a little bit of rumor mill fodder regarding the forthcoming genre-subverting, Joss Whedon-written, Drew Goddard-directed horror film Cabin in the Woods. Well, THR is reporting some official casting decisions five times over. Joining the previously announced duo of Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford are actors Kristen Connolly (Revolutionary Road), Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek), Anna Hutchison ("Underbelly"), Fran Kranz ("Dollhouse"), and Jesse Williams ("Beyond the Break"). As for the characters that this gaggle will be playing, that's being strictly withheld by the filmmakers. Though the official plot synopsis is also being kept under wraps, from this casting it's easy to see that the usual horror casting of attractive twenty-somethings is in full force (see photos above for reference). The mysterious organization behind this scheme is doing this in order to hold a sweepstakes on just how everything will pan out. "Finding »
